Chapter 7 of 10
The Chasm's Maw
869 words
The red beams pulsed, searing the damp air with an acrid tang. Joravar felt their heat, a phantom pressure on his sternum, promising instant annihilation. His gaze cut to Cynere, to the colossal fallen deity beside her, and finally to Suren, who stared at the converging light with parted lips.
“Forward!” Joravar shouted through the klaxon. “Vanguard, breach the line! Cynere, rear guard. Suren, keep the children in the mechanized wake.”
The revived god bellowed with synthetic glee and drove a hydraulic gauntlet through the brickwork. Stone and rebar shrieked, collapsing inward, revealing the broken streetscape of Oshkadar beyond. The warmachine surged through the opening, miniature scout quadrupeds skittering ahead to shred hanging power cables and rebar.
Cynere moved like a dark current, her newly mended wings a blur of dark chromesteel, sweeping the rear for any lurking threats. The orphans, wide-eyed and silent, clustered behind Suren, who, despite his shock, moved with an instinctual efficiency, guiding them along the furrowed tread-marks.
Joravar was last, a single glance back at the ravaged chapel. The red beams continued to pierce the roof, tracking his every move, a constant, glowing threat. The array sat deep within the core, and ninety-eight percent was ticking toward impact.
They sprinted through the skeletal remains of what was once the city’s financial district. Towering edifices, now skeletal frames, leaned precariously. The ground beneath them was a mosaic of ruptured pipelines and cracked duracrete.
Then the System spoke.
[PERFECTION TRIAL INITIATED: GRID 7.9. ANY DEVIATION FROM OPTIMAL PATHING WILL INCUR GRAVITIC PUNISHMENT.]
[PERFECTION TRIAL: MISSTEP DETECTED. LOCALIZED GRAVITY-CRUSH INITIATED.]
Fifty paces ahead, the pavement folded into powdered gravel. A colossal impact crater appeared instantly, deep and fresh. The air popped with the force of it. The vanguard stalled for a microsecond, twin focal lenses refocusing on the subsidence.
“No hesitation!” Joravar yelled, his eyes scanning the projected paths that flickered only for him in the corners of his vision. He saw the cold, brutal logic of his past self's blueprints, overlaid onto the chaotic present. “Three strides right, then cut through the fallen gantry! Cynere, flank left, herd the civilians clear of the shear plane!”
His commands were absolute, each word a surgically precise instruction for movement, timing, and positioning. Suren tracked the erratic route, observing how Joravar skirted fractures seconds before they appeared. He saw the subtle shifts in the ground, the faint shimmer in the air that preceded a crush-zone. Joravar wasn't just reacting; he was predicting, anticipating the System’s every brutal move.
[PERFECTION TRIAL: OPTIMAL PATHING MAINTAINED. INITIATING PHASE TWO.]
The air thickened, growing heavy. The pressure built, pushing down from above, making every stride a struggle. It was like running through deep water, but the resistance was ethereal, crushing. The red beams from the Glassing Cannon above remained fixed on Joravar, unwavering.
Another series of tremors, more pronounced this time. The street ahead rippled. Three massive gravitational distortions materialized, a triumvirate of collapsing space directly in the vanguard's path. The vanguard stood centered in the widest rift.
“Master, I will break the field!” the construct bellowed through an external speaker, firing auxiliary thrusters to ram the anomaly and shield the runners behind him.
“No!” Joravar’s voice ripped through the air, desperate. Joravar sprinted, throwing his boots into the shattered asphalt and cutting directly in front of the plated giant. He shoved against the warmachine's chestplate, attempting to lever the tonnage aside.
The field dropped like a slab of iron. Joravar's ribs cracked under the sudden G-spike, air blasting from his mouth as the downward pull smashed him flat against the chassis.
The war-machine lurched backward, chassis telemetry scrolling across glowing lenses in a frantic yellow diagnostic cascade. He had never witnessed such a thing. A master, a god, willingly throwing himself into oblivion to protect a minion? It defied every logical and brutal principle of warfare he had ever known. A new, terrifying awe bloomed within his core processors.
Suren skidded to a halt, watching Joravar pin himself beneath the localized field to deflect the vector from his own construct. This wasn't strategy; it was madness. It was a level of self-sacrifice, of *loyalty*, that Suren had never conceived. To discard oneself for an automaton made no strategic sense, yet Joravar took the structural damage without a word of retreat.
Joravar dragged himself up, spitting red onto the cracked street. He ignored the System notification for a Critical Health Event. “Move,” he rasped. “The Maw is behind this partition.”
They burst through a final curtain of smoke and dust, into a cavernous, subterranean space. This was it. The central nexus of the orbital weapon's alignment system. At its heart, a colossal mechanism hummed, bathed in a sickly green light. It was intricate, alien, and utterly lethal.
Joravar dragged his boots across the grating, crimson markers still burning against his torn jacket. His fingers, trembling, reached out to interface with the core.
[TARGETING ARRAY CORE: IDENTITY LOCK ACTIVE.]
[TO UNLOCK: BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION REQUIRED.]
[ALTERNATE VERIFICATION: MEMORY SELECTION PROTOCOL.]
[SELECT AND PERMANENTLY DELETE: ‘PARAMEDIC MEMORY STACKS’ (EMPATHY SUB-ROUTINES, COMPASSION ALGORITHMS, HEALING PROTOCOLS).]
[CONFIRM DELETION TO VERIFY TYRANT IDENTITY AND UNLOCK CORE. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN IMMINENT GLASSING AND ERADICATION OF ALL PRESENT.]
