Chapter 4 of 10
Item Swap

His mind raced, sifting through fragments of old speedrun footage. A forgotten trick. The ‘Reforge Roll.’ It wasn't meant for combat, but for resetting physics anomalies during item acquisition. It exploited the system’s frantic attempt to re-render a character model upon equipping a high-tier, uninitialized item mid-animation.
He had to equip the Codex. Not just hold it. Equip it. Now.
“Hold on!” he roared, the sound raw in his throat. Vlasta’s eyes, wide with horror, flickered to him, but the deletion continued, a sickening shimmer of her forearm disappearing.
Olek dropped his wooden ladle, letting it clatter into the static floor. His fingers, slick with sweat, fumbled to bring the heavy Chasm Codex up. He had to replace his main-hand weapon slot with this heavy tome. It wasn't designed to be equipped, but the game had no fail-safes for *this*.
He sucked in a ragged breath and lunged, tucking into a clumsy combat roll. Mid-tumble, his thumbs flew across the phantom menu. The Codex’s icon snapped into the weapon slot. Cold, sterile static surged through him, like plugging into a shorted wire.
[Action: Item 'Chasm Codex' equipped. Conflict: Item not categorized as 'Weapon'.]
[Anomaly detected: Equipping invalid item mid-roll animation. Attempting character model refresh for all proximate entities.]
A blinding flash of static erupted around Vlasta. The hound recoiled with a digital snarl, its polygonal form flickering. Where Vlasta’s arm had dissolved into shimmering motes, a shock of white light snapped backward, coalescing. Her uniform, the faint outline of her musculature, the very pores of her skin, snapped back into place. The rapier, previously broken into jagged wireframes, reformed in her grasp.
She gasped, her chest heaving, staring at her miraculously restored limb, then at Olek, her eyes a mix of shock and confusion. The Reforge Roll had worked. But the cost.
Exhaustion dragged him down like lead ballast. His limbs felt like lead, his vision blurred at the edges. The forced model reset had siphoned his vitality, pushed his stamina to the absolute brink. He stumbled, collapsing to one knee, the Chasm Codex heavy in his hand.
The Sanitizer hound, its initial confusion clearing, let out a piercing shriek of pure data corruption. It lunged again, its target now Olek, the anomaly, the bug. Its jaws distended, a gaping maw of nothingness, ready to erase him.
Before it could connect, the hidden room itself shuddered. The walls of half-rendered architecture buckled, not disintegrating into scanlines, but shattering like brittle glass. A roar, not of an animal, but of pure, unrestrained magic, ripped through the air.
“GET AWAY FROM HIM!”
The voice was Danika’s, laced with a terrifying, primal fury. She burst through the newly formed opening, her eyes glowing with an incandescent, violet light. Raw violet sparks hissed along her sleeves, making the air smell of scorched ozone. She didn't bother with incantations or gestures. She just *willed* it.
A deluge of force, like solidified lightning mixed with spectral fire, erupted from her. It wasn’t a spell; it was an overload, a direct attack on the hound’s very code. The Sanitizer hound shrieked again, a sound of agony as its polygonal form began to crack, not like glass, but like a corrupted file disintegrating. Its jagged edges frayed, its internal geometry buckled, and with a final, echoing screech of corrupted data, it imploded, vanishing into a single, lingering ripple of black soot.
Silence descended, broken only by Danika’s ragged breathing and the soft, crackling afterglow in her eyes. She stood amidst the shattered remnants of the developer room, her gaze fixed on Olek, her features contorted by a furious protectiveness. Her fists clenched, trembling with the residual power.
“Are you hurt?” she demanded, her voice tight, a cold edge beneath the concern. She stalked towards him, ignoring Vlasta entirely, her violet eyes scanning him for any damage. “Did it touch you?”
Vlasta, still disoriented, pushed herself up, her gaze darting between the spot where the hound had been and Danika, whose aura pulsed with volatile heat. “Danika Moroz, what in the blazes was that?” she managed, her voice hoarse.
Danika barely spared her a glance. “A pest,” she snapped, her eyes still locked on Olek. “A nuisance that dared to get close.” She reached out, her fingers brushing Olek’s cheek, her touch surprisingly gentle after the cataclysm she’d just unleashed. “You’re shaking.”
“I’m fine,” Olek lied, trying to push himself up. His legs felt like jelly. The Codex felt like a lead weight. “Just… the stamina drain.”
Jarek, who had been leaning against a broken bookshelf, watching the room collapse, suddenly let out a strangled cough. He stumbled forward, clutching his chest. His face, already pale, turned a sickly grey.
“Jarek?” Olek pushed past Danika, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten. “What’s wrong?”
Jarek collapsed to his knees, gasping, his fingers tearing at the collar of his uniform shirt. The coarse fabric ripped, revealing the skin beneath. Across his sternum, a network of iridescent, crystalline growths had bloomed. Jagged shards of what looked like solidified ice or shattered amethyst protruded from his flesh, some glowing with a faint, malevolent purple light.
“It’s… spreading,” Jarek choked out, his body wracked with shivers. “The Rot…”
Danika’s eyes, still glowing faintly, narrowed. Vlasta took a step back, her expression hardening with grim recognition. The Hollow Rot. A death sentence, and highly contagious.
[Warning: Contagion detected. Proximity breach. Purge sequence advanced. All affected entities tagged for deletion.]
Olek stared at the horrifying, beautiful blight consuming his best friend. The System’s cold pronouncement echoed in the ruined space. He knew the academy’s protocol for such an infection: immediate quarantine, followed by irreversible execution. But he also knew of a hidden, out-of-bounds chamber, a glitched space that existed outside the world’s active rendering, where time itself might stall. A place where Jarek could be suspended, a desperate, impossible save state. But for how long? And at what cost?
