Chapter 4 of 10
Inverted Light

Vadim’s vision swam. The crushing backlash from his evaporated thralls was a physical blow, slamming him to the floor. His lungs burned, scraping like dry sandpaper. Mirela, a silhouette of dark power, loomed over him, her arm already arcing downward. The air crackled with a morbid light, the kind that ate flesh and bone with equal hunger.
“Hey! Catch!” A panicked shriek sliced through the air. A glint of foil, a tangle of wires. Borys, face smeared with grime, launched himself from behind a scorched pillar of rubble, hurling a cobbled-together orb. It spun end over end, a crude sphere of scavenged batteries taped to a foil ball, just as Mirela’s attack reached its apex.
It detonated with a blinding, crackling flash. Not a boom, but a sharp, searing pop that reverberated in Vadim’s teeth. White-hot light, amplified by the foil, erupted into the gloom. Mirela froze, a guttural snarl tearing from her throat. Her hand, poised to strike, wavered, violet eyes squeezed shut, a bright afterimage of the flash burned onto Vadim's retinas.
[WARNING: Sensory Overload – Threat Blinded. Duration: 3.0 seconds.]
Three seconds. That was it. Vadim clawed his way to his feet, ignoring the screaming pain in his sternum. “Dragos! Full charge! Decapitate!” His voice was a raw croak, but the order was absolute.
The towering Death Knight, still locked in a defensive stance against the fading blast from Mirela’s initial assault, didn’t hesitate. A surge of shadow flared around Dragos. His colossal executioner's blade, its edge shimmering with condensed darkness, hummed with destructive intent. The floor fractured as Dragos launched himself forward, a cannonball of bone and fury, directly at the temporarily blinded woman.
Mirela roared, a sound of pure, unadulterated rage, her senses returning an instant too late. She threw up an arm, a defensive reflex, but Dragos was already there. The wide blade swept, a devastating dark arc against the fading flash. It cleaved through the air, through Mirela’s upraised arm, and then, with a crunch, through her neck.
Her head flew, a cascade of dark light, before impacting the scarred wall with a wet splat. Mirela’s body, headless, stood for an improbable moment, bathed in the diminishing dark luminescence of her own power. Then, with a shudder, it exploded. A silent, violent implosion of twisted light and fragmented shadows, leaving only a lingering scent of ozone and something akin to scorched lilies.
[ELITE BOSS: ‘Mirela, Corrupted Saintess of the Argent Sepulchre’ – Eliminated.]
[SOUL ACQUIRED: Mirela, Corrupted Saintess.]
At the same instant, a devastating blow ripped through Vadim. Dragos, his blade still humming from the force of the strike, stood motionless. Then, the black vapor that bound him flickered, wavered, and died. His skeletal form fractured, the massive steel clattering against the floor as his body disintegrated into fine dust that swirled briefly before settling.
[DAMAGE SHARE: Champion Dragos – Destroyed. Backlash: Catastrophic.]
Vadim cried out, a guttural sound torn from his throat. The psychic recoil was beyond anything he’d experienced, a thousand tiny hammers pulverizing his bones, his spirit tearing at the seams. He felt the critical breach, the gaping hole in his soul-link, the razor’s edge of obliteration. His vision blurred, darkening at the edges. He was dying, truly dying, for the first time in this new body.
“Vadim! Do something!” Borys shrieked, his voice raw with terror. “She’s gone! He’s gone! We’re *gone*!”
Through the haze of agony, one thought burned. He had to absorb her. Now. Before his body failed. Before the interface locked him out. He slammed his will into the Epitaph, forcing the order through the tearing pain.
“Absorb… Mirela!”
[COMMAND RECEIVED: Absorb Soul – Mirela, Corrupted Saintess.]
[PROCESSING…]
His head felt like it would burst, a screaming void where Dragos’s presence had been. Then, a sudden, blinding flash of purple light erupted from the spot where Mirela had fallen, twisting into an ethereal vortex. It swirled, coalesced, and then condensed into a single, glowing motes of dark light that pulsed with malevolent grace. It shot towards Vadim, slamming into his chest.
[SOUL INTEGRATED: Mirela, Corrupted Saintess. New Champion Acquired.]
A jolt of cold, alien power surged through Vadim. His fractured senses knit back together. The critical breach sealed. The phantom agony, though still a dull throb, receded from the brink of lethality. He felt a new presence, sharp and cold, a chilling echo of dark light, bind itself to his will.
The purple vortex solidified. From its churning depths, a figure rose. Mirela. Not a lesser minion, not a zombie, but Mirela herself, whole and perfect, her pristine white robes unmarred, her violet eyes now devoid of hate, reflecting only chilling loyalty. She floated an inch above the scorched earth, her expression serene, regal.
She looked at Vadim, then slowly, gracefully, bowed. A deep, reverent bow that spoke of absolute servitude. “My Lord,” her voice echoed, not from her lips, but directly in Vadim’s mind, cold and clear as a winter bell.
Then, she extended her hand, palm open. The dark luminescence that had vaporized Vadim’s thralls now flowed outwards, but with a different quality. It was not destructive, but reconstructive. A shimmering wave of inverted light, deep purple and obsidian black, washed over the area where Dragos had disintegrated. The black dust swirled, lifted, and began to reform. Bone clicked into place, armor plates coalesced, the heavy blade re-materialized with a deep thrum. In seconds, Dragos stood again, taller, stronger, his black armor gleaming, a silent sentinel of death.
The wave of dark light continued, rolling over the scattered remnants of Vadim’s skeletal legion, touching each shattered bone, each splintered rib. The broken thralls, the ones not utterly vaporized by Mirela’s initial blast, twitched, then reassembled, bone clicking against bone with renewed vigor. Even the deep gouges in Vadim’s sternum, the ones that had been screaming moments ago, felt a strange, cold balm. The lingering agony dulled to a distant echo.
[LESSER THRALLS: Restored. Condition: Optimal.]
[CHAMPION: Dragos – Reconstructed. Condition: Optimal.]
[GRAVEWALKER: Minor wounds healed.]
Zoya clawed her way free from the cracked stone, blood smearing her temple. Her squad was scrambling, yelling into their comms, dragging their wounded. Her vision was still swimming, but the outline of Mirela, standing whole, radiating that unnatural dark light, was unmistakable. And next to her, Dragos, somehow re-formed. Her mentor. Her rage simmered, cold and potent.
Her hand snapped to the rail-rifle slung across her back. The Guild’s top sniper rifle, ‘The Apex Predator,’ hummed with contained charge. She brought it up, the optical scope glowing faintly as it locked onto Vadim’s head. A perfect, clean shot. No more games. She squeezed the trigger.
The projectile, a blur of hyper-velocity, screamed through the air. It was a shot designed to pierce Tier-5 armor, to punch through concrete and steel. But an instant before impact, a shimmering barrier of inverted dark light, deep violet and utterly unyielding, flickered into existence around Vadim. The bullet struck with a dull *thunk*, impacting the field, and then dissolved into a shower of molten shrapnel.
Zoya lowered her rifle, the silence deafening save for the frantic comm chatter of her squad. She stared at the formation: the newly risen summon, the reformed Death Knight, and the man at their center, now protected by an impenetrable shield of dark magic. The sheer audacity. The impossible speed. To not just defeat, but *enslave* a Tier-4 in moments.
She brought her comm unit to her lips, her voice a strained whisper, barely audible above the rising wind. “Command, this is Zoya-7. The Gravewalker just soloed a Tier-4. Protocol Omega is authorized.”
