Chapter 1 of 10

The Kraken's Spit

893 words

The stench of dying ichor was a familiar comfort. Teshiri ran a hand over the fleshy, chitinous wall of the Void-Kraken's gullet, the organic vibrations beneath her palm a final death rattle. It had been a grand specimen, a deep-storm terror, but even its monstrous bulk couldn't hold the truth of a collapsing reality-fold within its gut. She’d tracked the anomaly, the subtle tear in the sky-shroud, for three cycles, and it had led her directly into this beast’s digestive tract. A fitting end for a journey that had begun with such a bitter taste in her mouth. Her augur-blade, *Sky-Rend*, pulsed with a dull cerulean light, humming against the iridescent membrane. One last cut. The Grand Banquet of the Astral Docks, floating a thousand spans above the Kethari Archipelago, lay just on the other side. She could already hear the muffled din of celebrating voices, the clink of chalices, the unbearable lightness of being. With a grunt, Teshiri plunged *Sky-Rend* deep. The blade met surprisingly little resistance, the Kraken’s necrotic flesh already rotting from the inside. A searing, metallic tang filled the air as the beast convulsed, a final, shuddering spasm that tore through its own internal organs. The pressure outside the membrane intensified, then gave way with a sickening *shlop*. Water—or what passed for it in the storm-riddled Kethari —gushed in, mixed with viscous, oily blood and shredded monster tissue. The section of the high pavilion ceiling, a magnificent dome of woven storm-glass, shattered inwards. Splinters of shimmering crystal rained down, followed by a torrent of putrescent ichor, mangled flesh, and a deluge of the Kraken’s dying fluids. Screams erupted, sharp and immediate, slicing through the polite hum of the gala. Gold-embroidered robes were drenched, silver platters crashed, and the air filled with the gagging cries of the elite. Teshiri dropped through the gaping hole, landing lightly on a table laden with roasted reef-ghasts and candied air-fruit. Her boots squelched in a puddle of greenish-black gore and champagne. She stood amidst the chaos, a grotesque goddess of vengeance, caked in monster viscera, her usually pristine Storm-Augur robes now a canvas of horror. The air, thick with the smell of expensive perfumes and fresh entrails, suddenly felt colder. Her eyes, sharp as a gale, swept across the horrified faces, past the scrambling attendants, and the stunned aristocrats. They landed, inevitably, on *him*. Khados of House Vathakar, a man whose tailored robes were blessedly untouched by the Kraken's bounty, stood frozen mid-sip of a ruby-red cordial. His usually arrogant face was a mask of utter disbelief. And beside him, her hand tucked delicately into his, was Pashari. The timid girl, the stand-in, styled in Teshiri’s own signature braid, her pale robes a shade lighter than Teshiri's preferred azure, her eyes wide with a mimicry of Teshiri’s own once-unwavering gaze. Khados had always preferred his women pliable, predictable. Pashari, a shadow, a whisper, was everything Teshiri wasn’t. And yet, the blatant imitation, the sheer audacity of it, scraped a raw nerve Teshiri had thought long-since cauterized. “Teshiri?” Khados’ voice was a strangled sound, barely audible over the ongoing panic. He looked from the raining gore to Teshiri, then to Pashari, a desperate guilt already twisting his features. Pashari, for her part, simply recoiled, pulling her hand from Khados’s grip, her face paling further than the Kraken’s bleached bones. Teshiri didn’t dignify him with a direct answer. She reached into the pocket of her gore-soaked robe. Her fingers closed around the familiar, cool weight of the Vathakar engagement ring—a massive, flawless shard of deep-storm obsidian, set in a band of braided electrum. A symbol of unbreakable pacts, of empires built on the backs of Storm-Augurs like her. She held it up, letting it catch the flickering light from the few remaining glow-globes. It spun, reflecting the horror and confusion in the room. With a flick of her wrist, Teshiri sent the priceless ring spinning through the air. It arced cleanly, a dark meteor against the chaos, and landed with a definitive *plink* into a roaring brazier centered on the feast-board. The obsidian, impervious to common flame, simply absorbed the heat, glowing with a malevolent inner light, utterly lost amidst the crackling embers. A hush, deeper than any silence the Astral Docks had ever known, fell across the hall. Even the remaining screams died in throats. “I have no time for a cheating aristocrat,” Teshiri’s voice cut through the stillness, cold as a winter gale, loud enough to echo off the remaining storm-glass dome. Her words weren't a plea, nor a lament, but a pronouncement, delivered with surgical precision. As she spoke, a network of fine, glowing black veins pulsed faintly on the side of her neck, just beneath the collar of her ruined robe, a brief, stark contrast to her pale skin. The Void-rot, a constant, creeping reminder of her finite time. She looked directly at Khados, her gaze unwavering, completely devoid of sentiment. “Furthermore, this assembly is now subject to the ancient laws of the Augur’s Decree. By my return, and as the rightful Grand Storm-Augur of the Kethari Archipelago, I hereby invoke the Tenth Accord of the Elder Covenant.” Her voice deepened, resonating with an authority that brooked no argument. “House Vathakar is permanently stripped of all deep-storm transit privileges and banned from all charted safe sea-lanes, effective immediately. Consider your empire sunk.”
