Chapter 39: A Fragile Thread of Silk
1.3k words
A chill settled in Kenji's bones, colder than the subway tunnels. The Supreme Director's voice echoed, a ghost in his memory. Lyra was a target. Not just from rival mercenaries, but from the very organization sworn to protect. Their world was a lie. He had to act. Now.
His mind raced, calculating trajectories, vulnerabilities. Protecting Lyra directly meant revealing his hand, exposing his EX-Rank power. That was not an option. Not yet. He needed a proxy, a shield.
Only one person possessed the resources, the power, and crucially, the lack of direct affiliation with the Paradox Commission's inner circle that he could trust, even marginally. Selene. Her private security firm was renowned, discreet, and expensive.
Accessing his private servers, Kenji initiated the process. Encrypted layers peeled back, revealing a maze of offshore accounts, shell corporations, and untraceable digital currencies. This was the fruit of years of high-stakes contracts, bounties accumulated and hidden from the world.
He crafted the persona with meticulous detail. A worried, anonymous benefactor. Someone with insider knowledge, but too afraid to step into the light. The payment was astronomical, enough to raise eyebrows, too much to ignore.
Lyra's daily routine, her routes, her known associates – all compiled into a discreet dossier. He marked potential threats, weaknesses in existing security, the kind of details only a professional, or someone intimately familiar with the underworld, would notice.
Sending the data packet through a series of ghost servers, Kenji watched the transaction clear. Millions funneled into Selene’s corporate accounts, designated for 'Project Nightingale'. An untraceable, one-time payment for comprehensive, discrete protection of a specific, unnamed individual.
His jaw tightened. This was a dangerous play. Selene was intelligent, perceptive, and dangerously powerful. She wouldn't just accept a blank check without questions. His anonymity was a fragile shield.
---
Days later, the tension coiled in Kenji's gut. He noticed the subtle changes. A new, unfamiliar sedan parked near Lyra’s bus stop. Faces in the crowd that were just a little too watchful. Selene’s firm had taken the bait.
He exhaled slowly. Lyra was safer. For now. But the cost of that safety was already materializing.
Footsteps echoed in the empty classroom. The bell had long since rung, students had scattered. Kenji had lingered, pretending to finish an assignment, anticipating this moment. He felt her presence before she even spoke.
“Kenji.”
Her voice was silk over steel. He didn’t turn immediately. He kept his head down, feigning concentration on the textbook in front of him. A calculated delay. He needed to appear vulnerable, not defiant.
“Yes, Selene?” His voice was even, betraying none of the internal tremors. His shadows rippled faintly beneath his skin, ready to lash out, ready to dissipate, ready to defend.
Without warning, a sudden, crushing pressure slammed into his back. His breath hitched. He was pinned, his chest against the cold chalkboard, an invisible hand holding him fast. Telekinetic force. Potent. Precise. Selene wasn't playing.
“You’re a high school student, Kenji. A quiet one, at that,” Selene's voice was low, dangerous, right beside his ear. Her scent, a mix of expensive perfume and ozone, filled his senses. “So tell me, how does a quiet high school student have access to a Swiss bank account linked to the notorious 'Crimson Veil' syndicate?”
His heart hammered. Crimson Veil. They were a mid-tier mercenary group, known for their ruthlessness but not their intellect. Perfect. He had to play this carefully, making it seem like a lucky, terrifying break rather than a calculated maneuver by an EX-Rank heir.
“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Kenji feigned confusion, a tremor in his voice. He pushed against the invisible wall, just enough to show resistance, not enough to challenge her power.
“Don’t lie to me, Kenji.” Her grip tightened. He felt the air thin around him. “My firm received a multi-million dollar anonymous contract to protect Lyra. The funds traced back, not directly to you, but to a series of accounts that, with a bit of digging, are undeniably connected to the Crimson Veil. And then, I cross-referenced the unique, high-level threat assessment in the dossier with known informants. Guess whose name popped up in a few secure databases? A young man, approximately your age, with a history of family ties to low-level syndicate operations, who vanished two years ago.”
She wasn't stupid. Kenji knew that. This was a master manipulator at work, not a simple brute. He needed to give her a piece of the truth, just enough to satisfy, just enough to distract from the greater lie.
“Alright!” Kenji gasped, letting his resistance crumble. He let his head drop, pressing his forehead against the cool slate. “Alright, you caught me.” He spoke quickly, injecting fear and desperation into his tone. “My family… they were small-time. Crimson Veil absorbed them. I got out. Ran.”
“Ran? With multi-millions in a Swiss account?” Selene’s tone was skeptical. The pressure didn't ease.
“It wasn’t mine! Not really.” Kenji swallowed hard, forcing himself to sound genuinely terrified. “When the Veil absorbed us, I… I saw an opportunity. They were sloppy. I copied some data, access codes. Their offshore accounts.” He paused, letting the implication hang. “They wouldn’t notice a few million missing. Not until much later.”
“So you stole from a mercenary syndicate and then ran?”
“Yes! What else was I supposed to do? Stay and become another one of them? A killer?” He let a hint of genuine disgust color his voice. “I just wanted a normal life. That money… it was my escape. My way out.”
“And Lyra?” Selene’s voice softened, but her grip remained firm. It was a calculated shift, designed to pull more information from him. “Why hire my firm, anonymously, using stolen syndicate money, to protect her?”
“She… she’s my friend.” Kenji’s voice dropped, raw with a fabricated vulnerability. He knew this would resonate with Selene’s own protectiveness over her allies. “I overheard things. Whispers. She’s in danger. Deep danger. From them.”
“From Crimson Veil?”
“No. Not just them.” Kenji shook his head against the chalkboard, the movement limited by her telekinetic hold. “Bigger. The people who control the Veil. The ones who hire them. I can’t… I can’t say more. If they knew I knew, if they knew I was still alive, I’d be dead.”
He painted a picture of a terrified informant, living on borrowed time, desperate to protect the only person he cared about without drawing attention to himself. He made himself small, powerless. Exposed.
“I couldn’t go to the heroes,” Kenji continued, his voice barely a whisper. “They’re… compromised. I saw it. So I thought of you. Your firm is independent. And you’re strong. You could protect her without asking too many questions.” He hoped the flattery would land.
Selene was silent for a long moment. The pressure on his back eased, just slightly, enough for him to take a deeper breath, but not enough to escape. He felt her eyes on him, probing, analyzing. He had to maintain the act, hold the fragile thread of his lie.
“You’re telling me you’re a runaway informant, who stole millions from a mercenary syndicate, and you’re using that money to discreetly protect your childhood friend because you believe the greater authorities are compromised?” Her voice was flat, devoid of emotion, making it impossible to read her.
“That’s… that’s exactly it,” Kenji said, forcing a shiver through his body. “Please, Selene. Just protect her. I don’t care about the money. Just keep her safe. I can’t lose her.” He let his voice crack, injecting a desperate plea.
Silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. Kenji felt her telekinetic energy shift, a subtle hum in the air around him. He braced himself, ready for her to see through him, ready for the true confrontation.
Then, the pressure vanished completely. He stumbled forward, catching himself on the desk. He turned, slowly, to face her. Selene stood there, arms crossed, her expression unreadable.
Her eyes glowed with intense telekinetic energy as she whispered, “I don’t care about your money, Kenji, but if you lie to me again, I’ll pull the truth directly out of your brain.”
