Chapter 7 of 10

The Blueprint Betrayal

1.2k words

Gravel bit through Cosima’s denim as the roar of idling engines receded behind the ringing in her ears. He *orchestrated* it. He stole her life’s work, weaponized her most painful vulnerability, all to… meet her? Her gaze, sharp as a laser, raked over his face, searching for a tell, a flicker of remorse that wasn't just about his cover being blown. His hand hovered near her cheek before falling back to his side, his posture stiffening as the threadbare thrift-store fiction came apart. *** *Six months earlier. The penthouse level of Stratum Atelier, overlooking the glistening spire of the Zylos Tower.* Lazar Toros leaned back in his ergonomic throne, the holographic display of the architectural exposition’s preliminary submissions hovering before him. His attention, however, was fixed on a single, unremarkable digital portfolio. The name beneath the thumbnail image was Cosima Fentaro. Her submission, 'The Prism Weave', was audacious, impractical, and mathematically vicious. It was a cathedral of light and shadow, woven with a mathematical precision that belied its organic flow. It pulsed with a defiant genius that had been missing from the predictable, polished submissions of his own firm for years. He’d seen thousands of portfolios, dozens of prodigies. But Cosima Fentaro was different. There was a raw bite to her work, an unmistakable ambition that caught him off balance. He found himself drawn to her audacity, her disregard for conventional constraints. His executive assistant, Elian, a man whose placid demeanor hid an encyclopedic knowledge of the global design landscape, cleared his throat. “Sir, the 'Prism Weave' draft. It’s… outside the parameters for this year’s competition. Too experimental. And the author, Ms. Fentaro, is currently unaffiliated.” Lazar dismissed the holographic projection with a wave of his hand, his thoughts already racing. “Find her. Find everything about her.” Elian, ever efficient, returned an hour later with a comprehensive dossier. Cosima Fentaro: twenty-eight, graduate of the Alani Institute, minor awards, and one significant detail—a live-in boyfriend, Miles Crofton, an uninspired draftsman struggling to secure a senior lead position at any firm. Crofton had applied to Stratum Atelier for a mid-level manager role, which had been rejected. Lazar’s lips curved into a slow, predatory smile. Crofton was ambitious, desperate, and just mediocre enough to be easily manipulated. A seed of an idea, dangerous and thrilling, began to sprout. “Elian,” Lazar said, his voice quiet, almost a purr. “Reconsider Mr. Crofton’s application. Offer him the lead position on the Zylos Expansion. Make sure the package includes a substantial relocation bonus, an immediate contract start, and a public announcement of his appointment.” Elian’s brow furrowed, a rare display of confusion. “Sir, the Zylos Expansion is a high-profile, high-stakes endeavor. Mr. Crofton’s experience… it’s not commensurate with such a role.” “It will be,” Lazar corrected, his eyes gleaming with a cold fire. “And ensure that the public announcement specifically references his *visionary* portfolio, perhaps even hinting at a major blueprint he’s bringing to our tables.” He paused, a wicked glint in his gaze. “He’ll take the bait. They always do when their ambition outweighs their integrity.” Elian, accustomed to his boss’s inscrutable methods, simply nodded. “Understood, Mr. Toros.” Lazar looked out at the city, a concrete sprawl unfurling beneath him. He had laid the first stone. Now, he would wait for his architect to walk into his trap. *** *Present. Stratum Annex Site.* Cosima stumbled back, away from his outstretched hand, away from the man she now saw as a gilded cage-builder. Every word rang with sickening clarity. She had mocked Miles for his desperation, for his pathetic attempt to steal her work, but Lazar… Lazar had used him as a pawn. Used *her* as a pawn. “You… you *orchestrated* it?” Her voice was a low, dangerous growl, laced with a venom that shocked even her. “You thought you could just… pull strings? Play God with my life, with my *career*? All so you could… what? Meet your new toy?” Her hands clenched at her sides, nails digging into her palms. “You think you can just buy talent, buy destiny, buy *me*?” His expression shifted, a flicker of wounded pride crossing his face, but he held her gaze. “It wasn’t about buying you, Cosima. It was about seeing you. About having you here, where your genius belongs.” “My genius doesn’t belong in your gilded cage!” she retorted, her voice rising. The site crew and riggers, who had been slowly backing away, froze, watching with undisguised curiosity. “I am not an asset you acquire, Toros. I’m not a building on your balance sheet, and I’m damn sure not some charity case you ‘rescue’ by actively sabotaging my future.” She stalked past him to a nearby metal scaffolding, yanking a roll of blueprint paper from an unused storage tube. Her focus narrowed to razor sharpness. Her pen, a sleek silver one she always kept in her pocket, flew across the crisp, blue-lined paper. She scrawled furiously, ignoring the gaping onlookers, ignoring the man who watched her with a mixture of dread and grim acceptance. “So you wanted to meet me, huh?” she spat, not looking at him, her hand still moving with swift, angry strokes. “Well, congratulations. You met me. And now, you get to meet my lawyers.” She ripped the makeshift document from the roll, the sound a sharp tear in the oppressive silence. She turned, her eyes blazing, and slapped the paper onto his chest. It unfolded, revealing two words, stark and unforgiving: *DIVORCE AGREEMENT*. “Sign it,” she demanded, her voice tight with fury. “And while you’re at it, here are the terms: you leave Miles Crofton alone. His sister needs that salary. You find another way to compensate for your… little ‘experiment.’ You find a way to get her the care she needs, without ruining him. Or me. And you never, *ever* think you can play architect with someone else’s life again.” He didn't move, the blueprint paper clinging to his dark jacket, a stark blue stain against the expensive fabric. His eyes, fixed on hers, held a depth of pain she almost regretted causing, but her rage burned too hot to allow for sympathy. She had been humiliated, used, her trust shattered by the man who had pretended to be her penniless, doting *husband*. “Don’t look at me like that,” she warned, her chin lifting defiantly. “This isn’t about being hurt. This is about being insulted. You thought I was so easily bought, so easily manipulated? Fine. Take your billions. I’ll take half of it just to watch you squirm.” She spun on her heel, her boots crunching on the loose gravel. “And you can tell your Zylos Expansion to build itself.” She marched towards the site exit, leaving Lazar Toros standing amidst the raw steel and concrete, the divorce papers a silent accusation on his chest. As she reached the perimeter fence, her phone buzzed in her hand. It was Romy. Her message flashed across the screen, urgent and horrifying: “Cosima, it’s bad! Miles is deleting everything! He’s locked the archive, I can’t stop him! He’s purging your backup files from the firm server! He knows about the CEO’s review, he’s trying to cover his tracks!”
