Chapter 23: The Crimson Stage
1.7k words
Blood dripped steadily from Kenji’s fingertips, painting small crimson spots onto the pristine white marble of the grand ballroom entrance. Every breath felt like hot glass scraping against the lining of his lungs, a brutal reminder of the massive shadow illusion he had just maintained to stop the city-wide bomb. His vision blurred at the edges, a heavy haze threatening to drag him into unconsciousness, but he forced his eyes to focus on the stage ahead.
Gilded archways and crystal decor mocked the violence unfolding beneath them. Music had stopped minutes ago, leaving only the tense, heavy silence of a trap snapping shut. Kenji leaned against a heavy marble pillar, his hand pressed firmly against his ribs to hold back the warmth of fresh blood soaking through his shirt. Every twitch of his muscles sent a sharp jolt of agony through his torso, but he refused to let his knees buckle.
Across the glittering hall, three high-tier heroes stood shoulder-to-shoulder, their postures rigid and aggressive. Weapons hummed with lethal energy, pointed directly at the center of the floor where a single figure stood cornered. The crowd of elite socialites had retreated to the edges of the room, their expensive silk dresses and tailored suits rustling as they whispered in hushed, terrified tones.
Standing beside Vance was a flame-user named Ignis, his hands already ablaze with a violent orange fire that cast long, grotesque shapes against the walls. To his left, a gravity-manipulator hummed with kinetic energy, her eyes locked onto Lyra like a predator tracking its prey. They weren't here to arrest her; they were here to execute her before she could expose the rotting core of their organization.
Lyra backed away slowly, her boots dragging against the polished floor. Pale blue lightning crackled weakly around her knuckles, but the sparks were erratic, reflecting the sheer panic in her wide eyes. She looked small beneath the towering crystal chandeliers, stripped of the confident aura she usually carried as an SSS-Rank superhero.
"Drop your defenses immediately, Lyra," commanded Commander Vance, his voice booming through the silent room. Metallic plates floated around his shoulders, spinning like saw blades, ready to slice through flesh at a moment's notice. "You have been officially designated as a high-threat traitor to the Hero Association."
Anger flared deep in Kenji’s chest, overriding the agonizing pain in his broken ribs. His jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles in his cheek twitched violently, and his hands balled into tight fists. He knew exactly what this was—a setup, a ruthless cleanup operation by the very people who claimed to protect the world.
They were going to execute her right here, in front of high society, to make an example of her.
Taking a deep, agonizing breath, Kenji gathered the remnants of his energy. He couldn't let them touch her. He didn't care about keeping his identity hidden anymore, nor did he care about his own failing body.
Summoning his EX-Rank Shadow Manipulation required a deep draw from his depleted reserves, causing his veins to burn as if filled with liquid fire. He ignored the sensation, forcing the darkness beneath the floorboards to erupt upward. It didn't just block the light; it devoured it, a thick, heavy blanket of absolute blackness that expanded outward in a silent shockwave. Screams of terror echoed off the high ceilings as the wealthy guests scrambled blindly, knocking over champagne towers and heavy mahogany tables in their panic.
Light died instantly. The brilliant glow of the chandeliers vanished, swallowed by an unnatural, suffocating blackness that blinded every hero in the room. It wasn't just a lack of light; it was a physical weight that pressed against their chests, dampening sound and throwing everyone into absolute sensory deprivation.
Screams of confusion and panic erupted through the dark. Vance’s metal blades flew blindly, clattering uselessly against the stone pillars as the heroes lost all sense of direction.
Moving with the lethal efficiency of his clan training, Kenji lunged through the darkness. He memorized Lyra’s position before the lights went out, navigating the pitch-black void with absolute ease.
His hand wrapped tightly around her wrist.
Dragging her through the narrow maintenance corridor felt like dragging an anchor. Her lightning was a wild, untamed beast, leaping from her skin to scorch the concrete walls and singe the hem of his jacket. She was fighting him, her instincts screaming that he was another enemy trying to drag her into the dark.
Sliding through the heavy metal door, he shut it behind them, cutting off the chaotic noise of the ballroom.

Red warning lights began to pulse along the ceiling of the maintenance corridor, casting a rhythmic, bloody glow over their faces. Klaxons wailed in the distance, a muffled, metallic shrieking that signaled a total lockdown of the facility.
