Chapter 5 of 10

The Midpoint Wager

Tariq’s tea cup, a delicate porcelain thing Vazgarok had retrieved from a looted artisan’s shop, clinked against the saucer. The floral bergamot of Earl Grey clashed with scorched ozone and stale iron. He watched the steam curl, a fleeting ghost, before looking at Jalil. Farrah stood rigid beside him, knuckles white around an empty grip. “Suicide,” Tariq repeated, his voice flat. “Or, from a less dramatic angle, the only exit strategy that doesn’t involve us waiting for the next brainwashed fanatic to kick down our door.” He took another slow sip. “You’re telling me there’s a terminal. A way to shut it down. And it’s right next to the thing that vaporizes people.” Jalil’s smile didn't waver. “Precisely. Think of it as a game master’s control panel. The archon needs a stable anchor point for its larger operations. Disrupt that, and the dome, along with any other minor afflictions it’s inflicted upon our humble Ziggurat, will dissipate.” “And you just happen to know this,” Farrah interjected, her voice tight. “After it sealed us in. Convenient.” “My dear Farrah,” Jalil said, a theatrical hand placed over his heart. “I am merely a humble servant. Knowledge, however, is a currency I trade in. And sometimes, one must observe from a… discreet distance, to gather the most valuable coins.” He glanced at Tariq. “So, will you take the wager, Void Sovereign? Or will you continue to dance to the council’s tune within their cage?” Tariq set the cup down. The clink was sharp in the sudden silence. He looked around at the desecrated hydroponic garden, the still forms of Kamran’s guild members strewn like discarded dolls amidst the wilting flora. The image of the multi-eyed seraph, its radiant blades scything through the air, flashed in his mind. He’d barely pulled Farrah out of the way. Fleeing was an option, always had been. It was his default. But even retreat required a direction, an end. And the only end to this cosmic game was severing the strings altogether. He watched the dark ripple at the edges of his vision, the steady hum of his power vibrating in his bones. He was sick of dodging. Sick of avoiding. Tired of this endless, exhausting charade. “Fine,” Tariq said, the word a steel trap closing. “Lead the way, our ever-so-helpful liaison. But if this is a trap, I’m reviving you as a doorstop.” Jalil chuckled, a rich, resonant sound. “My dear Tariq, your wit is only outmatched by your ambition. This way.” They moved through the Ziggurat’s upper levels, the air growing colder, heavier. Corrupted guild members, their faces twisted into unsettling smiles, still patrolled, but Tariq’s thralls, a silent, creeping surge, made short work of them. Vazgarok, still in his frilly apron, moved with surprising grace, a silent, hulking vanguard whose every step shook the polished flooring. They reached a set of massive, ornate doors, glowing with a soft, persistent amber light. Runes carved into the obsidian frame pulsed like sluggish heartbeats. This was it. The sanctum. The heart of the purge. “The terminal is through there,” Jalil whispered, pointing to a smaller console just beyond the threshold, shrouded by a shimmering curtain of light. “And the entity… it will be waiting.” Tariq nodded, the resolve hardening in his gut. This wasn't just about escape anymore. This was about reclaiming his sleep, his life. And if that meant slaughtering a few thousand gods along the way, then so be it. He pushed the heavy doors open. Static prickled his skin across the threshold. The chamber was vast, a cathedral of light and sound. At its center, seated on a throne woven from blinding light, was the multi-eyed seraph. Its countless eyes, each a miniature sun, focused on them. Its wings, shimmering constructs of light, spanned the width of the hall. [WARNING: Proximity to Apex Emissary. Excellent.” Just then, Jalil stepped forward, a wide, almost manic grin splitting his face. He bowed deeply, dramatically, to the enthroned monster. “Illustrious Emissary of the Heavens! I bring you the rebel, Tariq Morad. As promised.” Tariq froze. Farrah gasped, her hand instinctively reaching for her shattered spear, remembering it was gone. Vazgarok rumbled, a low growl of confusion. “Jalil, what is this?” Tariq demanded, his voice low and dangerous, the shadows around him deepening. Jalil straightened, his eyes gleaming with a triumph that felt entirely too genuine. “My dear Tariq, I am a liaison. And a liaison’s primary duty is to facilitate. The cosmos seeks to bind your unique essence. And I, in return for my own… emancipation from service, have delivered you.” He swept an arm towards Tariq. “A soul such as his, untouched by the Wager, untraceable by your systems… a truly unparalleled Ascension Gift for the Pantheon!” The seraph’s eyes narrowed, not at Tariq, but at Jalil. “Your treachery is noted, human. But the gift is acceptable.” It turned its gaze back to Tariq, a blinding brilliance emanating from its core. “Submit, Void Walker. Be cleansed. Be elevated. Join the chorus.” [INITIATING SUPREME ASCENSION PROTOCOL: SOUL REWRITING IMMINENT.] A torrent of pure, unadulterated radiance erupted from the seraph, an incandescent tide surging toward Tariq. It wasn’t a blade, not a blast, but an embrace, meant to overwrite, to consume, to remake his very being into a puppet. Farrah screamed, throwing herself forward, but it was useless. The light hit Tariq. It didn’t burn. It didn’t blast. It *fed*. [VOID NECROMANCY: UNSEALED. His thralls, his loyal legion, pulsed with it. Vazgarok, the hundreds of dark vermin, the phantom bone-dragon, all of them. They began to glow, a faint, ethereal brilliance outlining their obsidian forms. Their empty eye sockets now burned with captured starlight. [VOID NECROMANCY: NEW SUB-CLASS ACQUIRED – ‘GOD-KILLER’.] [SHADOW LEGION: NOW INFUSED WITH ANATHEMIC PROPERTIES AGAINST DIVINE ENTITIES.] The celestial roared, pure disbelief shaking the hall as its supreme Ascension Gift, its ultimate weapon of soul-binding, was not only nullified but *stolen*. Its halo flickered, drawing back like water retreating from an earthquake. Jalil, still standing there, his grin now wider, more genuine, clapped slowly. “Magnificent,” he murmured, a glint of true satisfaction in his eyes. “Precisely as calculated.” Tariq looked at him, then back at the sputtering celestial, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face. “You… you knew this would happen.” “A working hypothesis,” Jalil corrected, his voice practically purring. “The Pantheon’s gifts are insidious. But against true nothingness, against the Void… they are simply fuel. I merely needed a way to deliver the largest possible dose directly into your unique physiology.” He bowed to Tariq. “Now, Void Sovereign, you have the means to sever far more than just a dome.” The creature shrieked, a sound that ripped at the fabric of the sanctum. It was weakening, its luminous form fracturing, unable to withstand the drain of its own force weaponized against it. Tariq’s glowing vermin swarmed, biting, tearing, their newly gilded claws ripping through its diminishing brightness. “You think this changes anything, Void Walker?” the dying creature spat, its voice thin and reedy. Its remaining eyes, barely pinpricks of light, fixed on Farrah. “You merely prolong the inevitable. Your companion… she already accepted the Wager’s embrace, months ago, for her dying sister. Her soul, too, is a ticking clock.” Farrah staggered, pale with dawning horror. Tariq turned toward her, stomach dropping, as the dying entity's laugh dissolved into a final, guttural gurgle.
