Chapter 3 of 4
Chapter 3: Crossing the Line
2.1k words
Silence stretched between us, thick and heavy enough to choke on.
Quinn didn't blink, her dark, kohl-rimmed eyes locking onto mine, searching for a crack in my composure.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Scent of clove cigarettes, vanilla body spray, and warm skin invaded my senses, making my head spin.
"You're quiet, Grace," she whispered, taking a half-step closer.
Her bare toes brushed against my slippers.
Underneath her oversized graphic tee, I knew those dangerous, hidden curves were waiting, but right now, her intensity was the real threat.
"I don't know what you want me to say," I managed to squeeze past the lump in my throat.
Lying had always been easy for me, especially during my years of traveling alone, moving from one casual fling to another without looking back.
But this girl was my roommate.
Living together meant there was no running away.
Quinn tilted her head, a slow, mocking smile tugging at the corner of her dark lips.
"I want you to be honest," she said, her voice dropping to a low, husky register that vibrated straight to my core.
"Tell me you don't feel it."
"Tell me you don't look at me when you think I'm asleep."
Guilt flushed hot through my cheeks.
She was right, of course.
Countless nights, I had crept into the kitchen for a glass of water, only to find her passed out on the couch, her baggy clothes riding up to reveal the soft, pale skin of her flat stomach and the intricate ink tracing her hip bones.
I had stared.
I had wanted.
"We are roommates, Quinn," I muttered, trying to sound like the mature thirty-eight-year-old I was supposed to be.
"You are twenty-two."
"I'm a grown woman, Grace, not a child," she snapped, her playful demeanor instantly evaporating into raw irritation.
Anger looked good on her, highlighting the sharp angle of her jaw and the fierce spark in her green-flecked eyes.
"Stop using my age as a shield because you're too terrified to admit you want me."
Clenching my fists, I forced myself to hold her gaze.
"It's not a shield, it's reality."
"Is it?"
She took another step, trapping me against the kitchen counter.
Cold marble pressed into my lower back, contrasting sharply with the radiating heat of her body.
Before I could protest, she reached out, her cool fingers wrapping gently around my wrist.
Her thumb brushed over my racing pulse point.
"Your heart is practically jumping out of your chest," she murmured, her gaze dropping to my mouth.
"That doesn't feel like reality to you?"
Breath hitched in my throat.
Desire, sharp and sudden, flared in my lower belly.
I wanted to grab her by her messy, dyed black hair and pull her down into a kiss that would silence her mocking words.
Instead, I pulled my wrist free, stepping sideways to break the suffocating proximity.
"I have work to do," I lied, my voice shaking slightly.
"We'll talk about this later."
Quinn didn't chase me.
She just stood there, watching me with a mixture of amusement and disappointment.
"Coward," she softly called out as I retreated down the hallway.
---
My bedroom door shut with a soft click, cutting off the tension but doing nothing to quiet my racing mind.
Leaning against the wood, I closed my eyes and took deep, shuddering breaths.
Why did she have this effect on me?
I was thirty-eight.
I had lived in four different countries, survived bad breakups, and built a successful freelance career from my laptop.
Yet, a twenty-two-year-old bartender with an attitude and too many tattoos had me hiding in my room.
Walking over to my desk, I flipped open my laptop, staring blankly at the spreadsheets and emails waiting for my attention.
Normally, the numbers brought me comfort, a reminder of the financial freedom and independence I had worked so hard to build.
Today, they looked like meaningless symbols.
Every time I closed my eyes, I felt the cool touch of her fingers on my wrist.
I could still smell her perfume lingering in my nostrils.
Rain began to pelt against the glass of my bedroom window, creating a steady, rhythmic tapping that matched the anxious thrum of my thoughts.
Outside, the sky turned a bruised, heavy purple.
Hours passed in a blur of fake productivity, my fingers typing out emails that I had to rewrite three times because my mind was entirely elsewhere.
By five in the afternoon, the apartment had grown quiet.
Creeping out of my room, I found the living room empty.
Quinn's bedroom door was closed, her usual heavy metal music noticeably absent.
She was probably getting ready for her shift at the dive bar downtown.
Pacing around the kitchen, I made a cup of black coffee, hoping the caffeine would clear the fog in my head.
A sudden rustle from the hallway made me freeze.
Quinn emerged, and my breath caught in my throat.
She had changed into her work clothes.
A tight, black mesh top clung to her torso, completely sheer except for a strategically placed black bralette underneath.
High-waisted, ripped denim shorts hugged her hips, exposing her long legs and the elaborate tattoos winding up her thighs.
Dark eyeliner framed her eyes, and her lips were painted a deep, blood-red.
"Like what you see?" she asked, leaning against the doorframe with an easy, casual grace.
"You're going to catch a cold," I blurted out, instantly cursing myself for sounding like a nagging mother.
Quinn laughed, a rich, genuine sound that sent shivers down my spine.
"I work in a crowded, sweaty bar, Grace."
"If anything, I'll be too hot."
She walked over to the counter, pouring herself a glass of water.
Every movement she made seemed designed to torment me.
Mesh top left very little to the imagination, showing off the soft curve of her waist and the swell of her breasts.
"Are you still mad at me?" she asked softly, looking up from her glass.
"I'm not mad," I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck.
"Just... overwhelmed."
"I didn't mean to push you so hard this morning," she admitted, placing her glass down.
"But I'm tired of the games."
"I like you, Grace."
"A lot."
Hearing her say it so plainly made my heart skip a beat.