Dust motes danced in the dim, flickering light of a single emergency bulb in the narrow concrete hallway.
Lyra ripped her wrist out of his grip, spinning around with her back pressed hard against the cold concrete wall. Her chest heaved violently, and her SSS-Rank lightning flared with a dangerous, unpredictable intensity, illuminating the grime-covered corridor in harsh blue flashes.
Ozone filled the tight corridor, the sharp, metallic smell of her lightning biting at Kenji's nostrils. Her eyes, normally a bright, confident sky-blue, were wide with a frantic, animalistic panic that broke his heart.
"Stay back!" she cried, her voice cracking with a mixture of terror and confusion. Her eyes darted from his bleeding face to the shadows swirling around his boots. "Who are you? What did you just do?"
Kenji leaned heavily against the opposite wall, his shoulder sliding down the rough concrete as his legs threatened to give out. He pressed a hand against his ribs, feeling the uneven grind of broken bone beneath his shirt.
"It’s me, Lyra," he whispered, his voice dropping to a gravelly, exhausted tone. "Calm down. You're safe."
Staring at the flickering blue light, Kenji saw the absolute betrayal in her eyes. It was a look he knew too well—the moment a person realizes the world they believed in is nothing but a carefully constructed lie. His own childhood had been a series of such realizations, each one chipping away at his humanity until only the weapon remained. He didn't want that for Lyra, but the world was cruel, and the Paradox Commission was crueler.
Paranoia, his oldest and most faithful companion, screamed at him to run, to leave her behind and disappear into the safety of the city's dark underbelly. He had been taught that attachments were a weakness, a direct path to a shallow grave. Yet, looking at her trembling form, he knew he would rather burn the entire city to the ground than let them lay a single finger on her.
That look of raw, unadulterated fear on her face pierced through his usual emotional detachment, sparking an intense desire to protect her at all costs.
Tears finally spilled over her eyelashes, tracing clean paths through the dust on her cheeks. "Why did they do that? Vance... he's one of my mentors. They said I committed treason. They had their weapons drawn to kill me, Kenji!"
Because you found out about the mercenary attacks, " he said, his eyes locking onto hers with intense gravity. "You started digging into the connection between the Hero Association and the mercenary guilds. You wanted to know who was funding the proxy wars."
She froze, her breath hitching in her throat. "How do you know that? I only told a few people in the intelligence division..."
Those people work for the Paradox Commission," Kenji explained, his voice cold and flat. "They are the ones orchestrating everything. They control both sides—the heroes and the mercenaries. By looking for the truth, you put a target on your back."
Horror washed over her features, draining the remaining color from her face. She shook her head in denial, her hands trembling as she clutched her head. "No... that can't be true. The Association is meant to protect people. We are the shield against the dark."
Rotten to the core, Lyra," Kenji said, taking a step toward her. His heart hammered against his ribs, a heavy, painful rhythm. He hated seeing her like this, her entire worldview shattered in a single night.
They decided to eliminate you because you're a liability," he continued, his tone softening slightly as he looked at his childhood friend. "They are forcing you into the same corner they put me in. To them, we are just pieces on a board, and you just became a threat to the game."
My mentors... Vance was the one who trained me when I first got my license," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackle of her lightning. "He told me we were the light of this city. He told me we were making a difference."
He lied," Kenji replied simply. "He was just keeping you on a leash. The moment you slipped that leash to look for the truth about the mercenary attacks, you became a target."
I just wanted to do what was right," she whispered, her shoulders slumping as she slid down the wall to a crouch. Her fingers tangled in her hair, her body shaking with silent, ragged sobs. "I trusted them."
Kenji knelt in front of her, ignoring the sharp spike of pain in his side. He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, feeling the tremor running through her entire frame.
I know," he said softly. "But you can't trust them anymore. The only way we survive this is if we stick together."
Lyra looked up, her tear-stained face reflecting a desperate need for answers. "Who are you really, Kenji? Those shadows... that wasn't normal. You're not just a quiet classmate."
Before he could answer, the air in the narrow hallway grew suffocatingly heavy. The temperature plunged instantly, and the concrete floor began to vibrate with a high-frequency hum.
A wall of silver energy slams down between them as Eliana teleports in, her face pale with panic as she shouts, "We have to go! The Commission has declared martial law!"
