Chapter 1 of 10
The Bone Dragon Beneath the Bedrock
963 words
The flickering emergency lights in the Oraz subway tunnels were doing their best to mimic a disco strobe, painting Tariq Morad’s sweat-slicked face in strobing amber and black. Each stride sent a fresh throb through his temples, a dull, insistent percussion against the symphony of rattling debris and the ragged wheeze of his own breathing. He just wanted a nap. A real, undisturbed, eight-hour nap. Was that too much to ask from a universe that had decided to turn Earth into a cosmic gladiatorial ring?
Behind him, the high-pitched yelps of the celestial pack grew sharper, closer. They moved like shimmering blurs of pure starlight, leaving scorch marks on the cracked concrete where their paws landed. Indestructible, the System had boomed, a week ago. Untouchable, it had cackled. Tariq, a former night-shift mechanic whose primary combat skill was fixing a busted alternator blindfolded, was neither indestructible nor untouchable. He was just tired.
He skidded to a halt at a collapsed corridor section, a jagged maw of twisted rebar and shattered rockfall. A dead end. The beasts coalesced into a snarling, luminescent pack, their ethereal jaws dripping with what looked suspiciously like stardust. Seven of them. Too many. He fumbled for the rusty wrench he’d been using as a bludgeon, but his arm felt like lead. This was it, then. Eaten by glorified space-chihuahuas. At least it would be quick. And quiet. Finally quiet.
[WARNING: FATAL ENGAGEMENT IMMINENT. PLAYER DISENGAGEMENT PROTOCOLS ACTIVATED.]
“Oh, shut up,” Tariq rasped, leaning against a graffiti-scarred pillar. The glowing predators lunged. His vision constricted, the world narrowing to gleaming teeth and incandescent eyes. An involuntary, desperate surge of something cold and vast, something that felt like the absolute absence of light, roared through his veins. It wasn't a prayer. It was a scream of pure, unadulterated annoyance.
The world *screamed back*. Not the predators, but the bedrock itself. The very ground beneath Tariq's feet convulsed, concrete shattering like sugar glass. An abyss, impossibly deep and ancient, ripped itself free from the very foundations of the world. It wasn't just a shadow; it was the spectral echo of something immense, something truly terrifying, long dead and buried beneath millennia of forgotten earth. A skull, vast as a small car, burst through the ceiling of the passage, followed by a serpentine neck of bone and void-energy. Ribs the size of train carriages tore through the surrounding rock, twisting into a form that was unmistakably draconic. A bone dragon, its form woven from pure, swirling nothingness, rose from the earth's heart.
The celestial beasts, for all their celestial resilience, whimpered. They were light. This was pure, unadulterated *darkness*. The skeletal colossus snaked its neck, its empty eye sockets fixing on the sparkling pack. With a silent, annihilating roar, it swept forward, radiating cosmic cold. The luminescent hunters shrieked, their starlight forms dissolving into wisps of faint smoke, absorbed into the dragon's dark maw as if they were never there. Total obliteration. Not even a trace remained.
Tariq blinked, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten, replaced by a dull ache in his chest. The beast settled, its enormous head resting gently beside him, like a pet cat. The subterranean chamber, now a gaping crater, smelled of ozone and ancient dust.
[CONGRATULATIONS, PLAYER TARIQ MORAD! YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PRIMEVAL ABILITY: VOID NECROMANCY. YOUR FEAT OF SUBDUING THE AETHER HOUNDS AND AWAKENING A PRIMORDIAL SHADOW-BEAST HAS EARNED YOU AN ASCENSION GIFT!]
[ACCEPT YOUR ASCENSION GIFT? (Y/N)]
The system’s booming voice vibrated through the air, accompanied by the shimmering appearance of a small, intricately carved golden sphere, pulsing with a faint, hypnotic light. Tariq stared at it. “A gift?” he muttered, the sarcasm thick enough to chew on. “From the same cosmic jerks who turned my planet into a death trap? Yeah, no thanks.”
[REJECTED?! PLAYER TARIQ MORAD, ARE YOU CERTAIN? THIS IS A DIVINE BLESSING, AN ENTRY TO THE UPPER ECHELONS OF THE DIVINE WAGER!]
“Absolutely certain,” Tariq yawned, leaning back against the dragon’s surprisingly comfortable skull. It felt like cool stone. “Looks like a tracker. Or a soul-overwrite. Either way, it means more work. And I’m really trying to get some sleep here.”
The golden sphere flickered, then vanished. A beat of stunned silence hung in the air, the omnipresent system momentarily flummoxed. It was rare for anyone to refuse. Tariq just wanted to close his eyes.
Just then, the remaining ceiling above him gave way with a thunderous *CRACK*. Dust and rebar rained down as a figure dropped through the new hole, landing with a warrior’s grace amidst the debris. She was a whirlwind of dark hair and furious energy, dressed in scavenged tactical gear, a wicked, gleaming spear clutched in her hands. Farrah Qasimi. Tariq’s ‘fierce rival’, or as he preferred to think of her, ‘the human embodiment of a caffeine addiction’.
Her eyes, dark and sharp, scanned the devastation, then landed on Tariq, who was now reclining against the colossal, shadowy head of a nascent god-monster. Her jaw dropped. Her mission, clearly, had been to ‘save’ him from the celestial pack. Instead, she found him draped across the very thing that had annihilated them.
“Morad,” Farrah breathed, her voice a low growl, her spear tip arcing to point directly at his throat, a glint of polished steel reflecting his weary face. “What… in the name of the Ruined Pantheon… *are* you?”
A slow, deliberate clap echoed from the deeper gloom of the collapsed passage, drawing both their gazes. A man stepped into the ambient glow, impeccably dressed in a silk tunic that seemed far too pristine for the apocalypse. He had a knowing smile and eyes that held too many secrets. Jalil. The Gods’ smooth-talking liaison. “Oh, Tariq,” he purred, his voice like expensive honey. “The Pantheon’s going to *love* this one.”
