The sterile chime faded, leaving a silence that felt heavier than the dust motes dancing in the slum's dim light. Daris didn't flinch, didn't react to Verek’s erasure. His gaze was locked on the pulsing digits above Tila’s cot: [WARNING: TARGET NODE [TILA RENOK] INITIATING WIPE SEQUENCE.] “The Orbital Spire,” Daris stated, his voice flat, devoid of the exhaustion that should have been etched into his bones. “That’s where the Apex’s physical core is housed. We’re going there.” Senna, still processing the sudden, brutal digital evaporation of her former guildmaster, spun around. Her face was pale, but her eyes held a spark of renewed resolve. “The Spire? It’s practically impenetrable. Biometric locks, anti-grav turrets, a full regiment of Enforcers. And the only way up is the Grand Ascent hoist – access controlled by the highest echelons of Neo-Krov society.” “Precisely,” Daris replied, already moving towards the stolen datapad Senna had used. “Which means we don’t smash our way in. We walk.” His fingers flew across the cracked screen, a flurry of precise taps. “The annual ‘Apex Gala’ is tonight. Every high-tier socialite and corporate drone will be there flaunting status. It’s our backdoor.” Within the hour, they were aboard a public air-taxi, rising above the smog-choked lower tiers. Daris, now clad in a surprisingly well-fitting, stolen executive suit, adjusted a cufflink he’d pried from a discarded data-terminal. Senna, in a sleek, dark gown she’d “requisitioned” from a deserted boutique, watched him with a mix of apprehension and grudging admiration. He looked the part of a newly minted billionaire, albeit one with a dangerously hollow stare. “Remember the plan,” Daris murmured, his eyes scanning the opulent, dizzying expanse of the Spire’s reception hall below. “You create a network breach, I create the distraction. We need to be loud enough to draw attention, but not so loud they seal the lifts before you get us inside the vertical shaft.” They entered the Gala, a cacophony of synthetic music, clinking holo-flutes, and superficial laughter. The air was thick with the scent of synthetic nectar and the hum of personal shields. Daris drifted towards a crowded wheel, calm and precise. He surveyed the array of bets, the glittering chips, and the bored dealer with a half-smile that didn't reach his eyes. His hand brushed a stack of platinum chits. [BET INITIATED: 50,000 CREDITS. OUTCOME: ROULETTE, BLACK 17.] The ball spun, a blur of chrome, slowing, skipping, then settling with a soft click. Black 17. The dealer’s eyebrows arched minutely. Daris collected his winnings, his stack now three times its original size. He moved to the next table, then the next, a phantom of luck. Each spin, each card draw, each roll of the dice fell his way. A crowd began to gather, whispers spreading like a virus through the polished hall. [WARNING: TARGET [DARIS RENOK] ENGAGING IN MANIPULATIVE PROBABILITY. HUNTER-VIRUS DEPLOYMENT IMMINENT.] “Excuse me, sir.” A voice, sharp and laced with condescension, cut through the murmuring crowd. A burly officer in an impeccably tailored uniform stepped forward, personal guards fanning out behind him. His gaze was dismissive, sweeping over Daris’s unfamiliar face. “You seem to be having quite the run. Perhaps… too much of a run.” Daris merely tilted his head. “Is there an issue, Commander? I merely understand probability better than most.” His voice remained even. The officer's lip curled. “Fortune favors preparation, not statistical anomalies. I propose a direct challenge. One final wager. Winner takes all. My entire stake of two hundred million against yours.” He gestured to a nearby baccarat felt, cleared by his retinue. “Gambling with funds is for the insecure,” Daris murmured. He reached into his suit jacket, fingers closing on cold ridged casing. He pulled out an explosive canister, pin intact. He palmed it, the cold steel a stark contrast to the luxurious surroundings. “No, General. We’ll make this interesting.” He pulled the pin with a soft *snick*, the spoon springing free with a hiss. The safety mechanism was now engaged by his thumb alone. Patrons recoiled, spilling drinks as alarms shrilled. Elite guards froze, their hands hovering over their sidearms, unsure how to react. A live ordnance. In the Spire’s main hall. Nax’s face went from contempt to pure, unadulterated fear. Senna, who had just bypassed the final access lock to the lift console, nearly dropped her datapad. [WARNING: TARGET [DARIS RENOK] ENGAGING IN EXTREME RISK SCENARIO. OUTCOME: DEPLOYMENT OF LIVE ORDNANCE ON ROULETTE, BLACK 17. PROBABILITY OF SURVIVAL: 0.000001%] “Black seventeen again,” Daris said, his voice dangerously calm, his thumb still holding the spoon. He placed the primed explosive gently onto the wheel's rim, nudging it onto the designated number. The croupiers scattered, overturning tables in their haste. The officer stumbled backward, his guards forming a panicked huddle. The ball spun. The hall fell dead quiet beneath the hum of the Spire. The munition sat motionless on Black 17. The ball clicked, bounced, and with an impossible, sickening precision, landed in the slot for Black 17. [BET SUCCESSFUL. OUTCOME: ROULETTE, BLACK 17. DARIS RENOK WINS. CREDIT TRANSFER: 200,000,000 CREDITS.] The silence shattered. Screams erupted. The officer stared at the munition, then at Daris, drained of color. Daris offered a slight, predatory grin. “Thank you for your generous wager.” He tipped his chin toward Senna. Senna, fingers slick on the screen, broke the Grand Ascent terminal. A new interface flashed across the glass: [GRAND ASCENT PROTOCOL: DUAL-SACRIFICE INITIATED. SYNCHRONIZED BIOMETRIC ENGAGEMENT REQUIRED FOR ASCENSION.] “Daris!” she hissed through their comms. “The car... it’s not just biometric. It demands a dual-sacrifice! Two life signatures, simultaneously!” Before Daris could reply, the main hall doors burst open. A squad of Elite System-Paladins, their chrome armor gleaming under the Spire’s lights, stormed in, energy rifles raised. Their targeting lasers painted Daris in a dozen red dots. He didn’t hesitate. With a sharp twist, he seized Senna's harness, hauling her against his chest as he dove into the exposed drop. The plunge snatched the air from their lungs. “Hold on,” he said into her ear, and released the striker lever.
