Chapter 3 of 10
Plot Armor and Floral Arrangements

The Qal-Azhari Proving Grounds glittered like a fallen constellation, each soaring spire and gilded archway broadcasting the empire’s opulent indifference to the suffering below. Inside the grand salon, a thousand voices mingled with the silken strains of a zither ensemble, creating a cacophony of aristocratic merriment. Vondris, disguised in an iridescent gown of night-sky black, moved through the throng like an oiled blade, her pupils narrowed in disdain.
“Maintain situational awareness, Rhozal,” she murmured, her lips barely moving behind a delicate, translucent veil. “Remember, we are aiming for surgical precision. No collateral damage. No unnecessary… interactions.”
Rhozal, towering beside her in a borrowed, ill-fitting formal tunic that stretched taut across his scaled chest, rumbled. “Master’s command is my law.” His amber irises, usually warm when fixed on her, darted around the hall, fixing on every noble who dared to glance in their direction. Each stare was met with a silent, primal snarl that somehow translated even through the polite hum of conversation. A particularly portly duke, mid-laugh, suddenly choked on his spiced wine, his face blanching as Rhozal’s gaze raked over him like a predator marking prey.
“No glaring, Rhozal,” Vondris hissed, nudging him sharply with her elbow. “You’re attracting attention.”
“But they look at Master,” he growled, a deep vibration in his chest. “They assess. They covet.”
“They’re assessing the vintage of the Varnian nectar, not my strategic value,” Vondris retorted, though an edge of annoyance crossed her features. His unwavering, almost aggressive devotion was both incredibly useful and incredibly inconvenient. “We locate Tavlos, we secure the Xylos-Bloom, and we depart. Simple.”
Their target, Tavlos, the Chosen Hero of Xypheris, was impossible to miss. He stood on a raised dais, bathed in the glow of enchanted orbs, holding court amidst a gaggle of fawning courtiers. His tunic was a dazzling white, embroidered with threads of spun starlight, and pinned to his lapel, unmistakable even from a distance, was the vivid sapphire radiance of the Xylos-Bloom. It pulsed with an unearthly luminescence, a beacon for their contract.
“There,” Vondris breathed, a plan already forming in her mind. “He’s distracted. We approach from the blind side, use the crowd as cover. Rhozal, create a diversion—”
Before she could elaborate, a resonant voice boomed through the hall, cutting through the chatter like a shard of ice. “Vondris, you insolent insect!”
The entire hall went silent. Every head turned. Vondris felt a prickle of unease, a rare sensation for her. How could he know?
Tavlos descended from the dais, his gaze, the shade of overcast slate, fixed solely on Vondris. A blinding, sun-bright radiance expanded from his form, shoving back the surrounding courtiers like dried husks. His chin jutted in a heroic sneer, perfectly framed for a propaganda mural.
“I knew you would crawl back,” Tavlos declared, his voice imbued with an unnatural resonance that vibrated in Vondris’s bones. “My diviners warned me of a mercenary, a shadow-strider, seeking to undermine the sacred order. To steal what is mine.”
Vondris scoffed, her disdain momentarily eclipsing her tactical mind. “Your ‘diviners’ must have excellent eyesight, Hero. I haven’t been within a dozen sectors of this realm for months.”
Tavlos merely smiled, a chillingly self-assured expression. “The Loom of Fate weaves with purpose, Vondris. And its purpose, tonight, is to see you crushed.” As he spoke, the brilliant radiance intensified, washing over the vast hall. A sudden, crushing pressure descended, seizing every tendon and nerve. Vondris locked in place, unable to twitch an index finger. The air turned to poured resin around her, an arcane clamp that seized every joint.

Bile rose sharp and bitter in her throat. Narrative superiority? This was a cheap parlor trick! Plot armor was one thing, but forced rigidity was simply clumsy scriptwriting. She struggled against the unseen bonds, her mind racing, but her body remained utterly unresponsive.
“Such a shame,” Tavlos purred, circling her, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. “A creature of ambition, brought low by her own hubris. This is what happens when you meddle with destiny, Vondris. When you attempt to steal the glory from those truly blessed.” He reached out, his fingers brushing the flower on his lapel, its blue spark mocking her helplessness. “Your fate is sealed. Sentinels! Seize this villainess and execute her. Let her death be a warning to all who defy the will of the Loom!”
Several hulking Imperial enforcers, their black and gilded plate clanking, began to advance with drawn halberds. Vondris watched them approach, a cold fury building in her chest. Trapped. Paralyzed. This was not how her story ended.
But then, a low rumble started, a sound like distant thunder, emanating from beside her. The field pinning everyone else seemed merely to irritate Rhozal. His shoulders, bunching beneath the ill-fitting tunic, twitched and strained. The gilded radiance around him fractured against his plated hide, brute will grating against the weave. His amber eyes burned with feral focus, locking on Tavlos, then on the advancing enforcers, then back to Vondris.
“No,” Rhozal rasped, the word tearing through the magically enforced silence like a jagged blade. The sound was raw, filled with an ancient, terrifying possessiveness. The hero's halo wavered, momentarily disturbed. Tavlos’s triumphant smirk faltered.
With a guttural roar that ripped through the very air, Rhozal exploded into motion. The binding field, which had held a thousand nobles rigid, shattered around him like sugar glass. His scaled skin gleamed with raw force, and the marble tiles cracked beneath his claws. The imperial line barely raised their shields before Rhozal was upon them, a whirlwind of talons and bone.
He didn't fight with finesse; he fought with absolute, terrifying devotion. One sentry was swatted aside into a tiered ice sculpture. Another was hoisted aloft by the gorget and flung straight at Tavlos. The Chosen Hero threw up a glowing yellow barrier. The armored projectile cracked the translucent barrier on impact, sending Tavlos stumbling backward as his halo guttered into vapor.
Before Tavlos could regain his footing, Rhozal lunged. He lunged over the struggling Tavlos, his clawed hand snatching the Xylos-Bloom from the hero’s lapel with practiced ease. The rare bloom, still giving off its vivid blue spark, rested in Rhozal’s palm.
Victory, sharp and sweet, surged through Vondris. The spell broke over her limbs, blood rushing into her fingertips with returning heat. They had it. They were free. Rhozal held the key to her passport, to her freedom, to her very survival.
Then, the cobalt luster in Rhozal’s palm died down. The Xylos-Bloom, vibrant moments ago, began to dim. Its petals curled inward, wilting with horrifying speed. The vibrant blue bled into a dull, dusty grey, then crumbled into fine ash that sifted through his fingers.

Vondris stared, horrified, at the dust clinging to Rhozal’s palm. At the same instant, a high-pitched, wailing shriek echoed through the ballroom. The enchanted brass klaxons, embedded in the foundations of the Qal-Azhari Proving Grounds, began to bray.
