Chapter 42: The Golden Cage Closes
500 words
Violet light pulsed across the schoolyard. A deep, resonant voice echoed from the sky, amplified, reaching every corner of the chaotic festival grounds. Dread coiled in Kenji's gut. He recognized the signature. The SSS-Rank Savior. A puppet. A tool of the Paradox Commission.
Lyra tensed beside him. Her gaze fixed upwards, a flicker of hope, then weary resignation, playing across her face. Her breathing hitched, a silent battle waging within her.
Ascending from the swirling purple clouds, a figure descended. He wore brilliant white armor, trimmed with gold, catching the last rays of the dying sun. His cape, a vibrant crimson, billowed like a triumphant flag. Aegis. The 'Hero of Justice'. His smile was too perfect, his eyes too bright.
Kenji’s senses screamed. Every instinct shrieked 'trap'. He felt the subtle pull of hidden surveillance, the careful positioning of ‘rescue’ teams, waiting in the periphery. This wasn't protection. This was an extraction.
Shadows stretched and thinned beneath him. A dozen miniature clones, barely visible, detached from his form, dissolving into the deeper gloom of the building's facade. They fanned out, silent, swift, mapping every blind spot, every potential avenue of escape or attack.
His primary objective: Aegis. Eliminate the threat before he could touch Lyra. This 'hero' was a known asset of the Commission, his mind scrubbed clean, programmed for loyalty. Assassinating him would be a clean strike, a message.
“Citizens, fear not!” Aegis’s voice boomed, projecting authority. “The Hero Association is here. We have contained the immediate threat.” His eyes, unnervingly, locked onto Lyra. “SSS-Rank Lyra, your courage is commendable. But your power draws immense danger.”
Lyra flinched, her shoulders slumping. She glanced at Kenji, a silent plea in her eyes. Protection. Safety for their classmates. That was her unwavering priority. Kenji saw it, the self-sacrificing spark that made her a hero, and made her vulnerable.
Kenji felt a cold knot tighten in his chest. She was considering it. She truly believed this man, this puppet, offered genuine safety. His hand twitched, longing to activate his full power, to tear Aegis apart before he could utter another word of deceit.
“We must ensure your safety,” Aegis continued, his voice smooth as silk. “And by extension, the safety of those around you. We have prepared a secure, isolated facility. It is for your own protection.”
Isolated. Kenji knew what that meant. A golden cage. A place where Lyra’s immense power could be controlled, studied, perhaps even weaponized. A place where she would be cut off from everyone, especially him.
He watched Lyra, her internal struggle clear. Her jaw was set, her fists clenched. She looked towards the panicked students, their faces etched with fear and confusion. Then her gaze returned to Kenji, lingering for a moment, a profound sadness there.
She took a deep breath. Slowly, deliberately, she stepped forward. Away from Kenji. Towards Aegis.
