Chapter 5 of 10

Shattered Illusions

It was taller than a man, its segmented body contorting with unnatural flexibility, each of its six razor-sharp limbs ending in wickedly curved talons. A thin mist of emerald acid dripped from its mandibles, hissing as it corroded the metal below. Its head, a featureless dome of hardened shell, swiveled, two pinprick red optical sensors locking onto Renshu. [WARNING: BIOWEAPON CLASSIFICATION – VEYR-STALKER. ACIDIC EXCRESIONS. EXTREME AGGRESSION.] Sova stumbled back, a choked gasp caught in her throat. The beast reeked of ozone and scorched bile, radiating primordial hunger. “Renshu, move!” she shrieked, fumbling for the EMP pistol still clutched in her numb fingers, but it felt impossibly heavy, useless against this… *thing*. The organism did not hesitate. With a guttural shriek that scraped against the eardrums, it coiled and sprang, a blur of chitin and claw. Its primary attack was a devastating lunge, aiming to impale Renshu on its forward talons, a liquid spray of acid already arcing from its mandibles. Renshu, however, remained rooted. He watched its approach with the same mild annoyance he might reserve for a particularly persistent insect. “Another phantom beast, crafted with greater detail,” he murmured, almost to himself. “Still, it lacks the true essence of a spiritual sentinel.” As the predator closed the distance, Renshu’s right hand whipped forward in a blur shimmering with faint internal light. His index and middle fingers, hardened by decades of qi cultivation, shot out. He didn’t deflect, didn’t parry. Instead, with surgical precision, he struck. One finger jabbed into a tiny, almost invisible crevice at the base of the creature’s uppermost left limb joint, a place where chitin met a softer, pulsing membrane. The second finger found a similar weakness behind its dome-like head, just beneath the optical sensors. The chitinous horror froze mid-air. Its lunge arrested, its body rigid. The acidic spray from its mandibles faltered, dripping harmlessly to the ground directly below it. It hung there, suspended in an agonizing stasis, every muscle locked, every joint paralyzed. A faint, almost inaudible hum emanated from Renshu’s fingertips, a resonance of internal qi that had instantly disrupted the organism's synthetic meridians, locking it into stillness. Sova stared. The impossible scrapper had just neutralized a bio-weapon designed for corporate sector sweeps. It was like watching someone dismantle a supercomputer with a single, elegant touch. Yet the suspended carcass still dripped. The emerald acid, no longer sprayed, gathered in thick, viscous blobs along its paralyzed form. One particularly large glob, loosened by the sudden shock, detached and fell. It wasn't the rusted tracks it landed on, nor the surrounding debris. Hidden in a deep recess behind a collapsed support pillar, a group of figures huddled, barely visible in the gloom. They were small, thin shapes, their eyes wide with terror, too afraid to move, too afraid to even breathe. Slum orphans, seeking refuge in the forgotten corners of the megacity. The glob of acid struck one of them. A young girl, no older than eight, with matted hair and tattered clothes. It landed on her outstretched arm, a sizzling, corrosive splash against her bare skin. A thin wisp of smoke immediately rose. A scream, raw and visceral, tore through the dank tunnel. It was neither the engineered screech of the apex predator nor the digitized howls from the Gauntlet's pits. This was pure, unadulterated agony. The kind that clawed its way from deep within a fragile, living being. The kind that couldn’t be faked, couldn’t be dismissed as a holographic trick or a trick of qi. It was real. The sound ripped through Renshu’s cultivated indifference like a plasma bolt through paper. His head snapped towards the source of the shriek. His pupils shrank to needlepoints, stripping away his detached amusement. He saw the child, writhing, her small arm already blistering, her screams tearing at the oppressive silence that followed. He saw the genuine horror on the faces of the other children, their desperate, silent pleas. [WARNING: COLLATERAL DAMAGE. TARGET: UNARMED CIVILIAN.] The red flash in his AR was meaningless. What mattered was the searing green of the acid on pale skin, the terrible, echoing sound of suffering. This was not a trial. This was not a grandmaster’s elaborate test. This was pain. Real pain. Inflicted by his own reckless detachment, his casual dismissal of what he assumed was a dreamscape. A flicker of something ancient, something long-buried beneath layers of cynicism, ignited in Renshu’s gaze. The sarcastic boredom vanished, replaced by a terrifying intensity. His expression, usually a mask of weary amusement, hardened into stone. He moved without conscious thought, a blur that transcended speed, appearing beside the girl in an instant. Sova, who had been frozen by the sight of the burning child, watched in horrified fascination. Renshu knelt, his qi-infused hands hovering over the girl’s arm. A soft, warm glow, like liquid moonlight, emanated from his palms. The acid, still sizzling on her skin, seemed to recoil, to evaporate under the gentle light. The raw, angry red of the burn began to fade, the blisters receding as if time were reversing. The child’s screams subsided into whimpers, then soft, tearful gasps. In moments, the skin was whole again, smooth and unblemished, as if it had never been touched by fire. Renshu rose, his face a mask of cold fury. His aura, once merely a ripple of power, now surged, a chilling tempest of suppressed rage. He looked at the paralyzed quad-blade beast, then at the healed child, then at his own hands. They were stained with a faint, iridescent green – the residue of the bio-weapon’s acid, a stark, tangible reminder of what he had almost ignored. “They are not illusions,” Renshu said, his voice a low, dangerous growl that resonated through the tunnel. His eyes, fixed on the paralyzed monstrosity, burned with an infernal light. “Which means… Vipera’s blood will actually spill.”
