Chapter 4: A Flash of Silver Telekinesis

Screaming echoed through the polished glass corridors of the academy as the alarm klaxons wailed. High-pitched and relentless, the sound drilled into Kenji’s ears. Red warning lights pulsed against the walls, painting the rushing students in a bloody glow. Chaos had taken over. A low-level villain threat had breached the perimeter, forcing an immediate evacuation of the main building. Amidst the stampede of frightened teenagers, Kenji kept his head down. He moved with a practiced, sluggish stride, mimicking the panic of an ordinary D-rank civilian. Inside, his mind was a cold machine, calculating exit routes and checking the blind spots of the security cameras. Lyra was already gone. She had slipped away minutes ago, likely claiming she needed the restroom. Kenji knew better. She was currently changing into her SSS-Rank superhero suit, preparing to face whatever threat was foolish enough to knock on the academy's front gates. Plaster dust rained down from the ceiling as a massive tremor rattled the structure. The ground rolled violently underfoot. Cracks spiderwebbed across the reinforced concrete walls. Students screamed louder, pushing past one another to reach the main exits. Kenji deliberately veered away from the bottlenecking crowds, choosing the secondary eastern stairwell instead. It was darker, narrower, and almost completely deserted. Heavy footsteps echoed from the upper landings as the building groaned again. Another shockwave tore through the eastern wing. Overhead, a structural support beam snapped with a deafening crack. A massive, five-ton slab of reinforced concrete sheared off from the ceiling, plunging directly toward Kenji’s head. Survival instinct took over. Without thinking, Kenji flared his EX-Rank Shadow Manipulation for a fraction of a millisecond. A dense, localized field of shadow gravity erupted from his boots, preparing to swallow the momentum of the falling debris and crush it into dust before it could touch him. Suddenly, a brilliant silver light flared in the dim stairwell. Frozen in mid-air, the massive concrete slab hovered barely two inches above Kenji’s head. The air hummed with a fierce, crackling kinetic energy. Slowly, the slab rose backward, drifting through the air like a weightless leaf. It slammed quietly into the opposite wall, resting harmlessly against the banister. Footsteps clicked against the concrete steps above him. Immaculate and entirely unbothered by the dust, Eliana Vance stepped out of the shadows. Her long silver hair caught the pulsing red emergency lights, and her silver eyes glowed with a terrifying, luminescent intensity. As the wealthy SSS-Rank heiress of the Vance Corporation, she was a goddess among mortals. Her telekinesis was legendary, a force that could level city blocks on a whim. "You should watch your step, civilian," Eliana said, her voice dripping with a haughty, aristocratic amusement. Kenji forced his shoulders to slump. He widened his eyes, mimicking a terrified, weak-willed student. "Thank you... thank you, Vance-sama. I thought I was dead." Instead of letting him pass, Eliana stepped down the stairs, blocking his path. She raised her hand, and with a flick of her wrist, the heavy steel fire doors at the bottom of the stairwell slammed shut. The magnetic locks engaged with a heavy, metallic thud. Now, they were completely sealed inside the crumbling stairwell. "Do not insult my intelligence," Eliana purred, taking another step closer. Her silver eyes flared brighter, casting sharp, metallic reflections across the damp concrete walls. Kenji’s heart hammered against his ribs. He kept his face completely blank, but his mind was already running through thirty-two different ways to eliminate her if his cover was blown. "I don't know what you mean," Kenji said, keeping his voice slightly tremulous. "A normal D-rank civilian doesn't possess a gravitational signature," Eliana said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. She raised her hand, hovering her fingers inches from his chest. "When that ceiling collapsed, my telekinesis didn't just grab the concrete. It collided with something else. Something dark. Something incredibly heavy." She stepped closer, trapping him against the cold concrete wall. The scent of expensive jasmine perfume mingled with the harsh smell of pulverized stone and ozone. Kenji felt his jaw clench. A vein throbbed at his temple. His paranoia had made him sloppy. He had reacted to the falling concrete instinctively, forgetting that an SSS-Rank telekinetic would easily sense the distortion in the local gravity field. "You are a liar, Kenji," she whispered, her silver eyes scanning his face, searching for a crack in his mask. "I felt your power. It felt like a black hole, pulling at my kinetic threads. Who are you?" Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating. The building trembled again, but neither of them blinked. Kenji’s right hand drifted toward his side. Beneath his skin, his shadow energy began to pool, ready to solidify into a pitch-black blade that could pierce through her telekinetic barrier before she could react. He couldn't let her leave this stairwell alive if she knew his secret. His father's ruthless training echoed in his mind: *A tool of death leaves no witnesses.* His fingers twitched, the shadows under his boots rising like liquid ink, preparing to strike. Before Kenji can summon his shadow blade, Eliana leans in and whispers, 'I know you're not a normal civilian. I can feel your gravity pulling mine. Join my faction, or I reveal your anomalies to the Board.'
