Chapter 1 of 10

The Courier's Gift

1.3k words

The reinforced courier case chafed Rheno Galt’s shoulder, its brass rivets digging into his collarbone. Downtown Oshur shimmered under a mid-morning haze, the polished glass of the Aerocorp Tower reflecting a sky so achingly normal it felt like a lie. Rheno, in his standard issue courier vest, navigated the throng of tech-sector professionals, his destination the penthouse suite of the Grand Exchange. Another anonymous package, another day spent invisible. He adjusted his grip on the heavy, matte-black case, its surface unnervingly cold. The city hummed with the predictable rhythm of ambition and commerce. Then, the hum died. Not faded, but *snapped*. A silence so absolute it felt like a physical blow. Every head in the plaza tilted skyward in unison. Rheno followed suit, his gaze drawn to an abnormal tear above the Aerocorp spire. The cerulean fabric of the heavens was being ripped open, not by thunder, but by something akin to a jagged, basalt claw. Cracks spiderwebbed across the blue, revealing a swirling, inky void behind it, like an eye peering through a fractured lens. Before the screams fully bloomed, the first thing fell. A dark shape dropped, followed by another, and then dozens. They hit the pavement with sickening wet thuds, sending sprays of pulverized concrete into the air. Razor-hounds. Their forms were skeletal and angular, hunched like starved canids, all teeth and sinewy, coal-scaled hides. Their eyes, glowing points of toxic green, fixed on the nearest, most panicked targets. A woman nearby shrieked, a sound abruptly cut short as a hound landed directly on her, a red smear blooming on the polished marble. Panic ignited. Hundreds of terrified bodies surged, catching Rheno in the undertow. He clutched the courier case, instinctively trying to protect its unknown contents, even as a shard of glass from a shattering skybridge grazed his cheek. He stumbled, colliding with a man whose suit jacket felt like silk and whose cologne stung Rheno’s nose. Korin Daxx. The arrogant heir to the Daxx-Nexis conglomerate, famed for his cutting-edge neural implants and even sharper tongue. “Watch it, courier!” Korin snarled, shoving Rheno away. His eyes, usually sharp with dismissive disdain, were now wide with pure terror. He didn’t wait for an apology, didn’t even glance at the chaos erupting behind him. He just wanted *out*. Another razor-hound shrieked, a sound like tearing metal, too close. Korin saw it, a blur of dark plating descending. Without a moment’s hesitation, without a flicker of remorse, he brought his reinforced boot up and slammed it into Rheno’s chest. The impact knocked the wind from Rheno’s lungs, sending him sprawling directly into the path of the incoming creature. The case flew from his grasp, sliding across the blood-slicked ground. “Sacrifice yourself for your betters, drone!” Korin shouted, already scrambling over a toppled food cart, vanishing into the crush of fleeing people. The words echoed in Rheno’s ears, raw and searing, as the razor-hound’s sickly green gaze bore into him. Pain flared from a gash on his arm, but it was the betrayal, sharp and sudden, that clawed at him more fiercely. He was just a body, a shield, to people like Korin Daxx. He scrabbled backward, adrenaline screaming through his veins. His hand brushed against something cold and hard—the delivery box. Its latch, somehow, had sprung open in the fall. Inside, nestled on a bed of dark velvet, was not a data-chip or a legal document, but a blade. Not metal, but vitreous glass, deep black, absorbing all light. It was sleek, with a wicked, serrated edge, and a hilt that seemed to ripple with a faint, internal glow. His fingers closed around it. The hilt pulsed, a cold hum resonating through his palm. A sudden, blinding flash of crimson light erupted from the blade, washing over him. The world around him faded, replaced by a holographic prompt that materialized directly in his line of sight. It was stark, minimalist, and brutal, rendered in a chilling, blood-red text. [MONOLITH INTERFACE ACTIVATED] [DESIGNATION: RHENO GALT] [CLASS: