The Final Course

Scarlet script burned on the glass terminal. [Warning: Rebooting Mainframe will permanently sever all dimensional ties to the Pale Rift. All extant spectral entities, including High-Wraith Kaelan, will undergo immediate and irreversible dissolution.]
Her family’s legacy, the complete downfall of the Directorate, within arm’s reach. But at what cost? Zaelath, the voracious terror who guarded her larders and devoured entire raiding parties, would dissolve back into the rift. The chorus of ravenous phantom patrons would starve.
"The taste of victory, Yeva," the disgraced warden wheezed from the tile. He had clawed his way out of the grimy industrial dish pit, his pristine uniform now a stained ruin, his face smeared with grease. He gripped a serrated nutrient-can scraper. "You think you can play god with my Ascendancy?"
The fallen commander lunged toward the master console.
Drace darted across the floor tiles. He threw himself in front of the terminal, a human shield. “You will not touch the Chef’s work!” he shrieked, his voice cracking with a fanatical devotion that bordered on madness.
The scraper tore through gray synthetic weave. Drace hit the metal decking with a flat smack, hands pressed hard against the red tear across his ribs.
A trained prep cook with an instinct for allium emulsion was irreplaceable in Sector Four. Drace owed her forty years of indenture for culinary tutoring; dying here breached the contract.
The warden kicked Drace aside, raising the steel bar toward the primary conduit.
Yeva ignored the officer, calculating the lost production hours of a trained prep assistant.
A sous-chef who knew how to balance minced shallots without supervision was worth more than raw spite.
[Flavor Impact Quota Failed. Cellular Vitality Draining. Reaching Critical Levels.] A cold chill pinched Yeva's marrow as the protocol skimmed her cellular reserves.
She dropped beside Drace, pressing two fingers to his cooling carotid.
"Chef... the emulsion..." Drace coughed, foam speckling his chin.
"Silence, apprentice. You haven't paid off your prep knives."
"Culinary Synthesis Protocol," Yeva clipped out. "Deduct five hundred favor credits. Dispense an Iron-Root germinator seed."
A rough, phosphor-green seed kernel dropped into her open palm.
She shattered the seed between two heavy prep spoons, scattering oily green dust into a bowl of warm starch slurry.
"Swallow this debt," she ordered, shoving the bitter, steaming paste between his lips. The torn tissue along his ribs sealed with a hiss of vapor.
The warden swung the scraper toward her skull. "A disgraced scullery rat patching up a traitor!"
A vortex of frost snuffed the burners. High-Wraith Zaelath solidified from the exhaust vents, a twelve-foot pillar of rift-smoke, and seized the officer's wrist until the bones grated like gravel.
The man dangled, boots kicking six inches off the tile. "Abomination!"
"She supplies the marrow glaze," Zaelath hissed, teeth rattling like porcelain cups. From his shroud, the phantom extracted an unlabelled flask of concentrated ghost-pepper vinegar.
Zaelath pried the warden's mouth open and tipped the boiling red fluid into his gullet. The warden gagged, nose dripping clear mucus, skin blazing mottled plum as the heat seared his palate.
Zaelath dropped him like a soiled rag onto the grease-trap grate.
Drace hauled himself up, fingering the fresh pink scar on his ribs, before picking up his prep whisk without a word.
Yeva turned back to the glowing panel, thumb resting over the baseline reboot switch.
Zaelath drifted behind her, tendrils of rift-frost licking her shoulders. "Press it, Chef. But roast the imperial grain reserves first."
