Chapter 13: Cracks in the Porcelain
1.2k words
Moonlight bled through the high glass dome of the royal conservatory, casting sharp, skeletal patterns across the marble floor. Crushed white roses littered the pathway where they had walked only minutes before, their sweet, cloying scent now mixing with the sharp tang of ozone.
Luke stood perfectly still, his silhouette cutting a hard line against the backdrop of glowing night lilies. In his palm, the tiny glass vial of silver-line poison caught the pale light, gleaming like a trapped star.
Evan swallowed hard, his throat tight enough to ache. His fingers twitched against his thighs, aching for the comforting weight of his card deck, but his hands remained empty and trembling.
Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating, interrupted only by the distant hum of Paragon’s high-altitude barriers.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Evan demanded, his voice cracking slightly before he forced it into a cold, defensive sneer.
Luke didn't answer right away. He slowly turned the vial over in his fingers, his movements deliberate, almost agonizingly calm.
A muscle leaped in his jaw, the only sign of the storm brewing beneath that perfect, porcelain facade.
"Did you put this in my glass, Evan?" Luke's voice was dangerously low, stripped of its usual warm, golden resonance.
Evan forced a sharp, mocking laugh, though his heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. "What if I did? You’re the golden prince of Paragon. Did you really think everyone in this shining palace wanted to bow at your feet?"
Step by step, Luke began to close the distance between them, his boots clicking softly against the polished stone.
My chest tightened as he approached, every instinct screaming at me to run, to strike, to throw up a wall of razor-sharp cards.
"I am asking you a simple question," Luke said, his blue eyes locked onto Evan's with a terrifying, unblinking intensity. "Do you want me dead?"
Heavy, suffocating panic flared in Evan's gut. He wanted to scream, to tear down the elegant glass walls of this pristine cage, to drag Luke down into the dirt where he belonged.
"Of course I want you gone!" Evan hissed, his defensive walls slamming up like iron gates. "Look at you. You’re everything I hate. You’re the perfect, sunshine-incarnate heir who gets everything handed to him on a silver platter while the rest of us starve in the gutters of the Penance Wing!"
Luke didn't stop walking. He kept coming, his gaze never wavering, absorbing the venomous words as if they were nothing but wind.
"You think you know me?" Evan screamed, his voice echoing off the glass dome, raw and desperate. "You’re a fool, Luke! A naive, blind little prince who trusts the first stray dog that bites him. I am a survivor from the slums. I cheat, I steal, and I survive by any means necessary!"
Cold sweat beaded on Evan's forehead as he backed up, his heels hitting the ornate stone balustrade of the gazebo.
Behind him lay a sheer drop into the dark, mist-covered gardens below, leaving him utterly cornered.
"I tried to poison you!" Evan lied, the words tasting like copper and ash on his tongue, his chest heaving as he tried to force the disgust into Luke’s eyes. "Hate me! Go on, run to your mother, tell the High Council, lock me in the deepest dungeon where the Heart family belongs! Just stop looking at me like I’m someone worth saving!"
Instead of backing away in disgust, Luke took the final step, closing the remaining space between them in a sudden, blur of movement.
His large hands slammed onto the stone railing on either side of Evan's hips, trapping him completely within the circle of his arms.
Evan gasped, his back pressing hard against the cold marble, his breath hitching as Luke leaned down, crowding him.
Golden hair fell forward, shadowing Luke’s face, but his eyes burned with a fierce, quiet intensity that made Evan’s knees go weak.
"Are you finished?" Luke whispered, his voice dangerously close, his breath warm against Evan's cold lips.
"Get off me," Evan spat, his hands coming up to push against Luke's broad chest, but it was like trying to move a mountain. Under his palms, he could feel the rapid, heavy thud of Luke's heart, matching his own frantic pulse.
"No," Luke said softly, his grip on the railing tightening. "You can scream at me all you want. You can paint yourself as the monster of my nightmares, Evan, but I’ve watched you. I’ve seen the way you look at the kids in the lower districts. I’ve seen the way you protected your family's honor even when they threw you away."
"You don't know anything about me!" Evan choked out, a hot tear of frustration threatening to spill over his lashes.
"I know you're terrified," Luke countered, his gaze dropping to Evan’s trembling lips before rising back to his eyes. "I know you wear those sharp cards like armor because you think if anyone gets close enough to touch you, they’ll find out you’re bleeding."
"Shut up," Evan whispered, the anger draining out of him, leaving behind a hollow, aching vulnerability that terrified him far more than any blade. "Just... shut up."
"I trust your actions, Evan," Luke murmured, his voice softening into something rich and thick with unspoken emotion. "You had a dozen chances to let me drink from that cup tonight. You could have let the poison do its work. But you didn't. You knocked it out of my hand."
"It was an accident," Evan lied weakly, his fingers curling into the fine fabric of Luke’s tunic, unable to push him away any longer.
"Liar," Luke whispered.
Silence descended upon them again, but the tension was no longer cold. It was hot, electric, stretching tight between their lips as the distance between them shrank to a mere fraction of an inch.
Evan could smell the scent of clean cedarwood and expensive soap radiating from Luke's skin, a luxurious scent that belonged to a world he was never meant to touch.
Yet, trapped here in the dark, with the weight of the golden prince pressing against him, the boundaries between the shining spires and the gritty slums seemed to dissolve into nothing.
His heart hammered wildly, a desperate plea for something he had denied himself his entire life.
Luke leaned in, his lips brushing against Evan's ear as he whispers, "I know my mother forced this on you."
