Chapter 5 of 10
The Heiress Wears a Veil
1.1k words
The tiered reception suite of the Vermilion Spire gleamed under the violet hue of a thousand bio-engineered orchids. The air, usually thick with the scent of jasmine and old money, now carried an unsettling undercurrent of strained smiles and forced conviviality. Oraya, hidden behind a cascade of iridescent glass beads forming her ceremonial veil, wished she were anywhere else. Her hands, clammy despite the estate’s perfect climate control, clenched under the heavy fabric of her sapphire gown. She could feel every single eye in the room, even through the shimmering barrier. They stared past the fabric at the lineage itself, calculating the weight of the treasury, and the scrutiny made the back of her neck burn.
Her family’s elders, a collection of ancient, bejeweled figures, reclined on elevated divans, their porcelain tea cups clinking softly. Dr. Niran, ever the attentive host, moved among them with a silver carafe, pouring fragrant herbal infusions. His smile was a soothing balm, his words a comforting murmur. Oraya watched him, a knot of unease tightening in her stomach. He was too smooth, too kind. And she had seen the tiny, almost invisible vial he’d palmed before refilling the carafe. Her surgeon's memory cataloged the motion: belladonna extract, concentrated.
Then Kriton Thamrong, resplendent in a borrowed, slightly ill-fitting formal suit, marched towards her dais, radiating the desperate optimism of a man clutching at a last straw. He executed a bow that was more a theatrical dip, his gaze fixed somewhere above her veiled head. “Esteemed Lady,” he began, his voice a booming pronouncement that grated against Oraya’s eardrums, “Kriton Thamrong, CEO of NexusTech Solutions, at your service. It is an honor beyond measure to stand before your dynastic aura.” He paused, clearly expecting a reaction. Oraya remained motionless, her breath shallow. Chatri, standing like an impossibly wide gargoyle behind her throne, subtly nudged her with a thick elbow. “Mmmph,” Oraya mumbled, a tiny, strangled sound.
Chatri leaned in, then projected, “The Lady says, ‘Your enthusiasm is… noted, Thamrong. Speak your piece.’” Kriton preened, taking it as an invitation. “Indeed, indeed! The Grandmaster’s victory tonight, on behalf of NexusTech, has, I trust, impressed upon the esteemed House Vorapat the innovative spirit and sheer grit of my enterprise. We stand ready to forge new alliances, to pioneer the next generation of data-flux integration and… well, everything, really.” He puffed out his chest. “Unlike certain… *domestic distractions* I’ve recently shed. My ex-wife, for instance. A meek, stuttering little thing, entirely useless beyond watering her silly plants. Couldn’t even hold a conversation without dissolving into stammering terror. Good riddance, I say! A true visionary needs no such dead weight.”
Oraya’s fingers locked around the datapad. Heat crawled up her cheeks beneath the veil, purely from the exquisite agony of hearing herself slandered directly to her veiled face. Her ex-husband, prattling on about her perceived inadequacies, while she, Oraya, sat here as the very entity he was begging for help. It was too much. The urge to simply vanish, to collapse into nothingness, was almost unbearable. Yet as the sole inheritor of the house, bolting into the ductwork was out of the question.
She scribbled furiously on a datapad hidden beneath the folds of her gown, pressing the ‘confirm’ button with a thumb that threatened to punch through the screen. Chatri, sensing her rising agitation, cleared his throat. “Our patron has heard your… *eloquent* assessment of your past entanglements, Thamrong,” Chatri boomed. “And she has decided on a course of action. She finds your company’s *potential*… intriguing.” Kriton beamed, a self-satisfied grin spreading across his face. “Ah, I knew it! A woman of true insight!”
Chatri held up the datapad, now displaying a single, stark number. “Therefore, she has chosen to acquire your *entire* enterprise. Effective immediately. For the sum of one hundred billion credits.”
Kriton’s jaw hung open. The drone of cocktail chatter died mid-syllable. His face cycled through shock, disbelief, and finally, a dawning horror. “One… one hundred billion?” he croaked, ashen. “But… why? My company isn’t even… who needs…”
Oraya leaned forward, a tiny, almost inaudible whisper escaping her lips. Chatri, without missing a beat, translated with dramatic flourish: “Our patron commands, ‘To ensure you are no longer a *distraction*. Now. Kindly. Depart.’”
Kriton stumbled back, the dream of retaining corporate autonomy dissolving beneath a mountain of hostile buyout capital. He gaped at the veiled figure before retreating, numb and thoroughly bewildered.
As the last echoes of Kriton’s humiliation faded, a cold, metallic clang reverberated through the ballroom. Heavy blast doors slammed shut, sealing off every entrance and exit. The lights flickered, bathing the room in an ominous crimson glow. Dr. Niran, his kindly mask finally slipping, stepped away from the startled elders, a sinister smile twisting his lips. He no longer held the tea carafe, but a sleek, silenced energy pistol.
“My apologies for the theatrics, esteemed guests,” Niran’s voice, amplified by hidden speakers, resonated over the sealed chamber. “But as the designated executor of the clan’s trust, I regret to inform you that the current administration is… inefficient. And the young mistress, frankly, is a security risk.” He chuckled, a chilling sound. “Oh, Oraya. Did you truly think I wouldn’t recognize my prized student, my ‘Phantom Surgeon,’ even behind those ridiculous scrubs? Or my ‘Grandmaster of the Iron-Silk Arts,’ prancing about in a cheap oni mask? Such transparent attempts at anonymity.” He leveled the pistol at Oraya’s veiled head, his eyes glinting with malicious triumph. “And now, the final role: the reclusive mistress. You are a magnificent performer, my dear. But the curtain falls, and your fortune becomes mine.”
Before Oraya could even flinch, a blinding flash erupted from Niran’s pistol. A high-velocity tranquilizer dart, tipped with a potent neurotoxin, whistled through the air directly towards her forehead. Just as it was about to strike, Chatri, with an ear-splitting roar, threw himself in front of Oraya, his massive body intercepting the dart. He grunted, a guttural sound of pain, as the projectile buried itself in his shoulder. His knees buckled, and the boisterous brawler slammed face-first into the marble floor, completely limp. The heavy thud echoed across the tiles, followed by the metallic clicks of drawn sidearms. Oraya stared at Chatri’s motionless form, then at the menacing figure of Dr. Niran, his mercenaries now swarming into the room. The veil felt like a prison. This time, no veil could hide her.
