Chapter 3 of 10
The Golden Guillotine

Jalil’s words hung in the air, a cold, invisible mist. Tariq watched the liaison straighten, the smooth facade settling back into place like a perfectly tailored suit. Farrah’s spear tip lowered an inch, her gaze not on Jalil, but on Tariq, sharp and appraising.
“Soul-binding traps,” Tariq echoed, a dry, humorless chuckle escaping him. “Naturally. Because a freebie from cosmic deities isn’t suspicious enough on its own. Next you’ll tell me they’re powered by unicorn tears.”
“The tears are merely a binding agent,” Jalil replied, a flicker of his usual playful smirk returning, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Less effective than human anguish, but excellent for aroma.” He gestured with an open palm towards an iridescent archway that had materialized behind him, leading into a brightly lit tunnel. “The fortress awaits. Your VIP suite, as promised. And a robust supply of Earl Grey for your… associate.” He nodded towards Vazgarok, who, still clad in his frilly apron, gave a low, rumbling bow.
Farrah snapped her spear upright, the metal glinting. “We’re not just going to take his word for it, are we?” Her eyes narrowed at Tariq. “You, ‘wild card,’ what’s your plan? A nap? While our souls are being re-formatted into puppets for the Pantheon?”
Tariq sighed, running a hand through his already dishevelled hair. “My plan was indeed a nap. A very long, uninterrupted nap. But if you insist on dragging me into an existential crisis before dawn, fine. What do you suggest, Spear-Maiden? We storm the grand hall and demand a soul-scan from every ‘Ascended’ champion?”
“We observe,” Farrah stated, her voice firm. “Jalil said the gifts overwrite. It’s a process. We find someone who just received one, someone important, and we watch. See what ‘Ascension’ truly means.”
An hour later, Tariq found himself crammed into a ventilation shaft barely wide enough for a scrawny rat, his knee digging into his ribs, the metallic scent of dust and stale air filling his nostrils. Farrah, surprisingly nimble, was a few feet ahead, peering through a grimy vent cover. Vazgarok, thankfully, had been relegated to brewing more tea in Tariq’s new, ridiculously opulent suite, which boasted an entire wall made of reinforced crystal overlooking a thriving internal biome.
“This is undignified,” Tariq grumbled, mostly to himself. “I’m a Shadow Sovereign, not a sewer gnome. I could have just, you know, manifested a shadow-spy.”
“And risk detection?” Farrah whispered back, not turning. “This way, if we’re caught, we’re just two curious idiots who got lost. Minimal system flagging. Keep quiet, Tariq. He’s coming.”
Below them, in the cavernous, gleaming hall of the Sunstone Vanguard guild, stood Kamran Shahin. A man whose name was usually spoken with reverence, now little more than a nervous twitch in his eye. He was the reigning champion of the arena's ‘Apex Gauntlet’ and had received his 'Ascension Gift' just yesterday. The relic itself, a brass wrist-cuff intricately engraved with celestial symbols, now pulsed with a soft, amber light on his forearm.
He paced, running a hand through his meticulously styled hair, occasionally glancing at the massive, arched skylight above. The air in the hall thrummed with a strange energy, like a tuning fork hitting an unheard note.
Suddenly, the light from the skylight intensified, not with the natural glow of the terraced complex’s internal sun, but with something alien and blinding. The air grew heavy, static prickling Tariq’s skin. From the searing white descended a figure, not walking, but coalescing into existence. It was an Avatar of the Pantheon—a multi-eyed celestial warden. Ribbons of auric radiance spun around its form, each one a separate, impossibly long wing. Its head was not a single face, but a shifting mosaic of eyes, some human, some reptilian, some entirely alien, all gazing down at Kamran with an unnerving, benevolent intensity.
The vanguard champion dropped to one knee, trembling, but a forced smile was already stretching his lips.
[DIVINE WAGER: ASCENSION PROCESS INITIATED]
The entity lowered a hand, not touching him, but hovering inches above the gleaming cuff. The light from the cuff flared, enveloping the man in an incandescent cocoon. His body stiffened, a silent scream contorting his face for a split second before the smile returned, wider, fixed, and utterly vacant. His eyes, once sharp and ambitious, glazed over, becoming hollow mirrors reflecting the avatar's yellow glare.
[ASCENSION COMPLETE. HOST: KAMRAN SHAHIN. STATUS: OPTIMAL SERVITOR.]
The words boomed not just in Tariq’s ears, but rattled the vent plate under his elbows. It was worse than he imagined. The shell rose, its movements stiff, almost marionette-like, smile painted on. He wasn’t dead, but whatever made the champion human was gone, replaced by an empty drone.
The entity’s myriad eyes, without moving its head, suddenly swiveled, focusing directly on Tariq and Farrah’s vent. A low, guttural hum vibrated from its form, an abrasive pressure hammering their skulls.
“Intruders. Blight upon the sacred observation.” The voice was a chorus of a thousand whispers, each one resonating with power. “A void-blighted anomaly. And a reckless pawn.”
Luminous bands erupted from the entity, not in a beam, but in razor-sharp ribbons that tore through the reinforced durasteel of the ventilation shaft. Farrah gasped as the metal shrieked and buckled. She threw herself back, spear extended, parrying a ribbon that would have bisected her. The force of the impact sent her slamming into Tariq, knocking the breath from his lungs.
“This was your brilliant plan, genius?” Tariq gasped, struggling for air as Farrah’s rigid back pressed against his chest. Her spear, a blur of motion, met another volley of searing blades, sparks flying.
“It’s not my fault the overgrown hummingbird has psychic detection!” Farrah snarled, her breath ragged. She spun, deflecting another attack that sliced off a chunk of the wall beside them. The entity was fast, impossibly fast, its yellow ribbons weaving a deadly net. Farrah was skilled, but she was fighting a god’s projection, and every deflection sent jarring shocks up her arms.
One ribbon slipped past her guard, arcing towards her side. Tariq, without thinking, hooked an arm around her waist and yanked, pulling her hard against him, tumbling them both into a newly formed crater of twisted metal and pulverized concrete. The luminous blade hissed past where her ribs had been, embedding itself deep into the wall opposite with an explosive shower of sparks.
They landed in a heap, Farrah’s spear clattering, her body pressed tight against Tariq’s, his face inches from her hair, the smell of ozone and fear thick in the air. Her lungs pulled short, sharp gasps, chest heaving against his. The tremor in her limbs rattled against his armor. The sudden, forced intimacy was jarring, even in the face of imminent death. Tariq, ever the master of inappropriate timing, managed a strained, sarcastic whisper. “Well, this is certainly an upgrade from the ventilation shaft. More legroom.”
Farrah didn’t respond, staring hard at the winged entity, which had descended fully into the hall, its gilded form humming with force. It swept its gaze across the floor, ignoring the vacant hollow shell.
“This sanctuary has harbored a soul-defiler. An infection in the heart of our wager.” The warden’s voice boomed, rattling the very foundations of the mega-bunker. “Let the Great Purge commence. The hunt begins.”
[DIVINE WAGER: ZIGGURAT SECURE PROTOCOL INITIATED. ALL EXITS SEALED.]
With a blinding flash, an impenetrable dome of amber radiance erupted from the bunker's highest spires, cascading down to encase the entire perimeter, sealing it from the outside world. The dome pulsed, a suffocating, inescapable cage.
Then, across every transparent surface, every comm-screen, every powered display across the terraces, a single image flickered to life. Tariq’s face, haggard, cynical, framed by the dust and grime of the vent shaft, was broadcast to every brainwashed, 'Ascended' player in the entire city, a yellow reticle glowing on his forehead.
