Chapter 1: The Ghost on the Asphalt

Rain lashed against Horácio’s low-cut fade, cold drops mixing with the sweat dripping down his temples. Mud coated his shins, heavy and thick, turning the Sunday league pitch into a swamp of desperate slide tackles and shattered ankles. "Pass the ball, Horácio!" screamed a voice from his left. Turning his head slightly, he caught sight of his striker, a guy with vibrant blue hair and wide, hungry eyes waiting at the edge of the box. Sirens wailed in the distance beyond the concrete walls surrounding the field, a reminder of the harsh neighborhood they played in. Giving up the ball was never an option. Trusting others only led to abandonment, a lesson carved into his chest from years of broken promises. Breathing deeply, Horácio narrowed his eyes, letting the noise of the screaming crowd melt into a dull, low hum. Suddenly, his vision shifted. Blue coordinate lines snapped into existence across the mud, tracing the exact velocity of the ball and the defensive vectors of the opposing team. Three seconds. That was all his spatial grid vision needed to map the future. Left-back moving at an angle of forty-five degrees, heavy on his right heel due to a strained hamstring. Center-back lunging with a desperate, sliding challenge that would miss by exactly four inches if Horácio cut inside now. "He’s blind!" the blue-haired striker roared, slamming his hands against his thighs in sheer frustration. Ignoring the scream, Horácio dragged the ball back with the sole of his boot, his movements fluid despite the swamp beneath him. Acceleration exploded through his thighs as he launched forward, leaving a spray of dirty water in his wake. Just as predicted, the center-back flew past on his backside, eating a mouth full of mud as Horácio skipped over his outstretched leg. Space opened up before him like an empty highway, the goalposts looming large and inviting. Goalkeepers always leaned left when a right-footed player approached from this angle, a statistical certainty of amateur leagues. Striking the ball with the outside of his boot, he sent it curling into the top right corner, completely out of reach. Netting rattled violently. Silence gripped the opposing side, while his own bench erupted into chaotic, disbelief-filled cheers. Standing alone in the penalty box, Horácio raised his arms, but his teammates didn’t run to embrace him; they stood back, glares of resentment burning into his back. Victory tasted sweet, yet the cold sting of isolation remained. --- Shivering under the gray sky, Horácio walked toward the sideline where the tournament organizers were preparing the meager prize money. Dirty bills stuffed into a cheap manila envelope represented their hard-earned victory, a small fortune for boys from these streets. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a figure standing apart from the loud, cheering crowd. Clad in a tailored black suit that looked completely out of place against the rusty chain-link fences, the man watched him with predatory intensity. Polished leather shoes stood sinking into the mud, yet the stranger didn’t seem to care about the ruin of his expensive footwear. Walking with a slow, deliberate stride, the man bypassed the tournament officials and approached Horácio directly. "Impressive display of selfishness," the man said, his voice a smooth, cultured purr that cut through the noise of the rain. Horácio wiped mud from his jaw, his muscles tensing as he gripped his jersey. "Who are you?" Reaching into his breast pocket, the stranger pulled out a sleek, matte-black envelope and held it out. Gold lettering gleamed on the dark paper, forming the crest of the elite Youth Football Academy. "Consider this your ticket out of the gutter," the man whispered, his eyes gleaming with a cold, analytical light. Taking the envelope, Horácio felt his heart hammer against his ribs like a trapped bird. Fear, sharp and icy, flooded his chest as he recognized the emblem stamped on the seal. "Vicente," Horácio breathed, his voice barely a whisper against the wind. Nodding slowly, the scout leaned in closer, his breath smelling of expensive coffee and mint. "Yes, your former mentor designed the entire Selection System," the scout confirmed, a cruel smile touching his lips. "He wanted to see if his finest failure would dare to show his face." Blood rushed to Horácio's ears, deafening him to the ambient sounds of the muddy pitch. Memories of Vicente's betrayal burned in his mind, the day his old coach had packed his bags and left for the pro leagues, leaving Horácio behind to rot in the amateur circuits. "He thinks I'm forgotten," Horácio hissed, his knuckles turning white as he clutched the black invitation. "He knows you are brilliant," the scout countered, his gaze dropping to Horácio's muddy boots. Leaning even closer, the man whispered words that felt like a dagger driving straight through Horácio's chest. "Your eyes are perfect, Horácio, but your feet are completely alone." --- Anger flared in Horácio's chest, hot and suffocating, pushing away the chill of the rain. "I don't need anyone," Horácio spat, stepping closer to the scout. "I won this tournament by myself. I don't need Vicente, and I don't need your academy to prove I'm the best." Laughing softly, the scout reached out and plucked the tournament prize money envelope right out of Horácio’s hands. "Hey! That belongs to my team!" Horácio yelled, reaching forward to grab it back. Before he could react, the scout gripped both ends of the thick paper envelope and ripped it cleanly in half. Crisp bills tore down the middle, fluttered into the mud, and instantly became soaked, ruined, and completely worthless. Horácio froze, his mouth hanging open in sheer shock as his entire life savings dissolved into the wet dirt. "Your entry fee into the selection is your entire past, Horácio," the scout said, pulling a silver pen and a contract from his jacket. "Sign this contract right now, or you can stay down here in the dirt, forgotten by the world forever."