SHADOW-MANCER] [ARMAMENT ACQUIRED: VOID-SHARD BLADE] He didn't understand the words, but a primal, cold certainty settled in his gut. The blade felt like an extension of his own will. The razor-hound, momentarily startled by the flash, gathered itself to pounce. Rheno lunged, a desperate, animalistic cry tearing from his throat. The Void-Shard Blade plunged into the creature's chest, sinking through dense scales as if they were mist. The beast convulsed, its pale green eyes dimming to ash. [RAZOR-HOUND ELIMINATED. ESSENCE ACQUIRED.] Essence. The word felt like a command. He looked at the blade, then at the lifeless husk of the creature. Something shifted, a dark tendril of energy coiling from the hound’s dissolving body, drawn to the blade. It felt… empowering. But it wasn't enough. Not for the rage that still burned, a cold, methodical fire in his veins. Korin Daxx. That arrogant, cowardly face flashed in his mind. The kick. The words. A plan, stark and terrible, solidified. He knew where Korin would have fled—the opulent private subway entrance to the Daxx-Nexis corporate vault, a mere three blocks away. He would be cornered there, waiting for his privileged escape. Dodging panicked civilians and fresh razor-hounds, Rheno moved through the collapsing city. He found Korin huddled beside a shattered security console, frantically trying to reactivate the subway’s automated doors. Korin flinched back against the metal panel as he saw Rheno, the dark blade now gleaming in his hand. “Galt? You… you lived? Get away from me, you freak! I’ll have you terminated!” Korin babbled, fumbling for a hidden pistol. Rheno said nothing. The blade felt surprisingly light, balanced with murderous purpose. He closed the distance instantly, moving with unnatural speed. Korin barely registered the flash of black before the Void-Shard Blade plunged into his chest, precisely where Rheno had been kicked. The wound was clean, yet somehow… consuming. Korin gasped, a choked gurgle escaping his lips. His eyes lost their frantic light, replaced by a vacant stare as he slumped against the console. Rheno watched, dispassionately, as the man’s life drained away. [KORIN DAXX ELIMINATED. ESSENCE ACQUIRED.] [INITIATING SHADOW EXTRACTION PROTOCOL.] The Monolith Interface flared again. A tendril of pure shadow, darker than the deepest night, snaked from Korin’s cooling body. It didn't dissipate; instead, it solidified, coalescing into a grotesque mockery of Korin’s former self. It was taller, broader, its form composed of shifting darkness, but the posture, the broad shoulders, the faint outline of a self-satisfied sneer, were unmistakably Korin. Its pinprick eyes, however, glowed with an alien, obedient light. [SHADOW SOLDIER: KORIN DAXX FORGED.] [COMMAND PROTOCOL: LOYALTY (ABSOLUTE).] It stood behind Rheno, silent, immense, and terrifying. His first soldier. A chilling sense of power, cold and precise, flooded Rheno. He looked at the construct, then back at the ruined city. His revenge was just beginning. Just as the thought formed, the sky convulsed again. The Monolith Interface pulsed with an urgent, blazing red. [WARNING: NULL CONVERGENCE DETECTED.] [INITIATING SECTOR LOCKDOWN: OSHUR.] [WELCOME TO THE SHATTERED SECTORS.] A deafening *CRACK* tore through the air, reverberating through the foundations of the city. Invisible walls, vast and shimmering like heat haze, slammed down across the urban landscape. They sliced through buildings, bisected streets, and trapped entire sections of Oshur in a grid of unseen, impenetrable force. The ground beneath Rheno’s feet vibrated with the immense, sudden shift. The world, already broken, was now carved into brutal, contained zones. The dust of the collapsing city hung thick, obscuring vision. Rheno stood amidst it, a lone figure flanked by the towering, silent shadow of his betrayer. A faint cough, then another, drifted through the haze. A figure stumbled out of the swirling dust, shielding her eyes. Vysa Renn. Her pragmatic gaze stiffened into shock as she dropped her arm, freezing. She saw Rheno, then the monstrous, pitch-black form standing loyally behind him.
