Chapter 14: The Silver Heiress's Ultimatum
1.2k words
Plaster dust drifted through the fractured air of the living room, coating the shattered remnants of the wooden coffee table. Heavy, suffocating silence settled over the ruins of what used to be a quiet suburban home.
Standing amidst the debris, Eliana locked her sharp, icy gaze onto Lyra, her eyes cutting through the gloom with absolute certainty.
Lyra took a ragged step back, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edge of a broken sofa for support. Static electricity hissed weakly across her skin, a faint reminder of her SSS-Rank lightning power.
"You're her," Eliana whispered, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel.
Quietly, Kenji shifted his weight, his boots crunching on broken glass as he moved to intercept the heiress's gaze.
Shadows pooled around his ankles, writhing like a nest of disturbed vipers as his EX-Rank energy responded to his rising heart rate.
"Step back, Eliana," Kenji warned, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous vibration that made the dust on the floor vibrate.
Lightning flickered weakly around Lyra's fingertips, but she gasped, her energy clearly depleted from the brutal fight she had just endured.
Dark tendrils rose from Kenji's feet, wrapping around his legs and crawling up his torso like living armor.
"Are you threatening me, Kenji?" Eliana asked, her voice tilting with a dangerous mix of amusement and disbelief.
Instantly, Kenji blurred, reappearing directly in front of Lyra, completely blocking her from Eliana's line of sight.
Black, liquid darkness erupted from his shadow, rising in towering blades that vibrated with high-frequency killing intent.
"I won't ask a second time," Kenji muttered, his pupils dilating until his eyes were almost entirely black.
Bitter disappointment flashed across Eliana's pristine features, her telekinetic aura flaring in a brief, brilliant blue spark before she suppressed it.
"After everything, this is how you treat me?" she asked, her voice cracking slightly with a raw emotion she tried to hide.
Freezing air rolled off Kenji's shadows, dropping the room's temperature so rapidly that thin layers of frost coated the broken window glass.
Lyra reached out, her hand trembling as she touched Kenji's shoulder. "Kenji, don't... she's too powerful."
Ignoring her warning, Kenji kept his eyes locked on the silver-haired heiress, his muscles coiled to strike if she made a single move.
"You think you can kill me to keep her little secret safe?" Eliana laughed, a hollow, bitter sound that echoed off the cracked walls.
Tears of frustration welled in her eyes, though she quickly blinked them away, hardening her expression into stone.
"I came here to help you, you idiot," Eliana hissed, her telekinetic grip suddenly tightening on a piece of floating concrete debris.
Dust swirled around her as she levitated several inches off the ground, her power projecting a sheer force of will.
"You're both targets now," Eliana pointed out, her tone shifting from hurt to cold, calculating pragmatism.
"Paradox Commission agents won't stop with a few mercenary grunts," she added, her eyes narrowing at Kenji.
Kenji did not lower his guard, the dark energy surrounding him pulsing in tandem with his steady, silent breathing.
"Why do you care?" Kenji demanded, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
"Because I actually give a damn about what happens to you, even if you are a paranoid monster," Eliana spat back.
Wind began to howl through the shattered window frames, whipped up by the sheer pressure of their competing auric fields.
Lyra looked between them, her breathing shallow as she struggled to comprehend the depth of Kenji's dark power.
"Kenji... your shadow," Lyra whispered, her voice laced with a mixture of awe and dawning terror.
"Focus on staying upright, Lyra," Kenji said without looking back, his focus entirely consumed by the threat in front of him.
Eliana crossed her arms, her silver eyes scanning the defensive posture Kenji had assumed.
"Look at yourself," Eliana scoffed, gesturing to the dark blades floating around Kenji's shoulders.
"You're ready to slaughter an ally just to protect an SSS-Rank hero who doesn't even know your real name," she mocked.
Pain sliced through Lyra's expression, her eyes widening as she looked at Kenji's back.
"Ally?" Kenji repeated, his voice dripping with venom.
"You're an heiress with a habit of poking your nose where it doesn't belong," he countered.
Eliana shook her head, her silver hair shimmering in the dimming afternoon light.
"My family has resources that can make this entire mess disappear," Eliana explained, her voice regaining its usual aristocratic confidence.
"But I don't offer my charity to people who try to slit my throat," she added coldly.
Silence fell over the room again, heavier this time, weighed down by the leverage Eliana now clearly held.
Kenji knew she was right, a bitter pill that tasted like ash in his mouth.
If Eliana wanted them dead or exposed, she could have simply telepathically broadcasted their location to the Hero Association.
Instead, she was standing here, taking his threats and offering a way out.
"What do you want, Eliana?" Kenji asked, his shadow blades lowering slightly, though the dark energy still swirled around his boots.
Eliana smiled, a sharp, victory-tinged smirk that didn't quite reach her eyes.
"I want cooperation," Eliana stated flatly, pointing a manicured finger toward the floor.
"You both come with me to my family's private estate," she demanded.
"It's equipped with SSS-Rank dampening fields that block all external scanning and tracking signals," she continued.
"You will stay there, under my supervision, until we figure out who in the Paradox Commission authorized this hit," she concluded.
Lyra stepped forward, her legs shaking but her resolve hardening.
"We can't just run away with you," Lyra protested, her voice carrying the natural authority of a top-tier hero.
"I have responsibilities... the city needs to know what happened here," she argued.
Eliana let out a dry, dismissive chuckle.
"City officials think you're on a routine patrol, Lyra," Eliana pointed out.
"If they find you here, surrounded by mercenary bodies and dark energy, your career is over," she warned.
Kenji turned his head slightly, his dark gaze catching Lyra's frantic expression.
"She's right, Lyra," Kenji muttered, his voice quiet but firm.
"We're exposed here, and my shadows can only cover up so much of this destruction," he admitted.
Lyra bit her lower lip, her hands clenching into fists as she realized the trap they were in.
Every instinct Kenji possessed screamed at him to run, to take Lyra and vanish into the dark underbelly of the city.
Carrying an injured SSS-Rank hero while being hunted by both mercenaries and heroes was a death sentence.
Eliana's offer was a gilded cage, but it was currently the only cage with thick enough walls to protect them.
"Fine," Kenji spat, the shadows around his feet sinking back into the floorboards with a soft, liquid hiss.
"We go to your estate, but if you try anything, Eliana, I will end you before your telekinesis can blink," he threatened.
Eliana's smirk faded, replaced by a solemn, almost melancholy nod.
"Deal," Eliana murmured, her hand dropping to her side as she lowered herself back to the floor.
---
Suddenly, high-pitched wails of sirens broke the uneasy quiet, echoing from several blocks away.
Red and blue lights began to dance across the cracked plaster of the ceiling, growing brighter by the second.
Kenji's heart hammered against his ribs as he recognized the specific frequency of the sirens.
These weren't standard police cruisers.
A fleet of black Hero Association tactical vehicles rounds the corner, their sirens wailing and searchlights sweeping the street.
