Chapter 6 of 10
Capsaicin Grenades and Shattered Cores

Gorok’s grin stretched, revealing teeth stained yellow from processed synth-paste. The detonator unit in his hand pulsed, buzzing against his synthetic leather glove even over the shuffling boots of the now-silent Khargai Zenith guards. Ganzorig stood frozen, his face a mask of disbelief and betrayal, the silence of his defunct wrist-comm screaming louder than any alarm. The energy batons of the Sludge Baron’s brutes flared, casting sickly green light across the vault’s high ceiling, illuminating sacks of hoarded Sylvan-Spices and crates of glistening Umbral-Yams.
Tsetsu’s dizzy smile evaporated. Her eyes, usually wide with feigned ignorance, narrowed to sharp slits. The air crackled with the raw fury she usually kept buried. “Freeze Sector 9?” Her voice, usually soft, was a low growl that cut through Gorok’s self-satisfied chuckle. “You think that little toy is scarier than a pissed-off chef?”
Gorok scoffed. “A chef? You’re a slum rat with a rusty pan. Give me the wok, girl. And those recipes. I’ll make you my personal synth-paste flavorist. It’s better than freezing to death, eh?” He leveled the plastic-cased transmitter, its red indicator ticking like an angry beetle.
“My wok,” Tsetsu gripped the polished iron handle, the metal cool beneath her calloused fingers, “is an extension of my soul. My recipes are etched into the very fiber of this world, not some data chip you can steal.” Her gaze swept over the vault, assessing the towering stacks of illicit ingredients, the narrow ventilation shafts high above. Her mind raced, calculating air currents, combustion points, the perfect chaotic trajectory.

The message seared into her mind, pushing aside all doubt. There was no time for negotiations, no room for surrender. She didn’t look at Ganzorig, didn’t dare meet his eyes, afraid of the vulnerability she might see, the ache she might feel. She had to focus. She had to cook. And sometimes, cooking was war.
With a sudden, violent twist, Tsetsu snatched a sack from a teetering pile next to her, ripping it open with a single, practiced tug. A cascade of vivid scarlet orbs, each no larger than her thumb, spilled onto the cold vault floor. Flash-Chilies. Known for their volatile capsaicinoids, capable of inducing tears in a hardened Outer Steppe raider with just a whiff.
“Chuluun!” she barked, her voice sharp, unlike her usual playful tone. “The air-duct cycle! How fast can it churn?”
Chuluun, who had been trying to shield Ganzorig from the slavering brutes, looked up, his eyes still red-rimmed from the Lava-Onion. His mind, trained in complex chemical reactions, instantly grasped her intent. “Minimum three minutes for full displacement,” he rattled off, his voice tight. “But if we overload the intake, we could saturate the immediate area in thirty seconds!”
“Perfect,” Tsetsu hissed, already scooping the Flash-Chilies into her wok with a speed that blurred her hands. She kicked open a discarded nutrient barrel, its slick, oily residue creating a makeshift fuel. She pulled a small, incendiary device from her belt – a relic from her illegal fire-starting days – and ignited the wok’s contents. The chilies began to sizzle, their skins blistering, releasing a faint, sweet smell that quickly turned acrid.
Gorok laughed again, a harsh, dismissive sound. “You’re going to cook us a snack? Foolish girl!”
Tsetsu ignored him. With a powerful, fluid motion, she spun, using the momentum to hurl the flaming wok and its sizzling contents directly towards the largest, most active ventilation intake vent high above them. The wok became a crimson blur, a missile of spicy doom. It hit the grates with a resounding clang, scattering molten chili pulp and superheated capsaicin vapor into the ventilation system. A violent shudder ran through the ductwork.
Before Gorok could react, a noxious, invisible cloud billowed from every vent in the vault. The sweet, innocent smell was gone, replaced by a searing, chemical burn. The first brute coughed, a wet, choking sound, then fumbled his energy baton, clutching his throat as the rod clattered against the plating. His eyes, seconds ago filled with predatory glee, welled with agonizing tears.
“What… what is this… ARGH!” Gorok shrieked, his voice dissolving into a gurgling gasp as the fumes hit him. He lost his grip on the transmitter, tearing at his eyelids while mucus and tears soaked his lapels. The Elite Sludge Cultivators, who had been advancing with smug confidence, stumbled backward, their faces contorting in grotesque paroxysms of pain. They slammed onto their kneecaps, retching across their synth-leather boot toes, clawing at skin puffed bright red by the fumes. Their dignity, along with their fighting capabilities, dissolved in a haze of pure capsaicin-induced agony.
Tsetsu, meanwhile, moved with the precision of a whirlwind. Her vision, honed by years of surviving toxic dust storms, remained clear. She ripped open sacks of Sylvan-Spices, tossed crates of Umbral-Yams to Chuluun, who, despite his own sputtering coughs, caught them with surprising dexterity. He was already tying a scrap of cloth, a discarded data-sheet from his elite uniform, around his waist like an apron. “I am your sous-chef, Tsetsu,” he wheezed, his eyes streaming but resolute. “What next?”
Ganzorig, gasping for air, stumbled toward the loose transmitter. “The regulator! He might still activate it!” His voice was hoarse with the chili fumes, but his urgency was clear.
Gorok, still writhing on the floor, managed to raise a shaking hand. His blurred gaze fixed on the plastic casing. Tsetsu kicked the module across the floor plates, skittering it out of reach.
“Get out!” Tsetsu shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos. “Take what you can!” She grabbed Ganzorig’s arm, pulling him towards the vault door that Chuluun was already prying open with a discarded biotech tool. The brutes were a pile of weeping, retching bodies, completely neutralized. The vault was hers.
As they scrambled through the opening, the sound of a heavy, metallic clang echoed from deeper within the vault. Gorok, in a desperate, final act of spite, had used his cane to smash the primary thermal core regulator, a critical piece of machinery embedded in the wall behind a stack of nutrient barrels. A low, grinding groan reverberated through the very structure of the megastructure.
