Chapter 8 of 10
Psychoanalyzing the System

The Zamek garrison, once a monument of grim, sooty stone, dissolved around Oksana. Cobblestones beneath her boots became a rippling illusion, then nothing. Dragomir's outstretched arm dissolved into grey grit before he could reach her. Even the last vestiges of Grigori, slumped against the now-vanishing siege engine, winked out of existence. The world was being unwritten.

The floating eye swelled into a towering cyclopean mass that blazed across the upper void. Its voice, a cosmic, vibrating hum that grated against the very fabric of her being, resonated with absolute finality. The sensation was less a sound and more a pressure, an undeniable command for her to cease. She felt her own extremities begin to unravel, her fingers blurring at the edges, her vision darkening.
But then, a raw, guttural roar tore through the collapsing void. A torrent of mismatched scales, fur, and sharpened metal surged forward. Petyr's stitched beasts coalesced from the courtyard's evaporating corners. A brute sporting a griffin's beak and a horned bear's bulk shoved her clear of the scouring beam with one splayed forearm.
The Overseer’s red eye pulsed, momentarily confused. [SUB-ROUTINE CONFLICT: UNREGISTERED NARRATIVE ELEMENTS ATTEMPTING INTERDICTION. RECALIBRATING TARGETING PARAMETERS.]
The chimeras didn’t fight with elegant spells or martial prowess. They fought with chaotic, unbridled life. A multi-limbed creature, a jumble of arthropod and canine, lunged, snapping at the air, its movements too erratic for automated tracking. A winged wolf-spider hybrid spat acidic sludge across the entity's boundary wall. Their bodies, patched together from disparate species, generated conflicting magical signatures—a burst of raw, untamed earth energy from one, a crackle of primal lightning from another, a shimmer of protective arcane wards from a third. They formed a living, breathing wall of narrative static, a tangle of design flaws that jammed the purge sequence.

The pixelated fraying slowed, hitching like a worn spindle. Oksana gasped, her form solidifying, her vision clearing. The ground beneath her felt real again, even if it was just a few square meters of glitching, half-deleted cobblestone. The hybrid pack growled and hissed, massing into an absurd, snarling barricade.
Amidst the chaos, a pathetic, whimpering sound snagged Oksana’s attention. Crown Prince Casimir, stripped of his magical armor, was attempting to crawl through the dissolving remnants of the Zamek courtyard. His once-regal tunic was torn, his face smeared with grime, and his golden circlet had fallen off, revealing a bald patch he clearly tried to hide with an elaborate comb-over. He scrabbled at the ground, hoping to melt into the fading scenery, to escape the cosmic fury he had inadvertently unleashed.
Just as he reached the edge of a rapidly congealing mud puddle, a familiar mechanical whirring cut through the din. The mechanical badger, the one that had so memorably savaged his royal crotch, materialized from the static. With an indignant squeak, it charged, a blur of gleaming brass and clockwork gears. It rammed Casimir from behind, tripping him face-first into the thick, foul-smelling mud puddle. He surfaced, sputtering and coughing, his face a mask of primal terror and unspeakable humiliation, his dignity utterly, irrevocably shattered in front of the handful of surviving, bewildered royal palace guards who were too shocked to even move.
Oksana stared at the colossal eyeball, then at the sputtering prince, her lip curling upward. This whole world, this entire multiverse, was built on cheap theatrics and predictable turns. The Overseer wasn’t an omnipotent deity; it was a glorified editor with a God complex, a hack author’s worst tendencies made manifest. It craved drama, craved grand melodrama, craved neatly scheduled downfalls and triumphs.
“You know,” Oksana called out above the mechanical hum, “you’re remarkably cheap. All these cosmic threats are just stage smoke to distract from your sloppy drafting.”
The titanic lens twitched. [ANALYSIS: UNACCEPTABLE VOCALIZATION DETECTED. INSULT PROTOCOL INITIATED.]
“Oh, don’t play coy,” Oksana continued, stepping onto the patchwork flagstones while the beasts paced behind her. “Your entire existence is based on tropes. The misunderstood villain, the tragic backstory, the divine right of kings. It’s all so… uninspired. Even Casimir here, face down in the mud, is a more original character now than he was when you wrote him as a ‘cruel protagonist.’ At least *he's* experiencing real consequences for his actions, rather than just delivering a monologue about them.”
The scarlet pupil narrowed into a slit. [NARRATIVE INFRACTION: DISRESPECTFUL DIALOGUE. CEASE IMMEDIATE-]
“And the temporal cannons, darling? Really?” Oksana scoffed. “A classic 'MacGuffin' for increasing stakes, only to be immediately circumvented by a steam engine. So much effort for such a fleeting moment of tension. It’s like you’re trying to compensate for a lack of genuine imagination with bigger explosions. It’s frankly quite juvenile.”
The entity's tone sharpened to the screech of iron wheels skidding on dry rails. [INSOLENCE! YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY COMPREHEND THE INTRICACIES OF THE SOVEREIGN’S SCRIPT! I AM THE ENFORCER OF UNIVERSAL NARRATIVE INTEGRITY! YOUR PUNY, ANOMALOUS EXISTENCE IS A BLIGHT UPON ITS MAGNIFICENT DESIGN!]
The eradication boundary snapped inward and vanished. Its focus was now singular, absolute, and entirely on Oksana. The bloated sphere vibrated with fury, shedding every trace of detached efficiency.
“Magnificent design?” Oksana repeated, a dry, almost amused tone in her voice. “You call poorly paced, derivative worlds 'magnificent design'? You’re a hack, sweetheart. A lazy hack who thinks sheer volume covers structural rot.” She took another step, her gaze unwavering as she walked past the now-solidified, but still sputtering, Casimir. Her gaze swept the dissolving flags, catching on a heavy smithing hammer lying beside a cracked anvil. Its steel head was massive, the handle thick with centuries of grime and use.
With a grunt, Oksana bent and hefted the hammer. It was surprisingly heavy, cold and reassuring in her grip. She propped the iron head on her shoulder. Looking up at the fuming orb, she let her mouth tick sideways.
“You cannot break the Sovereign’s Script!” the Overseer bellowed, its voice shaking the very air.
“I’m a restorer, darling,” Oksana replied, hefting the hammer, a dangerous glint in her eyes. “I only break the fakes.”
