Chapter 2: Whispers in the Walls

2.0k words

Silence pressed in. Jellybell's heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Her mother's words echoed, cold and clinical, twisting her insides. *Condition. Emotional conditioning. Unforeseen side effect.* She was a project. A specimen. The thought made her stomach churn. Jinx would be waiting. Turning, Jellybell crept back towards their room. Each step felt heavy, burdened by the terrible weight of what she'd heard. She pushed the door open, found Jinx curled on her bed, eyes wide and anxious. Jinx looked up, a silent question in her gaze. "Jelly?" Jinx's voice was a soft whisper. Jellybell sank onto the edge of the bed. Her throat felt tight, constricted. How could she tell her? How could she explain the betrayal that clawed at her own being, and what it meant for both of them? "Mom... I heard Mom talking." Jinx sat up, her brow furrowing. "Talking about what?" "Us," Jellybell managed, the word tasting like ash. "About me. About... my condition. Our connection. She called it an 'unforeseen side effect.'" Jinx's eyes widened, a flicker of something raw and hurt passing through them. "Unforeseen side effect?" "She said my 'intense attachment' to you was a result of 'emotional conditioning.'" Jellybell's voice cracked. "Like I'm... some experiment." A wave of anger washed over Jinx's face, swift and dark. Her hands clenched into fists against the duvet. "An experiment? What does that even mean?" "I don't know." Tears welled in Jellybell's eyes. "But it felt... cold. Detached. Like we aren't her daughters, just subjects." Jinx reached out, her fingers brushing Jellybell's arm. Her touch was warm, solid. "No. We're not subjects. We're sisters. We're us." Jellybell leaned into the touch, desperate for its reassurance. The world outside felt sharp, dangerous. Jinx's presence was the only safe harbor. "It makes sense, though, doesn't it?" Jinx's voice was low, thoughtful. "The way she watches us. The little tests. The strange questions." "What tests?" Jellybell pulled back slightly, bewildered. "Remember when she’d ask if we felt 'different' towards each other than other people?" Jinx recalled. "Or those weird questionnaires about 'unique bonds' and 'intense emotional mirroring'?" Jellybell remembered. They’d always brushed them off, thinking it was just their mother being eccentric, or overly interested in their twin bond. Now, a chill ran down her spine. "This is... it's awful, Jinx." Jinx nodded, her expression grim. She pulled Jellybell closer, wrapping an arm around her. Their bodies pressed together, a familiar comfort. "It doesn't change anything, though," Jinx murmured, her breath warm against Jellybell's ear. "Whatever she wants to call it. Whatever she's done. It doesn't change how I feel." Jellybell felt a surge of relief, potent and overwhelming. That was all that mattered. Jinx felt it too. "I love you, Jinx," she whispered, the words a sacred vow. "I love you too, Jelly." --- Minutes later, a growl rumbled from Jellybell's stomach, breaking the heavy silence. They both startled, then giggled softly. The tension eased, if only a fraction. "I'm starving," Jellybell admitted. "Do you think we can sneak down for a snack?" Jinx considered it. "Mom's probably in her study now, or on the phone. She won't notice." They moved with careful stealth, tiptoeing down the grand staircase. The house felt vast, silent, and suddenly menacing. Every creak of the floorboards seemed to amplify the earlier revelations. Entering the kitchen, the familiar scent of herbs and freshly baked bread offered a momentary illusion of normalcy. Jinx went straight to the fridge, pulling out a container of leftover pasta. "Want to just eat here?" Jinx asked, her voice hushed. Jellybell nodded, taking a seat at the large island. The kitchen, usually a bustling hub, felt strangely intimate now. Their shared secret, their forbidden bond, made every shared moment feel more potent. Jinx dished out the pasta onto two plates. Their fingers brushed as she handed one over. A spark, familiar yet heightened, passed between them. They ate in silence, the quiet punctuated by the clinking of forks. Jellybell found herself watching Jinx, observing the curve of her cheek, the way her hair fell across her shoulder. Every detail was precious, magnified by the fear that it could all be taken away. Jinx caught her gaze, a soft smile gracing her lips. "What is it?" "Just... you," Jellybell confessed, her voice barely audible. Jinx reached across the island, taking Jellybell's hand. Her thumb stroked the back of Jellybell's fingers, a slow, gentle rhythm. The warmth spread, igniting a familiar ache deep within Jellybell's chest. "You're so beautiful," Jinx whispered, her eyes locking onto Jellybell's. A blush crept up Jellybell's neck. Her heart quickened its pace. The words, the touch, they stripped away the fear, leaving only this burning, undeniable connection. Slowly, Jinx stood, pulling Jellybell up with her. The plates were forgotten. Their hands remained clasped, then Jinx's fingers intertwined with Jellybell's, pulling her closer. "I can't stop thinking about it," Jinx breathed, her lips just inches from Jellybell's. "Our kiss. Last night." Jellybell's breath hitched. She remembered every detail. The press of Jinx's lips, the tangle of their hair, the way her body had come alive under Jinx's touch. It was wrong, they knew, but it felt so profoundly right. "Me neither," Jellybell admitted, her voice trembling. Their bodies were almost touching, a whisper of air between them. The scent of Jinx's shampoo, faint and floral, filled Jellybell's senses. Jinx's eyes dropped to Jellybell's lips, then back up. A silent question. Jellybell answered by leaning in, closing the distance. Their mouths met, soft at first, then urgent, hungry. A sigh escaped Jellybell's throat as Jinx's arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against her. The kitchen faded. The world outside the house, the world of judging eyes and whispered condemnation, vanished. There was only Jinx, her touch, her taste, the frantic beat of her own heart mirroring Jellybell's. Their lips parted, gasping for air. Jinx's forehead rested against Jellybell's. "This is... dangerous," Jinx