Chapter 8 of 10
The Engagement Gala

The Sapphire Room pulsed with the low thrum of ambition and the clinking of crystal flutes. A thousand eyes, accustomed to dissecting fortunes and reputations, now scanned the gleaming expanse for any sign of weakness. Theron Galt, trapped in a bespoke charcoal suit that felt like a straitjacket, plastered a brittle smile on his face. Beside him, Nessa, draped in a shimmering gown that strained over her pronounced, prosthetic belly, leaned in, whispering about her cousin's latest market strategy. Her touch on his arm felt like a spider’s crawl. He nodded, feigning interest, his gaze flicking to the entrance, a desperate, irrational hope fluttering in his chest.
He’d spent the last twenty-four hours in a purgatorial loop, navigating the debris of his shattered life. Severin was unreachable, the archives sealed, and every contact he’d tried to leverage had suddenly developed convenient amnesia. The rival faction, sensing the shift in power, had encircled him like vultures, demanding he present a unified front at this pre-Summit gala. He was a puppet, dancing for a new master, all because he’d chosen fool’s gold over a diamond. The memory of Verena’s cold, triumphant face in the archives, the flash drive on the table, the undeniable truth of Nessa’s fraud — it gnawed at him, a virulent poison.
“Darling, you’re looking distant,” Nessa purred, her voice sweet as saccharine. She tightened her grip, her painted smile unwavering as a dozen photographers aimed their lenses. “We must look the picture of devotion, for the board's sake.”
Theron forced a chuckle, the sound hollow even to his own ears. He met her gaze, cold bile coating his tongue, though she remained blithely blind to his revolt. “Of course, my love,” he murmured, the words tasting like ash. The press converged, a hungry swarm, their flashes popping like distant gunfire. Nessa, ever the performer, nestled into his side, her hand resting protectively over her fake pregnancy. She saw his withdrawal, felt the shift, and she was already maneuvering.
Suddenly, Nessa gasped, a dramatic, breathy sound that cut through the low hum of conversation. Her hand flew to her lower back. “Oh!” she cried, a theatrical tremor in her voice. “My goodness, Theron! I think… I think my water just broke!”
A collective gasp rippled through the room. Photographers surged forward, their flashes intensifying. Theron stared, numb, as a dark, glistening stain spread across the elegant silk of Nessa’s gown, carefully placed by a pre-loaded bladder she must have concealed. The crowd’s murmur swelled to an excited roar. This was it. The public spectacle. The final, inescapable trap.
He wanted to scream, to expose her right there, but his cousin, standing nearby with a predatory grin, caught his eye and shook his head almost imperceptibly. Theron was caught. He was about to be bound to this fraud, this charade, for all to see. He reached out to steady Nessa, his movements stiff, mechanical, the ultimate fool playing his part.
Just then, the grand main doors to the Sapphire Room swung open with a silent, authoritative grace. Every head turned. A figure stood silhouetted against the opulent hallway lights, radiating an aura that silenced the room more effectively than any security detail. Verena Morvath. She wore a gown of midnight blue velour, cut to a breathtaking, almost architectural precision, shimmering with micro-sequins that caught the light like scattered starlight. A necklace of raw, unpolished jet stones adorned her throat, stark against her pale skin. Her hair, usually a disciplined cascade, was swept into an intricate, almost sculptural knot, revealing the sharp, intelligent planes of her face.
She moved with the devastating calm of a predator entering a pen of sheep. On her wrist, a delicate gold bracelet gleamed, from which hung a single, large diamond, cut with a rare, complex facet. It was her master-key drive, custom-made, disguised as high couture. As she glided past the gaping socialites, her thumb brushed the diamond. A faint, almost inaudible hum filled the air.
Then, the ballroom’s elaborate AV system, usually reserved for corporate presentations and tribute videos, flickered. The soft, ambient lighting of the Sapphire Room intensified, focusing on the vast, gilded projection walls. The elegant, swirling patterns vanished, replaced by a stark, magnified image: a receipt from ‘Oakhaven Prosthetics & Theatrical Props’ for one ‘Deluxe Silicone Pregnancy Belly, Stage-Grade, with self-puncturing water reservoir.’
A ripple of shock, followed by venomous titters, swept through the room. Nessa’s theatrical wail of ‘labor’ died in her throat. Her gaze darted from the projected image to Verena, then to Theron. Her face, moments ago a mask of pain, now contorted into a grotesque grimace of pure fury.
Before the crowd could fully process the first image, it dissolved, replaced by a prescription bottle. The label, blown up to gargantuan proportions, clearly read: ‘Nessa Fane. Rx: Altoid Mints. Take as needed for fresh breath.’
Laughter erupted, sharp and cruel, echoing off the high ceilings. It started as a few isolated snickers, then grew into a roaring chorus of derision. The elite of Oakhaven, masters of social execution, were reveling in Theron’s public downfall. His face burned. He felt the blood drain from his cheeks, leaving him cold and clammy. He was the fool. The ultimate, spectacular fool. He’d sacrificed everything for *breath mints*.
Nessa, her carefully constructed world crumbling around her, shrieked, a raw, animalistic sound of pure rage. She lunged, not at Theron, but at Verena, her clawed hands reaching, aiming for the elegant throat adorned with jet. But before she could take two steps, a figure moved with lightning speed, appearing seemingly from nowhere. Severin Galt, his expression a thunderous mask, intercepted Nessa with brutal efficiency. His hand shot out, locking around her forearm, spinning her around and pinning her against a decorative marble pillar before she could reach Verena. He held her there, a silent, menacing sentinel, his dark eyes never leaving Verena’s face, a silent question passing between them.
Verena met his gaze, a subtle, almost imperceptible nod her only acknowledgement before she turned back to the unfolding chaos. The ballroom was in an uproar. Security guards, bewildered, tried to restore order amidst the cacophony of laughter and gasps. Theron stood frozen, humiliated beyond measure, watching his life unravel in a series of projected receipts.
Then, another voice, smooth and insidious, cut through the din. Julian Galt, flanked by two stern-faced men in crisp suits, stepped onto a raised platform near the main stage. A smug grin stretched across his face, belying the gravitas of his words. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian announced, his voice amplified by the hastily activated microphone system, “it appears certain… irregularities… have come to light regarding the current leadership of Galt Holdings.” He paused, letting the silence settle. The two men flanking him, their badges gleaming under the lights, were federal marshals. “As per the provisions of the Morvath-Galt Inter-Corporate Governance Act of 1978, and due to a series of egregious financial and ethical breaches, I am authorized by the Oakhaven Regulatory Commission to announce the immediate seizure of Galt Holdings. Effective immediately, the company is under new management.”
