Inside the hollow chamber, the colossal Rift Leviathan rumbled, sending tremors through the bedrock beneath Vadim's boots. Vadim tracked the distant flare arcing across the cracked dome above. Zoya dragged herself onto one elbow, skin chalk-pale as she tracked the trajectory. Borys flattened himself against the rubble. “That’s a Cleanser warhead. Tactical payload. Rostova is wiping the whole district.”
The Epitaph Interface burned fresh runes into Vadim's vision, chiseled with granite finality. A legion of one hundred thousand thralls, and every single husk was about to take the brunt of an orbital-grade detonation.
“Mirela!” Vadim barked, spitting grit. “Raise the phalanx. Wall them off.”
Mirela dipped her chin, pitch-black irises fixed on the ceiling. Her hands rose, not in prayer, but in a gesture of inverted benediction. From the crevices of the subterranean vault, bone-white figures mobilized. Every corpse dragged into his reserve surged upward. They tore free from the packed slate, clattering shoulder to shoulder. Each frame locked ranks under his will.
A tide of yellowed ribs and rusted iron converged around Zoya and Borys. Mirela ascended above the vanguard, hands cast outward as anti-light bled from her fingers. The ranks raised fractured gauntlets, feeding the inverted siphon. An obsidian aegis knit together overhead, thick as vault plating.
The warhead breached the Spire's apex, turbines shrieking at terminal velocity. The atmosphere compressed into a suffocating draft. Borys buried his face in broken concrete. Zoya dug her fingernails into the shale, watching black ichor weave into a defensive lattice over her skull.
Then, impact.
An unimaginable force tore through the Spire. The ground bucked and roared. The sound was not a bang, but a sustained, deafening *tear* in reality itself. The dark lattice flared violet under the blast. The soul-link snapped taut, driving phantom spikes through Vadim’s marrow.

The runes flickered in rapid bursts, each notification striking like a sledge. His vision went gray. A single feedback shock was a needle prick; multiplied across tens of thousands, it shredded his nerves.
Through watering vision, he watched the outermost perimeter turn to powder. No splintered marrow remained—only ash swept away by the thermal wave. Mirela groaned as the dark barrier warped inward, pulling life-force from the collapsing phalanx.

Vadim roared into the concussive roar, blood bubbling from his nostrils, ears, and tearducts. His molars splintered under the clench. He was weathering high-yield ordnance through living fuel, each severed tether shearing away a fragment of his sanity. His liver and lungs ruptured, then stitched back together in wet, agonizing snaps as the corpse-flesh reformed.

The dome contracted to five meters wide, dense as iron. Mirela’s silhouette frayed into vapor under the thermal backwash. The thermal wave scorched the air inside the perimeter. Borys sobbed openly. Zoya watched his torso buckle, blood soaking the front of his shroud.

Then, silence. A ringing, terrifying, absolute silence.

The barrier cracked and vanished, leaving Mirela pitching forward onto her knees. Zoya and Borys coughed through the sudden vacuum; the pit around them was vitrified basalt and glowing fallout. Vadim stood, bleeding profusely, his body wracked, but still upright. His face was a mask of utter exhaustion, his eyes hollow. His army. Gone. Every single one of them.
He hauled his chin up, drawing scorched air into his throat, and took in the blast pit. The Spire was a broken tooth, a gaping wound in the earth. A crater three kilometers across smoldered beneath the gray dawn, lit by residual plasma.
And from the sky, a new storm descended. A swarm of black dots, growing larger, resolving into heavily armed personnel drop-pods. They spewed figures in exosuits, mechs bristling with weaponry, descending into the heart of the crater. Their lights pierced the gloom, locking onto the figures below.
One pod, larger than the rest, landed with a thud, its hatch hissing open. Guildmaster Kaelan Rostova stepped out, his face etched with a triumphant, sneering grin. He wore a reinforced combat suit, a heavy pulse rifle slung over his shoulder. Behind him, dozens of Hunter mechs took defensive positions, their targeting lasers painting crimson dots across Vadim, Zoya, and Borys.
Kaelan’s voice boomed through the comms, distorted by the suit’s speaker, but dripping with contempt. “Well, well, well. The mighty Gravewalker. Still standing. Barely.” He took a slow, deliberate step forward, surveying the devastation. “I expected a charred stain. But you’re nothing but a bleeding mess now. Your little parlor tricks exhausted, I see.” He laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “Go on, necromancer. Call your hordes. Amuse me.”
