Chapter 19: A Dance Floor of Hidden Daggers

Engines roared in the quiet subterranean garage, a low, predatory growl that vibrated through the soles of Kenji's shoes.
Eliana smoothed down the fabric of her emerald gown, her fingers trembling slightly against the silk. Her father’s threats still hung in the air like a poisonous mist, but they had a part to play. Beside her, Kenji adjusted the cuffs of his dark suit, the fabric stiff and smelling of expensive dry cleaning.
He remembered the heavy pressure of her father's gaze just minutes ago. The man had threatened to dismantle everything Eliana held dear if they failed to project the image of a united front tonight. To Kenji, it was just another transaction in a lifetime of lethal negotiations, but Eliana was visibly unraveling.
Cold air rushed past as the sleek limousine glided out into the neon-drenched streets of the metropolis. They rode in silence, the tension between them thick enough to cut with a blade. Every window they passed reflected a boy who looked like a prince, but beneath the fine threads, Kenji's shadow squirmed, eager for blood.
He could feel the darkness coiling around his ankles, reacting to his elevated heart rate. His training as the heir to the most notorious mercenary clan had taught him to suppress all emotion, yet the sheer absurdity of his situation tasted like copper on his tongue.
Here he was, dressed in a suit that cost more than most people earned in a year, acting as a shield for an SSS-Rank heiress, while his childhood friend was out there playing the hero. It was a delicate house of cards, and any gust of wind could bring it crashing down.
---
Flashing lights blinded the senses as they pulled up to the grand entrance of the gilded estate. Guards in ceremonial armor stood at attention, their eyes scanning the crowd with military precision. Sensing the raw energy radiating from the guests, Kenji kept his hands buried deep in my pockets.
Power hummed in the air, a suffocating mixture of SSS-Rank signatures and old money. Eliana looped her arm through his, her grip tight enough to bruise. Her telekinetic energy flared briefly, a subtle vibration against his skin that only he could detect.
"Smile," she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the chatter of the paparazzi. "They are watching us. My father has eyes everywhere tonight, and so does the Association."
Kenji forced his mouth into a polite, empty curve. Inside, the grand ballroom opened up like a gilded cage. Crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting sharp, brilliant light over the sea of guests.
Men in tailored tuxedos and women in glittering gowns drank champagne from flutes, laughing at jokes that carried no warmth. Behind those smiles lay daggers, poison rings, and calculated betrayals. This was the playground of the elite, where heroes and villains shook hands before stabbing each other in the dark.
Walking through the crowd felt like navigating a minefield. To Kenji's left, a prominent member of the Hero Association laughed loudly, his chest puffed out. His aura was a sickly sweet gold, hiding a core of rot.
On his right, a mercenary broker clad in midnight blue sipped his drink, eyes darting toward the exits. He was evaluating the structural integrity of the walls, planning his escape route in case the delicate peace shattered.
Everyone here had a price, and everyone was looking for an advantage. Kenji's shadows stretched lazily along the marble floor, whispering secrets they gathered from the feet of the unsuspecting. They told him of hidden weapons, concealed wire-taps, and racing heartbeats.
They whispered of a poison-tipped hairpin worn by a duchess, and a miniature disruptor device hidden in the pocket of a corporate executive. He absorbed the information, cataloging it for future use. Knowledge was the only currency that truly mattered in his line of work.
Eliana pulled him toward a group of wealthy donors, her smile turning dazzling and fake. She spoke with effortless grace, introducing Kenji as a quiet companion from a respectable family. Kenji played the part of the mute, docile partner, nodding when appropriate while his mind mapped the entire room.
Three snipers were positioned on the upper balconies, their heartbeats steady and rhythmic. Four exits were heavily guarded by S-Rank combatants pretending to be waiters. Danger saturated every corner of this beautiful trap.
Myriad thoughts raced through Kenji's mind as he analyzed the tactical layout. He could neutralize the snipers in three seconds using shadow spikes, but escaping the ballroom with Eliana would be a different matter entirely.
---
Suddenly, Kenji's breath hitched. A spike of familiar, electric energy registered on his sensory radar, sharp and unmistakable.
Turning his head slowly, he scanned the far side of the ballroom. His gaze cut through the crowd of laughing socialites, ignoring the glittering jewels and expensive fabrics.
Standing near a massive ice sculpture was Lyra.
She looked absolutely breathtaking, wearing a deep midnight-blue gown that flowed like water to her ankles. Her golden hair was pinned up, exposing the elegant curve of her neck. Yet, her posture was stiff, her shoulders tense enough to snap.
She looked entirely out of her element, a warrior forced into a doll's clothing. Beside her stood a towering figure dressed in the white-and-gold dress uniform of the Hero Association.
Commander Vance.
He was a high-ranking SSS-Rank powerhouse, known for his ruthless pacification campaigns. His hand rested heavily on the small of Lyra's back, a gesture that looked more like captivity than companionship.
Anger, cold and sharp, coiled in the pit of Kenji's stomach. Watching them, he felt his shadow ripple beneath his feet, eager to rise and tear.
Lyra kept her chin up, but her eyes dangled around the room like a trapped animal. She was looking for an escape, a familiar face, anything to anchor herself in this sea of sharks.
Vance leaned down, his lips brushing close to her ear as he whispered something. Color drained from Lyra's face instantly.
Her knuckles turned white as she clenched her hands into fists at her sides. Subtle, blue-white sparks of lightning crackled across her fingers, barely visible to the untrained eye.
She was suppressing her immense power, struggling to keep from blasting him through the reinforced glass windows. Kenji could see the tremor in her jaw, the way her collarbones strained against the fabric of her gown.
Kenji's jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. A vein throbbed at his temple as he took a half-step forward.
Nobody threatened her.
Nobody made her look that terrified.
Even if she was destined to be his enemy, she was his best friend first. Eliana noticed his sudden shift in posture, her grip tightening on his arm.
"Kenji, what is it?" she whispered, her telekinetic energy buzzing in warning. "Your energy is spiking. People are going to notice. Control it."
Kenji ignored her, his focus locked entirely on Vance's hand resting on Lyra. Shadows began to pool around his leather shoes, darkening the white marble.
The darkness crawled outward, seeking the commander's shadow, ready to merge and drag him into the abyss. Kenji was ready to unleash hell, to summon a clone to slit Vance's throat in the crowd before anyone could blink.
His breath came in shallow, controlled spurts. Every instinct honed by his family's brutal conditioning told him to eliminate the threat. His eyes locked onto the pulse point on Vance's neck, calculating the exact angle required to pierce it.
One step forward.
Another.
Before Kenji can move toward her, a high-ranking mercenary leader taps him on the shoulder, whispering, 'The patriarch wishes to see you in the study. Now.'
