Chapter 1: The Obsidian Awakening

1.1k words

Dust motes danced in the sparse sunlight filtering through the narrow window of Anthony's room. He sat hunched, a tattered book clutched in his hands, but his gaze drifted past the worn pages, out towards the bustling village square. Today was Awakening Day, a celebration for most, a looming dread for him. Loneliness was a constant companion, a chill that had settled deep in his bones since his uncle’s coughing fits had finally silenced. Before that, it had been his parents, a hazy memory of absence that had defined his earliest years. He was an anomaly, a quiet shadow in a village brimming with vibrant, laughing families. Children pointed sometimes. Whispers followed him like persistent flies. “The orphan.” “The one whose uncle… vanished.” No one said ‘died’ anymore, not after the strange illness had claimed so many. His uncle, kind and gentle, had succumbed to it, leaving Anthony truly alone. Now, at sixteen, the weight of his solitude felt heavier than ever. The Awakening was supposed to bring him purpose, a path. Everyone else had their destiny laid out, a color signifying their magical affinity. Fire, water, earth, air – the orthodox elements. Anthony felt no such pull. He closed the book, its ancient wisdom offering no comfort. A dull ache throbbed behind his eyes. He had studied, he had meditated, he had tried to feel the energy, but his core remained a silent, empty space. Perhaps he would awaken nothing. That was a fear almost as great as awakening something forbidden. To be truly without power in the Land of Origin was to be a ghost, a non-entity. A sharp knock rattled his door. “Anthony! Elder Kai awaits! The ceremony begins.” It was Elara, her voice bright with unburdened anticipation. She was the same age, her core already buzzing with a faint, hopeful warmth. He stood, his limbs feeling heavy, each step a reluctant march. His simple tunic, the best he owned, felt itchy against his skin. The village square was a sea of faces, all turned towards the central dais, where Elder Kai stood, serene and ancient. Elder Kai’s silver hair gleamed under the midday sun. His robes, woven with symbols of the orthodox elements, flowed around him. He was the most revered practitioner in the district, his wisdom undeniable, his power vast. Anthony swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. The air thrummed with raw magical energy, drawn from the earth and sky, focused for the ceremony. Each young person approached the dais, their hearts pounding, their futures hanging in the balance. One by one, they stepped forward. A flash of fiery red for young Kael. A calming blue for Lyra. A solid green for Borin. Each time, Elder Kai’s face softened with approval, his hand resting gently on their head, blessing their path. Anthony watched, a tightening in his chest. His turn came. A hush fell over the crowd. He felt their eyes on him, a mixture of curiosity and subtle pity. They knew his history. They knew his quietude. They wondered what path, if any, awaited the abandoned boy. Slowly, he ascended the three stone steps. Elder Kai’s eyes, usually warm and knowing, held a flicker of something unreadable as Anthony met his gaze. No, not unreadable. It was assessment, a probe into the quiet depths of his soul. Anthony stood before the Elder, his palms damp. The dais was cold beneath his bare feet. The air here was thick with concentrated power, a tangible force that pressed against his skin. He closed his eyes, trying to focus, trying to feel… anything. Elder Kai raised his ritual blade. It wasn't a weapon, but a conduit, crafted from pure mana-infused crystal, designed to gently stimulate the dormant core. It shimmered with an inner light, a pure, white glow that promised clarity and connection. It descended. Not with force, but with a deliberate, precise grace. The tip of the blade hovered millimeters above Anthony’s sternum, right over the center of his chest, where his core resided. An electric jolt, not painful, but utterly alien, shot through him. It was cold, colder than anything he had ever known. The pure white light of the blade, meant to ignite his inner magic, wavered. Inside him, deep within the void he had always known, something stirred. It wasn’t a spark of light. It was an absence, a hungry shadow. An obsidian glow pulsed, not outwards, but inwards, a profound, consuming darkness that drank the light. The pure energy flowing from Elder Kai’s blade, from the very ceremony itself, didn't awaken Anthony; it was absorbed. It vanished into the swirling void within him, leaving no trace, no residue, only a chilling sense of profound solitude. He felt an emptiness expand, an almost terrifying awareness of the power now residing within him – a power that consumed, rather than created. His eyes snapped open. The light from Kai’s blade was gone, swallowed. The Elder’s face, usually serene and composed, contorted. His eyes, wide with disbelief, stared not at Anthony, but *through* him, at some unseen horror. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. A guttural gasp escaped him, his body stiffening. Anthony felt a sickening lurch in his stomach. The horror in Elder Kai’s eyes confirmed his greatest fear: he was truly alone. And now, he was something else. A monster. The very air around them seemed to thicken, growing heavy, oppressive. His heart hammered against his ribs. A strange chill spread from his chest, colder than ice, yet not unwelcome. It was a new feeling, a sense of raw, untamed potential. He could feel the absorbed energy, swirling within him, restless. Other Elders, seated on lower platforms, stirred. Their eyes narrowed, sensing the sudden, unnatural silence, the abrupt disruption of the ceremony’s flow. They felt the absence of the expected magical signature, the void where a vibrant new path should have been. Elder Kai, frozen in place, began to tremble. His hand, still clutching the now inert ritual blade, shook uncontrollably. His gaze remained fixed on Anthony’s chest, a silent scream etched across his features. Anthony felt a subtle shift within his core, a distinct pull. It wasn't him. Not consciously, not intentionally. Something else was responding to the Elder’s terror, to the raw fear now radiating from the man. A spectral hand, shimmering with an unholy light, emerged from Anthony's chest, not his own, reaching with almost playful malice for the petrified Elder Kai, threatening to reveal the true depth of his monstrous awakening to all assembled.
