Chapter 9 of 10
Two Hearts as One

The colossal limb, thicker than any mountain peak Liaza had ever imagined, smashed through the quartz walls, leaving shimmering dust and drifting sparks in its wake. The very air shrieked, a sound of tearing reality. A blast of frigid, necrotic air slammed into them, reeking of void and ancient decay. Liaza stumbled back, Davit catching her, his arm a steel band around her waist. The Spire groaned, its chamber vibrating under the assault.
Then, from the breach, the entity's core surged forward: a churning gyre of screaming, shadowed faces. Their silent cries clawed at Liaza’s sanity, each face a flicker of a life consumed, a world unmade. It pulsed with a sickening, gravitational pull, drawing light and sound into its depths. The chamber, once filled with the Spire’s gentle hum, became a cold vacuum where only the Mts'q'emsebi’s terrible presence existed. It was bearing down on them, a cosmic predator zeroing in on its prey.
“It’s here,” Liaza whispered. She caught Davit's arm, her fingers sinking into his coat. “We have to do this, now.”
Davit nodded, bracing his stance. “The circle. Can you begin?”
Before Liaza could reply, the ground beneath them lurched again. Not from the Mts'q'emsebi, but from the distinct thrum of propulsion engines. Through the ragged hole in the Spire, several sleek, silver vessels streaked into view, their crests unmistakable. The Ch’rdili Conclave. Their arrival came with a volley of searing plasma beams that hissed past the limb and sliced straight toward the exposed chamber.
“They’re here for *us*,” Liaza said, cold fear sinking into her ribs. “They’ll attack both.”
“As expected,” Davit grunted, pulling her toward the patterned floor. He stepped forward, drawing his ceremonial blade – not for attack, but to deflect. “Go. Focus. I’ll buy us time.”
One brilliant blue bolt veered straight toward Liaza. Davit lunged, deflecting it with his steel. The impact sent a crack snaking across the stone tiles, shoving him back a pace. He was a lightning rod, drawing their attention, deflecting their wrath. *This was it.* Liaza closed her eyes, forcing herself to trust, to begin.
She placed her palms on the cool surface of the central pillar. The runes etched around its base flared with soft green light. The air grew dense and dry.
The rite demanded absolute trust, an opening of the self that felt bare and exposed. Liaza had to let go of her deepest fears – of her power consuming her, of the Mts'q'emsebi, of losing Davit, of a life without peace. She had to project her hopes – for a simple home, for quiet days, for a future shared. A steady warmth bloomed behind her ribs, spreading into her fingers. It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once. She imagined threads of pure, vibrant light extending from her, seeking Davit, inviting him in.
At the circle's edge, Davit grunted as another beam glanced off his pauldron. He shielded his eyes from the momentary flash, but his gaze remained fixed on Liaza. He saw her, truly saw her, not just the Guli Kamara, but the scared girl, the fierce protector, the kind soul. He felt the threads, warm and inviting, seeking him out. He lowered his guard, letting go of the carefully constructed walls of ambition and self-reproach he’d built over a lifetime. He yielded, letting his own hopes and fears reach her across the bond—the dread of inadequacy, the hope for a path beyond his bloodline's demands, the longing to stand beside her in peace. Their minds and emotions intertwined, a beautiful, delicate dance of two souls becoming one, a resonance that echoed the Spire’s true purpose.
The Mts'q'emsebi’s dark center churned. A dense spear of black miasma gathered, aimed directly at Liaza. It was meant to rip her from the ritual, to claim her as its own. Davit cried out, unable to move, too far from her, too occupied with the Conclave’s relentless assault.
But before the black energy could strike, a smaller, older skyship, bearing the familiar but now almost forgotten crest of the Weavers of Jheva, shot into the line of fire. It was Keto’s ship. The elder, her face grim but resolute at the helm, met Liaza’s eyes for a fleeting second. Keto's gaze held hers across the distance, steady and sorrowful.
Keto didn't try to evade. She steered directly into the path of the Mts'q'emsebi’s blast, intercepting it with the full mass of her vessel. The impact was catastrophic. The skyship erupted in a blinding flash that drowned out the Conclave skyships. Superheated wreckage ripped through the grasping limb, forcing it back with an ear-splitting shriek.
The exploding core of Keto’s ship bought them precious, final seconds. The force of the blast slammed into the Spire, rattling it to its foundation, but also momentarily disrupting the Mts'q'emsebi’s attack. Liaza pressed both palms flat against the pillar, tears scalding her cheeks as she poured every grain of her will into the severing. Their intertwined emotions surged, a powerful current of shared purpose. The stone plinth flared, casting long shadows across the walls.
Outside, the entity lashed out at the Conclave gunboats. Inside, the rite reached its crest. A ring of silver light rippled outward from the plinth, passing through Liaza and Davit without burning. The air crackled, then stilled. The bond snapped clean. An anchor dropped away from Liaza's marrow, leaving her gasping in sudden lightness. She met Davit's gaze; beneath the soot and sweat on his brow, his expression softened with fierce relief.
But the silence that followed was not one of peace. It was the calm before a different storm, a deeper dread. The creature's blackened limb thrashed against the floorstones, and deep within the howling abyss, something new stirred. Something immense, something primal, something that looked impossibly like a colossal, unfolding eye.
