The Stepsister's Downfall

Myat’s arm, quivering with a desperate fervor, tightened around Master Phung’s neck. The obsidian blade drew a fine, stark line of red across his skin. Zayar moved, a blur of golden silk, but Phung held up a hand, a surprisingly placid smile blooming on his aged face.
“Oh, dear,” Master Phung sighed, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He patted Myat’s arm with a fatherly, almost pitying gesture. “Such a dramatic flair, little viper. But did you truly think I would leave an *actual* weapon where you might find it?”
Myat froze, her furious gaze flicking from Zayar’s grim face to Phung’s infuriating calm. “What… what are you talking about?”
Phung chuckled, a dry, raspy sound that seemed to mock the tension in the room. “That particular knife, my dear, was last used to cut a celebratory cake for the Twin Carp Festival. I had it coated in a rather potent slumber-petal extract this morning, just in case any… overzealous guests attempted to make a spectacle.”
As if on cue, Myat’s eyes glazed over. Her grip on the dagger slackened, her arm going limp around Phung’s neck. A soft, almost comical snore escaped her lips as her knees buckled, sending her sprawling onto the cold stone floor beside the now-inert Heart of Champa-Xan. The obsidian blade clattered harmlessly, a dull thud in the suddenly silent vault.
Lord Viper and Lady Hemlock, who had been watching with a flicker of desperate hope, now looked utterly dejected, their shoulders slumping. Zayar stepped over Myat’s unconscious form, his expression as cold and unyielding as the vault’s bedrock.
“Master Phung,” Zayar stated, his voice ringing against the vault stones, “the documents.”
Phung, now free of Myat’s unwanted embrace, smoothed his robes. From a hidden pocket within his voluminous sleeve, he produced a rolled parchment tied with a dark ribbon. He unfurled it with a flourish, presenting it to Zayar. The parchment was thick, covered in elegant script and sealed with the crests of the Venom Lords.
“As per the ancient customs of the Dominions,” Phung announced, his voice echoing slightly, “when the Heart of the realm is claimed and purified by a new ruler, all previously held titles and lands revert to the one who quelled its fury. An absolute transfer of power, signed and witnessed.”
Zayar took the contract, his gaze sweeping over the trembling Venom Lords. “You will sign this. Every last one of you. Now.” He gestured to a small, ornate writing desk that had been discreetly rolled into the vault by his guards, along with an inkwell and a quill.
Lord Viper, his face pale and clammy, stammered, “But… this is unprecedented! The Heart has never been… pacified before!”
“Indeed,” Zayar replied, a chilling smile playing on his lips. “Which makes its purification by my wife, the Supreme Empress Tuyen, all the more binding. Sign, or face the consequences of treason against your new sovereign.”
The Venom Lords, trapped and utterly defeated, began to sign, their hands shaking as they scrawled their names beneath a sprawling section titled “Absolute Cession of all Titles, Estates, and Mercantile Holdings to the House of Tuyen.”
Zayar finally presented the signed agreement to Tuyen, who was still seated on the purified Heart of the Dominions, blinking slowly, as if just waking from a particularly profound nap. The once-glowing crystal was now a smooth, dark stone, emitting a faint, almost imperceptible warmth.
“My sovereign,” Zayar began, his voice softening, “the entirety of Champa-Xan, its lands, its fleets, its wealth, its people… are now yours.”
Tuyen took the scroll, her fingers tracing the elaborate script. Her brow furrowed, a rare expression of something other than sleepy contentment crossing her face. She scanned the fine print at the bottom, her eyes moving faster than Zayar had ever seen them.
“‘Daily administrative meetings’?” she mumbled, her voice surprisingly sharp. “‘Mandatory audits of all regional treasuries’?” She looked up at Zayar, her placid demeanor replaced by a sudden, intense irritation. “And what, pray tell, are ‘quarterly delegate assemblies regarding provincial infrastructure’?”
Zayar’s smile faltered. “Ah, those are merely… formalities, my love. Part of the, ah, ruling process.”
Tuyen tossed the scroll onto the stone beside her, a look of profound disgust on her face. “Formality? This sounds like a lifetime of being bothered. Of people wanting things. Of *talking*.” She fixed Zayar with a stare that promised extreme inconvenience. “Listen, Zayar. I married you for quiet, for comfortable bedding, and for a place where I wouldn’t be bothered. If this ‘Supreme Empress’ nonsense means I have to attend even *one* of these insufferable meetings, then you can consider this an immediate divorce. I’ll pack my Silk-spider blanket and find a different, less politically active, rock to sleep on.”
Zayar froze, genuine panic draining the color from his face. “No! Never! My dearest Tuyen, please reconsider! I’ll handle them! All of them! Every single meeting, every audit, every assembly! Consider me your Royal Proxy, your administrative shield, your most loyal secretary! Your name will grace the documents, your will shall be done, but your precious, undisturbed rest shall remain paramount!”
Tuyen eyed him skeptically. “Every single one? Even the ones about, ‘inter-district irrigation disputes’?”
“Especially those!” Zayar vowed, kneeling before her, his eyes shining with desperate sincerity. “I shall drown in the minutiae so you may float in tranquility!”
A small, satisfied smile touched Tuyen’s lips. “Very well. But if I hear even a whisper of a budget report reaching my ears, consider our marriage null and void.”
“Understood!” Zayar declared, relief washing over him. He was about to rise when a sudden, deep *BOOM* reverberated through the very stones of the Thousand-Step Manor. It was the sound of a massive horn, one unlike any local instrument, echoing from the cliffs above. The sound vibrated down into the vault, rattling the discarded weapons and sending a ripple of unease through the remaining guards.
One of Zayar’s most trusted captains, a burly man named Kian, stumbled into the vault, his face etched with alarm. “Lord Zayar! An Imperial Envoy! From the Jade Throne itself! They demand an audience with the new Supreme Ruler of the Dominions immediately!”
