Her fingers bypassed the black glass barrel that would buy her ticket home, closing instead around the sapphire-tinted plunger. A sudden, sharp memory, unbidden and unwelcome, ripped through her mind. She saw it again: the smoke-choked alley, the glint of the Zharn-blade in her former partner’s back. Not Rhozal, but Kaelor, another who had trusted her. The bounty board had promised a payout substantial enough to purchase a quiet plot under a twin-sun sky. She’d hesitated, just for a breath, between calling out a betrayal she’d only half-sensed, or securing her future. The payout had been real. Kaelor’s demise had been real. Her own, later, an ironic echo. “Vondris? Time is rather… elastic, but not infinite for the terminally ill.” Okhmar’s voice, annoyingly chipper, pierced the haze of the past. “A decision, if you please. The monster is rather eager for a final embrace.” Her teeth clicked shut. Not again. Not for bonus tallies. Not for some sterile homestead. She had built her future on the ashes of her past, determined to never again depend on another, to never again falter. But Rhozal… Rhozal was different. He had covered her retreat, taken a hero’s fall for her. He had endured a life of chains. He had, inexplicably, decided she was worth dying for, and then, miraculously, worth living for. A quiet exile in a purchased paradise tasted like stale chalk against the raw devotion burning in his amber gaze. With cold malice aimed squarely at her own ledger, Vondris drove the sapphire glass downward. She didn’t hesitate this time. Her hand plunged it into Rhozal’s chest, directly over his heart, through the torn fabric of his gladiator harness. The plunger depressed with a soft, squelching thud. The vibrant liquid surged into him. [Co-dependency Protocol Activated. Life-force Transfer Initialized.] [Interdimensional Logistics Interface: Total Point Balance – 0.00. She had chosen. She had chosen him. Every single point, every sacrifice, every painful assignment, gone. Just… gone. She wasn't free; she was chained to a new, endless grind. A permanent fixer, forever beholden to the whims of a poorly translated cosmic accounting office. But a strange, fierce warmth ignited in Rhozal. His muscles, previously slack and dying, coiled. The pallor of death receded, replaced by a vibrant, almost ethereal sheen under his fur. His scales, dulled by the parasite, flared with a deep indigo sheen. His clawed hands clenched, then stretched, the sound of tearing sinew oddly satisfying. Mutated-Tavlos, a grotesque mountain of pulsing flesh and gnashing teeth, roared. He had been slowly shambling towards Vondris, savoring the moment, but the sudden, raw surge of power from Rhozal shifted his focus. The hero’s eyes, now a multitude of bloodshot orbs scattered across his misshapen head, fixed on Vondris. He saw her as the weak link, the mastermind, the one who had truly defied him. He lunged, a tidal wave of putrid muscle and bone, directly at her. Vondris braced herself, the black syringe still clutched uselessly in her hand. She had made her choice, and now she would face the consequences. This was it. The end of her arrogant plans, the final, humiliating chapter. But then, a flash of motion. Rhozal moved. Not with the frantic desperation of a dying man, but with the fluid, terrifying grace of a predator reborn. He struck like an uncoiled siege spring, claws extended. Tavlos’s attack, meant to pulverize Vondris, was met mid-air by Rhozal’s charging form. A deafening crack echoed through the vault as their bodies collided. Tavlos, for the first time, staggered back, a gurgling shriek ripped from his many throats. Rhozal didn't pause. He spun, his re-energized senses locating the pulsing core of the vault’s stolen magic. A stabilization pylon, a jagged obelisk of dark, humming metal, remained wedged into the flagstones to channel power from the lower pens. With a guttural roar, Rhozal drove his claws into the obsidian base of the monolith. Muscles strained, tendons bulged, and with a guttural bellow of pure, unadulterated strength, he ripped it free. Sparks flew, raw arcane energy flared, and the ground trembled as the corrupted artifact tore from its moorings. The pylon was heavy, unwieldy, a weapon of pure spite. Rhozal hefted it like a child’s toy. Tavlos, enraged by this unexpected resistance, lunged again, a fleshy maw distending to swallow Rhozal whole. But the scaled-leopard beastman was faster. He swung the pig-iron shaft in a wide, whistling arc. The impact was sickening, a wet thud followed by the crunch of bone and chitin. One of Tavlos’s many heads exploded in a spray of green ichor and shattered teeth. “Insolent… *beast!*” Tavlos shrieked, his form lurching, oozing, trying to regenerate. His plot armor, once an unyielding shield, seemed to flicker, struggling against the sheer, unbridled force of Rhozal’s fury. [Error: Plot Armor Integrity Compromised. Heroic Narrative Divergence Detected.] Rhozal ignored the struggling form, the arrogant cries. He was a force of nature, a blizzard of claws and raw strength. He didn’t just hit Tavlos; he systematically dismantled him. Each strike of the iron ballast shattered another bone cluster. He crushed limbs, pulped organs, until Tavlos was nothing more than a twitching, shapeless mass of broken flesh and fading, arrogant pride. Finally, with a triumphant, guttural growl, Rhozal brought the anchor down one last, earth-shattering time, pulverizing what was left of Tavlos’s core. The air cleared, the stench of decay slowly dissipating, replaced by the faint scent of ozone and triumph. Tavlos, the self-proclaimed hero, was gone. Absolutely, irrevocably annihilated. The vault was silent, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of Rhozal, who stood, chest heaving, over the hero’s pulverized remains, the bent pylon still dripping in his grip. [Error: Plot Armor destroyed. Transferring Hero's hoarded assets to victor.]
