The red alert pulsed across Daris’s retinas, a digital scream in a world of frozen silence. His body, suspended above the frozen hover-freighter, felt solid, the chill of the Neo-Krov night air cutting against his exposed skin. The truck, still and silent, bore the mark of his dice. Its massive engine exhaust vents, usually a blur, showed every intricate seam. The air, thick with the city’s metallic tang, hung heavy and unmoving. Then, with a sudden, violent snap, the illusion shattered. Time roared back. The freighter’s engines deafened him. The wind ripped at his clothes. He hit the roof of the truck with a violent jolt that stole the air from his lungs, tumbling across the cold plating before slamming against the far edge. The vehicle sped away, a blur of red lights vanishing into the urban haze. Daris coughed, pain lancing through his ribs, but a grim, almost manic smile tugged at his lips.
[Anomaly Detected. System Integrity Compromised. Oblivion Chasm deployment mandated.]
“A guaranteed win,” Daris rasped, pushing himself to a crouch, ignoring the throbbing agony. “So that’s how it works.”
He climbed down the side of the building, dropping and catching rusty rungs, until his boots touched the grime-slick alleyway. The air still thrummed with the aftershocks of his temporal gamble. His body felt different—lighter, stronger. The System’s prompt wasn’t a punishment. It was a confirmation.
“Renok! Get your scrawny hide in here!” The voice, a grating blare through the alley’s comm-speaker, belonged to Overseer Verek. “Your mandatory deployment just got expedited.”
Daris knew what ‘expedited’ meant. It meant Verek had found a way to throw him into the deepest, darkest hole available. The Overseer’s office in the Krov Vanguard Base showcased his vanity in polished chrome and panoramic views of the city’s upper spires. Verek, a man whose face was a perpetually sneering roadmap of ambition, leaned back in his synth-leather chair, two hulking Vangorian guards at his side.
“Word travels fast about your little stunt, Renok,” Verek said, tapping a stylus against a datapad. “Leaping off a high-rise. Trying to game the System, are we? Cute.” He didn’t wait for a response. “The Apex Algorithm has flagged you. ‘Anomaly Detected.’ You’re a liability, a statistical outlier. And liabilities get removed.”
Daris just stared, his gaze flat and unblinking. “Where am I going?”
Verek’s smile widened, a predatory flash of teeth. “The Oblivion Chasm. S-Rank. It’s been… uncooperative lately. My elite team, the ‘Ironclad Reavers,’ are already inside, trying to stabilize it. But you, Renok, you’re just a distraction for the big boys. A warm-up act. Think of it as public service.”
[Target: Oblivion Chasm. Deployment protocol initiated.]
Before Daris could react, the guards seized him, dragging him towards a shimmering portal at the far end of the office. The air around the portal crackled with raw mana, twisting into chaotic ribbons of energy. He didn’t fight, didn’t struggle. His mind was already running the figures, sorting through the odds.
“Don’t worry, Renok,” Verek called out, his voice dripping with false concern. “We’ll send your sister the official notice. ‘Died a hero.’ Or, more accurately, ‘disintegrated into sub-atomic particles.’ Either way, a problem solved.”
The guards shoved Daris through the portal. The world dissolved into a maelstrom of light and sound, then snapped back into brutal, chilling focus. He stood on a jagged rock shelf, slick with some unknown ichor, in a cavern vast enough to swallow entire city blocks. The air here was thick with decay and the metallic scent of spilled blood. Distant roars echoed, shaking the very foundations of the chasm.
Bodies littered the ground—Krov Vanguard soldiers, their elite armor shredded, their weapons scattered. The Ironclad Reavers. Daris’s gaze swept across the carnage, noting the fractures in their plating and the spread of severed limbs. This wasn’t a random slaughter. This was methodical.
And then he saw her. Senna Vangath, her scarlet Striker armor cracked, a plasma rifle still clutched in her hand, lay pinned beneath a fallen support beam. Her face, usually a mask of focused intensity, was strained with pain. She looked up, her eyes locking onto Daris, a flicker of surprise, then something akin to disdain. A bottom-tier Gambler, here? How useless.
Towering over her, a nightmare manifest, was the Rift-Gorgon. A monstrosity of chitin and writhing, corrupted mana, easily thirty feet tall. Its hide was a mosaic of jagged, obsidian plates, each etched with glowing crimson runes. One massive claw, tipped with razor-sharp talons, was slowly descending, aiming to crush Senna where she lay.
“Move!” Senna screamed, her voice hoarse, but her legs were trapped. “Get out of here, you idiot!”
Daris didn’t move. He took a step forward, then another, his worn boots crunching on fallen debris, placing himself directly between Senna and the monstrous claw. The colossus paused, its multi-faceted eyes swiveling like clusters of cut glass to focus on the new, insignificant target.
“Renok, what are you doing?” Senna yelled, her voice laced with disbelief and fury. “You’ll be vaporized!”
His voice, when it came, was unnervingly calm, a low murmur in the face of annihilation. “I’m making a bet.”
He reached into his pouch, his fingers extracting a single, tarnished coin. Not dice this time. Something more precise, more intimate. He held it up, catching the faint, sickly glow from the Chasm’s ceiling.
“I bet my heart,” Daris declared, his voice cutting through the roar of the monster, “against the core of this beast. All in.”
[Daris Renok: Class Skill ‘Fatespin’ activated. Outcome: Divine Intervention. Effect: Critical Strike Guaranteed.]
The claw slammed down, a thunderous collision that shook the cavern floor. Daris moved faster. In that split second, as the talon whipped downward, he flicked the coin. It spun, a silver blur, arcing through the fetid air. It was a casual, almost dismissive gesture. Yet, the coin didn’t merely fly; it became a guided missile, piercing the air with impossible speed.
It struck the monster. Not against its armored hide, which would have deflected the blow, but directly into the glowing, pulsating rune at the center of its chest—its core, a visible weak point no wider than Daris’s thumb.
The obsidian plates over the creature's chest flared, then spiderwebbed with cracks. A low, guttural shriek, a sound of agony and pure disbelief, ripped through the Chasm. The colossal creature staggered, its multi-faceted eyes dimming. Its monumental weight shifted, and it crashed to the ground with a shuddering crash, sending plumes of dust and gore into the air. Its chitinous body twitched, then went still. The glowing runes on its hide faded to an inert black.
Silence descended. Absolute, profound silence, broken only by the distant drip of ichor and Senna’s ragged breathing.
Senna, free from the crushing beam, stared. Her mouth hung slightly open, her brow knit with shock and a dawning comprehension. The surviving Ironclad Reavers, emerging from behind cover, their faces pale and streaked with soot, mirrored her expression. They had been fighting this S-Rank disaster for hours, losing comrades, barely making a dent. And this… this bottom-tier Gambler, mocked by the entire base, had just one-shotted it with a flicked coin.
[S-Rank Rift-Behemoth neutralized. Core harvested.]
A surge of raw mana, potent and invigorating, flowed into Daris. His body hummed, the lingering aches from his earlier gamble vanishing. His mind registered the spike in raw output.
[Daris Renok: +50 Strength, +50 Agility, +20 Constitution, +10 Mana Capacity. Permanent.]
[Anomaly Detected. System Integrity Compromised. Apex Algorithm initiating emergency patch.]
[Patch 1.01 Deployed. Hunter-Virus unleashed.]
