Chapter 1: Rain and Reckoning

1.2k words

Rain lashed against the heavy glass pane, threatening to crack the old wooden frame of the cabin. Water droplets raced down the glass like tears, blurring the dark, wild forest outside. Shivering, Heiran pulled the damp wool blanket tighter around her shoulders. Her boots were soaked through, her socks clinging to her cold toes with an icy bite. Across the small, dimly lit room, Abdurrahman stood as rigid as carved stone. Firelight flickered across his sharp jawline, carving his features out of the surrounding darkness. Anger rolled off him in waves. He kept his back turned to her, staring down into the dying embers of the hearth as if he could reignite them with his gaze alone. "You shouldn't have come," he said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper that barely carried over the howling wind. "I had no choice," she retorted, her chin lifting despite the violent tremor in her limbs. "You left me no choice when you vanished into the mountains without a word." Slowly, he turned around. His chest rose and fell with heavy, controlled breaths, the fabric of his dark shirt straining against his broad chest. His eyes, dark and stormy as the sky outside, locked onto hers with a burning intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. "I left to protect you," he muttered, taking a slow step forward. "But you always did have a habit of running straight into danger." "Maybe you are the danger," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Silence stretched between them, thick and heavy, suffocating the small space. The smell of damp pine and woodsmoke filled the air, mingling with the sharp scent of his expensive cologne. Heiran clutched the blanket tighter, wishing it could shield her from the heat of his gaze. Every muscle in his body was coiled tense, like a predator deciding whether to strike or let its prey go. Step by step, he closed the distance between them. The wooden floorboards groaned under his weight, a slow, rhythmic warning that she ignored. "If you truly believed that," Abdurrahman said, his voice dropping a register, "you would have run the moment you saw my car in the driveway." "I wanted answers," she insisted, though her voice lacked its earlier strength. "I deserved that much from you." Standing directly in front of her now, he towered over her small frame. The sheer physical presence of him was overwhelming, casting a long shadow that swallowed her whole. He reached out, his large, calloused hand hovering near her face for a agonizing second before his fingers gently caught a wet strand of hair clinging to her cheek. Warmth flooded her at his touch. It was a stark contrast to the freezing chill of the storm, a sudden shock of electricity that made her gasp. "Answers?" he murmured, his thumb brushing lightly against her cheekbone. "You want to know why I walked away?" Heiran nodded, unable to find her voice. Her throat felt dry, her senses completely filled by him—the heat radiating from his skin, the dark intensity in his eyes. "Because being near you makes me lose control," he admitted, his jaw clenching as his gaze dropped to her parted lips. His hand slid down to her jaw, his grip firm but incredibly gentle. He tilted her head back, forcing her to look directly into the storm swirling in his eyes. "Every second I spend with you," he whispered, his thumb tracing the curve of her lower lip, "is a test of my sanity." Her breath hitched. The raw honesty in his confession stripped away her defenses, leaving her completely exposed to him. "Then stop testing yourself," she whispered back, her hands rising to rest against his solid chest, feeling the rapid, heavy thud of his heart. --- Outside, a crack of thunder shook the very foundations of the cabin. The lights flickered once, twice, and then died, plunging the room into near-total darkness. Only the faint, dying glow of the fireplace remained, casting a deep amber light over their faces. Abdurrahman didn't flinch. His focus remained entirely on her, his dark eyes locked onto hers in the shadows. "Do you have any idea what you're asking for?" he growled, his voice thick with a dangerous promise. "I know exactly what I want," she said, her voice steady for the first time tonight. His fingers tightened slightly on her jaw. He leaned in closer, his breath warm against her lips, teasing her with a proximity that was pure torture. "If I don't stop now," he warned, his chest pressing against hers, "there is no going back. I won't let you run from me again." "I'm not running," she whispered, her fingers curling into his shirt, pulling him closer. For a fraction of a second, Abdurrahman hesitated, his restraint holding by a single, fraying thread. Then, with a low growl that vibrated deep in his chest, Abdurrahman leaned down and kissed Heiran.
