Chapter 10 of 10
Severing the Chrome
922 words
A high-pitched, metallic whine ripped through the penthouse, vibrating through Renshu’s bones. The mechanical leviathan’s cracked plating flared with a sickly green radiance, expanding with unstable force. Vance hammered on the sealed hatch, a desperate, animalistic sound. His face, bruised and distorted by terror, turned towards Renshu. “You maniac! You’ll blow us all to scrap!”
“Nonsense,” Renshu retorted, his voice calm, yet carrying an edge of absolute authority that cut through the cacophony. He turned to Sova, who stood frozen by her console, her face pale, the screen a dizzying mosaic of red alerts. “Child, those gravity dampeners. Can you adjust them? I need a specific resonance, a counter-frequency.”
Sova stared, her pupils dilated with the reflected light of the dying beast. “Gravity dampeners? To… counter a nuclear fission reaction? Are you insane? That’s not how physics works!”
“Physics is but a crude shadow of the true Dao,” Renshu scoffed, already moving. He strode towards the teetering automaton, the alloy saber clutched in his grip vibrating in rhythm. “I need to anchor myself against the void. A specific oscillation. Match the beast’s dying thrum, amplify it, then reverse the polarity at exactly three point seven seconds.”
Sova’s mind reeled. It was gibberish, yet his conviction was a physical force. She hammered her knuckles against the light-projected interface, inputting emergency overrides. The system fought her, blaring warnings of catastrophic structural failure. “Three point seven seconds from… now?!” she screamed, overriding safety protocols with reckless abandon.
“Now,” Renshu confirmed, his stance shifting. The vibro-blade rose, not in an attack, but in a measured alignment with the beast’s exposed chassis. His gaze remained fixed, calculating the micro-fractures in the deck plates. A pale, luminous vapor bled from his pores, clinging to the edge of the steel. Internal qi circulated along his meridians, settling into the metal.

[DETONATION SEQUENCE: 3.0… 2.9… 2.8…]
Vance was a screaming mess, abandoning the hatch, scrambling towards a distant maintenance vent. He wouldn’t make it. The hum intensified, distorting the very air, making Sova’s teeth ache.
Renshu closed his eyes. “Severing the Chrome,” he whispered, a title for the technique he was about to unleash. He poured everything into the blade – his life-force, his mastery, centuries of cultivated internal energy. The amber shimmer tracing the steel flared and stabilized, matching the core's virulent glow in precise harmonic resonance.
[2.0… 1.9… 1.8…]
The steel edge, built to shear plating, shrieked under the thermal surge. Micro-fractures spiderwebbed across its surface. The hum of the blade became a shriek. “Gravity dampeners synchronized!” Sova yelled, her voice raw, as the floor beneath them vibrated with a dizzying, sickening rhythm.
[1.0… 0.9… 0.8…]
Renshu stepped into the blast radius. With a sharp rupture, the metal shattered into gray powder, swept away by the thermal updraft. In its place, an extension of amber qi materialized along his grip, dense and razor-sharp. He cleaved downward in a measured stroke, parting the pressurized air above the construct's reactor.
[DETONATION INITIATED. REACTIVE CATASTROPHE IMMINENT—]
A jade surge detonated from the ruptured chamber. But Renshu’s qi blade, a golden line of impossible purity, met it at its apex. The explosion, instead of expanding outwards, seemed to hesitate, to be caught, then was cleanly bisected. One half surged towards the heavens, a brilliant, contained pillar of light. The other half was drawn downwards, into the reinforced substructure of the penthouse, absorbed and dissipated. There was no concussive shockwave, no devastating inferno, only an awe-inspiring, silent display of pure light.
Across the night sky of Xin-Luo, emerald and amber static cascaded across the neon billboards. Below, in the ruined penthouse, Vance lay weeping amidst the debris, his face buried in his hands, muttering about impossible sorcery. The heavy blast doors hissed open. Towering mecha-enforcers, bearing the crest of the World Enforcers, stomped into the room. Their energy cannons hummed, locking onto Vance. He offered no resistance.
“Let’s go, child,” Renshu said, his voice now hoarse, tired. The luminous vapor dispersed, leaving the tang of scorched copper in the air. He glanced at Sova, his expression impassive. “These spirits… they are more stubborn than I imagined.”
They returned to the Neon Gauntlet, not as fugitives, but as silent observers of the aftermath. Renshu had saved the slums, the city. Weeks later, in a refurbished, surprisingly clean old warehouse in the Undercroft, Renshu stood before a group of the same slum orphans he had once dismissed as spiritual projections. They mimicked his stances with ragged balance. He taught them the most basic forms, the foundational movements of the Azure Stream discipline. He even showed them how to recognize pressure points on broken-down automaton parts.
Sova, now openly working as a network security specialist – and Renshu’s self-appointed dojo manager – watched from a corner, a soft smile on her lips. She had traded her corporate salary for a life among the 'disposable dregs,' and found a strange, fierce loyalty blossoming within her.
Renshu swept the polished floor with a traditional bamboo broom, a quiet satisfaction in his movements. The neon glow from a cracked skylight painted stripes across his stern face. His AR interface, which he still viewed as a conduit to the Dao, suddenly pinged. A new message. Not a bounty. Not a system alert. This time, the transmission displayed an unfamiliar military cipher.
