Chapter 2 of 10
The Ruthless Paramedic
852 words
The klaxons shrieked, a raw, mechanical scream that vibrated through Joravar’s bones. Sixty seconds remained before the concrete beneath them ruptured into a gravitational sinkhole. He knelt beside the stranger, a young woman whose leg was twisted at an unnatural angle, blood welling from a deep laceration on her scalp. Her whimpers were barely audible over the roaring countdown.
“Name?” Joravar’s voice was calm, a paramedic’s practiced cadence, despite the cold sweat beading on his temples. His gaze shifted between the black prism Cynere held, the bleeding casualty, and the stuttering leaderboard suspended above the towers.
“A… Arentha,” she gasped, staring past his shoulder at the bloody firmament.
[Integration Matrix: Grid Collapse imminent. Objective: Evacuate current sector. Penalty for non-compliance: Subsumption.]
His past self’s cadence sliced through his skull, razor-thin and venomous. *Override. Examine core. Harvest bio-data. Prioritize assets.* Joravar ignored the latter part, for now. His hand, calloused from years of rescues, moved with practiced efficiency. He ripped a strip from his own uniform, clean and sterile, and applied pressure to Arentha’s scalp wound. His fingers, guided by instinct, probed her leg, assessing the break with clinical detachment.
“It’s a clean fracture,” he murmured, more to himself than to her. “I can stabilize it.”
[Integration Matrix: Processing medical intervention. Required: Recipient Bio-Signature for resource allocation. Payment: 1x Bio-Data Scan.]
“Payment?” Joravar muttered. A triage bill in an active strike zone violated every tenet of his training, but the prompt remained immovable. A small, metallic probe extended from his wrist-mounted interface, humming faintly. He hesitated, then pressed it gently against Arentha’s temple. She flinched, biting down on her lip.
[Integration Matrix: Bio-Data Scan complete. Arentha, Human (Terra-Origin). Medical records: Clear. Resources allocated: Basic Medkit (Digital Blueprint).] A luminous schematic formed before him, mapping instructions to bind a field splint from nearby rebar.
Simultaneously, his other hand reached for the obsidian shard Cynere presented. It thrummed with a low vibration, spitting hairline fractures of violet radiation. His past self’s voice was back, clearer now, a torrent of data flooding his consciousness. *Core of a ‘Vultyr-Hound’ unit. Basic patrol designation. Unique integration potential. Analyze the wave-pattern.* Through the prism, he perceived the structural layout of the entire borough laid out like an anatomical chart.
“Thirty seconds,” the interface broadcast, the voice snapping like shearing aluminum.
Joravar’s eyes narrowed. He looked up, his gaze sweeping the ruined alley. A scavenger dropped soundlessly from a heap of pulverised brickwork. His face was a mask of calculated opportunism, his hand already gripping the hilt of a scavenged, serrated blade. He moved with a predator’s silent grace, aiming for Joravar’s back.
“Toss the prize, medic,” the intruder hissed, knife angled upward. “The automaton, too.”
He lunged. Joravar didn't even flinch. He had already seen the movement, felt the subtle shift in the air. Cynere, a blur of shadow and chrome, intercepted Suren mid-strike. Her mono-blade, a sliver of compressed darkness, appeared in her hand, stopping barely a millimeter from Suren’s jugular. The metallic tang of ozone filled the air. The man went rigid, his blade dropping into the dust.
“My vanguard is not salvage,” Joravar said, keeping his voice dead and measured. “Nor are my assets. This ward is dropping into the abyss. Run if you intend to breathe.”
The scavenger's eyes darted between Cynere’s edge and Joravar’s shoulder. Joravar paid him no further mind, already setting his hands back onto Arentha's leg. Suren drew back a step, reading the gesture not as neglect, but as absolute disdain.
[Integration Matrix: Ten seconds to grid subsumption.]
“Right,” the man rasped, scooping his hilt from the rubble. “See you in the next sector, doc.” He melted back across the trench.
Joravar lashed the rebar against Arentha’s tibia using torn cotton strips. He then turned his full attention to the Vultyr-Hound core. The raw data flowed, overwhelming his paramedic mind, but his past self’s consciousness acted as a filter, translating, interpreting, guiding.
The crystalline organ housed construction algorithms for ‘Cascading Resonance Towers’—spires built to fracture municipal sectors into harvestable slag. Every pylon required hundreds of living conduits burned to ash.
*The ancient design: Trigger the spires, crush the populace into organic fuel, and power the central foundry to forge an undying host.*
Bile rose into the back of Joravar’s throat. He was a paramedic. His oath was to save, not to sacrifice. The design demanded slaughter. His past conscience snarled beneath his skull: *Execute the sequence. Hesitation alerts the watchers. Detection ends your world.*
He locked his teeth. He would convert the spires into kinetic bulkheads, twisting Xylos's calculations into shields.
[Integration Matrix: Grid 4 – ‘Veridian Expanse’ – initiating collapse sequence. Predicted complete subsumption in T-Minus 10 minutes. Optimal escape vector: Northwest quadrant, Sector Gamma. Tyrant Protocol 7.3.1 initiated.]
Ten minutes. Arentha shivered, blood soaking through the makeshift bind. The northwest vector led straight to the target zone, but the telemetry feed pinged a cluster of faint life-signs huddled inside an impact cellar three streets south. He had ten minutes to decide: take the safe transit corridor, or sprint into the rupture to dig them out before the sky fell.