"Quinn, I don't do relationships," I said, trying to find my footing.
"I like my life simple."
"Who said anything about a relationship?" she countered, taking a step toward me.
Her green-flecked eyes held a dangerous, playful glint.
"Maybe I just want to see how loud you can scream my name."
My jaw dropped.
Heat erupted in my cheeks, spreading rapidly down my neck and chest.
"Quinn!"
"What?" she teased, her eyes sparkling.
"Just being honest."
Before I could formulate a coherent response, her phone buzzed on the counter.
Glancing at the screen, she groaned.
"My manager needs me in early."
"Someone called out."
She grabbed her keys, her fingers lingering against mine as she snatched them from the counter.
"Think about what I said," she whispered, her voice a sultry promise.
"I'll be home late."
---
Night fell quickly, bringing a torrential downpour that rattled our high-rise windows.
Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the dark, empty living room in brief, ghostly intervals.
Sitting on the couch with a glass of red wine, I found myself unable to concentrate on anything.
Television played some mindless reality show in the background, but my focus remained entirely on the clock on the wall.
Eleven o'clock.
Midnight.
One in the morning.
Two.
Every minute felt like an eternity, her provocative words echoing in my mind like a siren song.
"Maybe I just want to see how loud you can scream my name."
Just thinking about it sent a shiver of pure, unadulterated anticipation through my veins.
Never had anyone spoken to me like that.
Never had anyone made me feel so completely out of control.
I was a planner, a woman who mapped out every detail of her life to avoid messiness.
But Quinn was the definition of messy.
She was loud, chaotic, and completely unfiltered.
Yet, I had never wanted anything more in my entire life.
By three-thirty, my wine glass was empty, and my nerves were frayed to a thread.
Suddenly, the sound of a key turning in the front door lock shattered the silence.
Quinn stumbled inside, immediately dripping water onto the hardwood floor.
Rain had completely ruined her hair, plastering the dark locks to her forehead and cheeks.
Mesh top was soaked through, clinging to her skin like a second layer and making the black bralette underneath completely transparent.
"Fucking weather," she muttered, shivering as she kicked off her heavy boots.
"You're freezing," I said, rising from the couch and heading straight to the bathroom to grab a thick, dry towel.
Returning to the living room, I stepped close and draped the towel over her shoulders.
"Thanks," she whispered, her teeth lightly chattering as she looked up at me.
Her eyeliner was slightly smudged, giving her a dark, exhausted look that only made her look more beautiful.
"Bad night?" I asked, my voice soft in the quiet apartment.
"Awful," she sighed, wrapping the towel tightly around herself.
"Some drunk guy kept trying to touch my waist while I was pouring drinks."
Heat flushed through my chest, my hands clenching into tight, white-knuckled fists.
"Did you report him?" I demanded, my voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble.
Quinn blinked, a soft, tired smile breaking through her exhaustion.
"Yeah, got him thrown out immediately," she murmured, stepping closer to me.
"You look really pretty when you get protective like that."
Heart beating wildly, I didn't back away this time.
"I don't like the thought of anyone touching you," I confessed, the truth slipping out before I could stop it.
Quinn's eyes widened, the playful teasing vanishing, replaced by a raw, naked vulnerability.
"Grace..." she breathed, her voice barely a whisper over the sound of the rain.
"If you don't mean that, you need to tell me."
"Because I can't keep doing this if you're just playing with me."
Stepping into her space, I eliminated the last few inches between us.
"I'm not playing," I whispered.
Cold fingers reached up to cup my jaw, her touch sending a jolt of pure electricity straight down my spine.
"Show me," she challenged, her green-flecked eyes locking onto mine with intense focus.
I didn't hesitate.
Leaning down, I pressed my lips to hers.
Quinn let out a soft gasp against my mouth, her grip on my jaw tightening as she pulled me closer.
She tasted like sweet rain and cherry lip balm.
It was messy, desperate, and completely intoxicating.
Our tongues tangled, tasting each other with a hunger that had been building for months.
Her wet clothes pressed against my thin pajama top, sending a delicious contrast of cold moisture and burning heat through my body.
Moaning softly, I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her petite frame flush against mine.
She was so small, yet she held a strength that completely dominated my senses.
Quinn backed me up, her hands sliding down to my hips to guide me.
Back of my knees hit the edge of the couch, and we tumbled down together in a tangle of limbs.
She quickly scrambled up, pinning me to the cushions.
Her dark hair dripped cold water onto my face, but I didn't care.
"Grace," she panted, her eyes dark with a desire that made my head spin.
"You have no idea what you're doing to me."
"Show me," I repeated, throwing her own words back at her.
Quinn smirked, a low growl escaping her throat as she leaned down to bite my neck.
Sharp teeth nipped at the sensitive skin right below my ear, making me arch my back and cry out.
Her hand slid under my pajama shirt, her warm palm finding the bare skin of my waist and traveling upward.
When her fingers cupped my breast, my breath caught entirely.
She squeezed gently, her thumb flicking over my hardened nipple until I was squirming beneath her, whimpering into the quiet room.
"You're so sensitive," she whispered against my collarbone, her mouth trailing wet kisses downward.
"I want to hear you scream."
"Please," I gasped, my hands gripping her shoulders, pulling her closer.
Suddenly, her body went completely rigid.
"What?" I whispered, confused by the sudden halt.
Her eyes were wide, staring intently past my shoulder toward the dark hallway.
Sound of scraping metal echoed from the front door, followed by a heavy, deliberate thud against the wood.
Someone was trying to force their way into the apartment.
