Chapter 1 of 10

Dao of the Rusting Pipe

928 words

The roar of the crowd in the Neon Gauntlet was a physical wall of sound, vibrating through the ferrocrete floor and rattling the teeth of the spectators pressed against the security netting. Neon glyphs stuttered across the arena’s massive holo-screens, displaying probabilities and projected damage outputs, all overwhelmingly stacked against the lone, threadbare figure in the center. “Praetor-Gamma to terminate!” a synthesized voice blared from hidden speakers, echoing the crowd’s bloodlust. The hulking cyborg gladiator, a monstrosity of chrome plating and piston-driven limbs, flexed its bicep-mounted superheated slag-cannon. The weapon hummed to life, a searing blue sphere blooming in its muzzle, bathing the grime-slicked floor in an unnatural glow. The machine's single cyclopean optic fixed on Gao Renshu, a target so pathetic it barely registered as a threat. Renshu, however, merely adjusted the grip on his weapon – a section of corroded plumbing pipe, salvaged from a collapsed vent shaft. Its pitted surface was cool beneath his calloused palm. He didn’t bother with a fighting stance. He just stood there, a ghost in tattered synth-leather, the ionized bolt surging towards him. The air shrieked as molten fire streaked across the arena. It was meant to vaporize, to atomize, to leave nothing but a charred crater where Renshu had stood. But as it neared, Renshu moved. Not with speed, but with an impossible, almost languid precision. He didn't block. He deflected. The rusted pipe, swung with the casual grace of a master calligrapher, met the ionized ball not head-on, but at a tangent, redirecting its annihilating force with a whisper of resistance. The molten charge screamed past him, an azure comet streaking towards the construct's right shoulder. It struck with a deafening *CRUMP*, disintegrating a thick slab of reinforced plating and sending the cyborg gladiator staggering back, a shower of sparking conduits and superheated shrapnel exploding into the air. Silence. Then, a collective, disbelieving gasp from the crowd. The behemoth, its shoulder smoking and hydraulics hissing, looked at Renshu, its singular optic stuttering with what could only be interpreted as confusion. The humiliation was absolute. High above the arena, in a private hacker nest shielded by a shimmer-wall of static, Sova Lin watched the feed. Her fingers, adorned with data-jack implants, danced across a translucent console. “Impossible,” she murmured, her voice tight. She’d seen hundreds of these fights. She’d even engineered some of the outcomes. But this… this was an anomaly. Her initial scan, run on Renshu as soon as he’d entered the pit, had flagged him as ‘Disposable Dreg – Low Threat.’ Now, she reran it, overriding the arena’s internal obfuscation protocols. Her display hitched, then resolved. She magnified the feed. The data that populated her screen defied every known law of modern bio-mechanics. Every combatant in the Gauntlet was augmented, chipped, or outright replaced with cybernetics. It was the only way to survive. But Renshu’s schematic was horrifyingly, exquisitely… empty. [Subject: Gao Renshu] [Cybernetic Augmentations: NONE] [Neural Implants: NONE] [Skeletal Reinforcement: NONE] [Musculature Enhancements: NONE] [Subdermal Plating: NONE] Her usually calm hands twitched, nearly knocking over a synth-caffeine dispenser. Zero cybernetics. Flesh and blood. He had deflected a plasma cannon with a rusted pipe using *muscle*. Ice settled behind her ribs. The Vipera Conglomerate had ordered her to monitor the Gauntlet for ‘unusual combatants,’ outliers that might indicate a new underground bio-weapon or a competitor’s experimental tech. But this wasn’t tech. This was… ancient. Down in the pit, Renshu yawned, a small, genuine stretch that seemed to mock the stunned silence. He glanced at his retinal display, a shimmering overlay only he could see, a constant companion since he'd woken in this absurd new era. Red icons, blinking urgently, hovered over his view of the arena. He dismissed them as 'spiritual illusions' or 'Dao temptations,' the chaotic emanations of this new, fake world. A green numerical tally, floating near the corner of his vision, read: [+300 Dao Merits]. He grunted in brief satisfaction. More merits for cleansing the illusion. His gaze drifted past the still-smoking Praetor-Gamma, past the gawking crowd, to the towering corporate banners that adorned the arena’s upper ring. Most were garish advertisements for synth-meat or advanced life-support systems. But one, emblazoned on a massive, rippling holo-banner, caught his eye. A coiled viper, its fangs dripping stylized venom, rising from a stylized lotus. The symbol of the Vipera Conglomerate. Renshu’s casual posture evaporated. A stillness descended on him, cold and absolute. The symbol. It was subtly different, more intricate, modernized, but the core design was unmistakable. The emblem of the Xuan-Viper Sect. The very sect that had betrayed him, plunged a hundred blades into his back, and left him to die beneath the withered Plum Blossom tree millennia ago. In her high-tech nest, Sova watched him. She saw the shift, the sudden, profound change in his demeanor. Unease hardened her throat. He was no mere brawler. He was something else entirely. The implications for Vipera, for *her*, were catastrophic. Her fingers flew across her console, overriding the arena's comms scramblers, targeting Renshu's subcutaneous audio receiver. “You! The one with the pipe!” she hissed, her voice distorted, amplified, and raw with urgency. “Run! Get out of there! You have no idea what you’ve stumbled into!” Renshu didn’t flinch. His eyes, now devoid of their usual cynical detachment, were fixed on the neon viper symbol. A slow, chilling smirk spread across his face, a predator recognizing its prey. “So,” he muttered, his voice barely audible even to himself, the sound of ancient ice cracking, “the traitorous dogs have built a new temple. Time to burn it down.”