murmured, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "So dangerous," Jellybell agreed, her voice thick with emotion. Her hands moved from Jinx's shoulders, tracing the line of her neck, then burying themselves in Jinx's soft hair. "We should... not be doing this here," Jinx whispered, her lips brushing Jellybell's as she spoke. Her eyes sparkled with a wild, exhilarating light. Jellybell nodded, her chest heaving. The thrill of being caught, the recklessness of their actions, only intensified the desire. "Our room." --- Moments later, they tumbled into their shared bedroom, breathless and flushed. The door clicked shut behind them. The soft glow of the bedside lamp cast long shadows. They fell onto Jinx's bed, laughing softly, their bodies entangled. Jinx reached for the remote, flicking on the large television mounted on the wall. A romantic comedy began to play, its cheerful music a stark contrast to the storm brewing within them. They tried to focus, tried to lose themselves in the on-screen drama, but their gaze kept drifting, finding each other. Jellybell felt Jinx's hand slip into hers under the duvet. Their fingers intertwined, a silent language passing between them. The movie became a blur of colors and muffled sounds. Their attention was on each other, on the subtle shifts of their bodies, the warmth radiating between them. Jinx turned, her body facing Jellybell's. Her knee brushed Jellybell's thigh. The contact was electric, a jolt of pleasure that shot through Jellybell's veins. She leaned in, resting her head on Jinx's shoulder, inhaling her scent. "This movie is boring," Jinx mumbled, her voice low and husky. "Terrible," Jellybell agreed, her own voice barely a whisper. She felt Jinx's arm slide around her, pulling her closer still. Their cheeks pressed together, then Jinx's fingers began to trace patterns on Jellybell's arm, sending shivers through her. Jinx tilted Jellybell's chin up. Her eyes, dark and intense, searched Jellybell's face. "I want you, Jelly. So much." The confession was raw, honest, and utterly disarming. Jellybell's heart throbbed. "I want you too, Jinx. More than anything." Their lips met again, a deeper, more desperate kiss than before. It was a fusion of longing and fear, defiance and devotion. Jinx's hands moved to Jellybell's waist, then up her back, pulling her even tighter. Jellybell's fingers fisted in Jinx's shirt, tugging. Their clothes felt like a barrier, an unnecessary obstruction. A knock sounded on the door, startling them. "Girls? Everything alright in there? I heard some noise." Elara's voice. Cold dread washed over Jellybell. She froze, pulling away from Jinx, her eyes wide with panic. Jinx, however, simply tightened her grip on Jellybell's hand. She met Jellybell's gaze, a determined fire in her eyes. "We're fine, Mom!" Jinx called out, her voice surprisingly steady, though a little breathless. She gave Jellybell a reassuring squeeze. "Just watching a movie." "Alright," Elara's voice sounded closer, a shadow under the door. "Don't stay up too late. And Jellybell, remember what we talked about." The implied threat hung in the air. Jellybell's breath hitched. But Jinx didn't flinch. Instead, she rose, walked to the door, and with a soft click, locked it. She turned back to Jellybell, a defiant smirk playing on her lips. "She can talk all she wants," Jinx said, her voice a low growl. "She can't stop us." Jellybell watched her, a mix of fear and exhilaration swirling within her. Jinx returned to the bed, her gaze never leaving Jellybell's. She reached out, her fingers brushing Jellybell's cheek, then gently cupping her jaw. The world outside, the prying eyes, their mother's words – they all receded. There was only this, this raw, undeniable pull between them. --- Later, much later, after the movie ended and the moon had climbed high, a restless energy stirred within Jellybell. Jinx was asleep beside her, her breathing soft and even. But Jellybell couldn't rest. Elara's words, the idea of being a 'subject,' gnawed at her. She slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb Jinx. The need for answers, for understanding, was a sharp ache in her gut. She knew where Elara kept her most private things. The study. Creeping down the hall, the house was silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator. The study door was ajar, a sliver of darkness. She pushed it open, the scent of old paper and dust greeting her. Elara's desk was neatly arranged, but Jellybell knew her mother had hidden compartments. Her fingers traced the smooth, polished wood of the desk. A faint seam along the side. She pressed, and a small drawer clicked open. Inside, not financial documents, but a stack of leather-bound journals. They looked old, worn. Jellybell pulled one out. Its pages were filled with neat, intricate handwriting, interspersed with diagrams. Complex emotional diagrams. Flowcharts detailing 'response patterns' and 'attachment metrics.' Her blood ran cold. This wasn't a diary. This was research. She flipped through, her eyes scanning for familiar words. And then she saw it, scrawled repeatedly: 'Project Chimera.' Beneath it, her own name, and Jinx's, often side-by-side. Observations. Data points. Her heart pounded, a frantic drum against her ribs. She wasn't just a daughter; she was a case study. A specimen. The cold, clinical betrayal of it choked her. Another journal. More diagrams. References to 'genetic predispositions' and 'environmental triggers.' It felt like reading the blueprint of her own soul, dissected and analyzed without her consent. A quiet, desperate need for answers ignited within her, burning away the last vestiges of her childhood innocence. She gently closed the drawer, the journals’ secrets heavy in her mind. Retreating from the study, she returned to their room, her head swimming. Jinx shifted in her sleep. Jellybell climbed back into bed, pulling the duvet over herself. Her gaze fell on Jinx's neck, where the heirloom locket rested, a silver oval against her skin. Jinx always wore it. She’d told Jellybell it was empty, just a sentimental piece from their grandmother. But now, as Jellybell stared at it, a faint, almost inaudible clicking sound emanated from its polished surface, making her wonder what other secrets it might hold.
