Chapter 3 of 10

The First Rend

1.5k words

Lysander Valerius woke to the taste of ash. His tongue felt thick, his throat raw. The air in his hidden study, usually still and heavy with ancient dust, now thrummed with a nervous energy. His mind churned, a frantic kaleidoscope of forbidden glyphs and impossible theories. He was a Riftbinder. The words echoed, cold and real. His hands shook. He lifted them, seeing the faint, almost imperceptible shimmer that clung to his skin. Not light. Not heat. Pure potential. The memories of a family that never was pressed in, a constant, dull ache behind his eyes. He’d torn open the world for them. He’d found a power meant to guard the very seams of existence. A curse, the ancient texts had warned. A legacy of unimaginable burden. He pushed himself upright, his joints protesting. His gaze fell upon the open grimoire on his desk, its pages brittle, its ink a midnight black. The final passage, the one that had shattered his reality, seemed to pulse. *"He who binds the rift, binds the void. He who rends the void, risks all."* He stretched a trembling finger towards the page. He wanted to feel it again, that impossible shift in perception, that tearing sensation. His fingertip neared the aged parchment. The air around it warped. Not a visual distortion, but a sense of *wrongness*. The space itself seemed to thin, to stretch like taffy. A tiny, nearly invisible crack appeared, spider-webbing across the air just above the book. Lysander snatched his hand back. His breath caught. The crack, no larger than a hair, pulsed with an inner, abyssal darkness. It wasn't empty. It was *full* of everything that wasn't here. Fear, sharp and cold, shot through him. He’d done it. The power was real. It was also terrifyingly uncontrolled. The crack widened, stretching, no longer hair-thin but a jagged line of black. A faint, high-pitched whine emanated from it, like stretched metal. Then, a crash. Not from his hidden chamber, but from the main house above. Stone grinding. Wood splintering. Lysander froze. Someone had found him. Someone had come. The whine from the rift intensified, rattling the teeth in his skull. The air grew frigid. He slapped his palm over the crack, instinctively trying to close it, to undo what he’d wrought. His flesh burned. A searing cold. The rift pulsed beneath his hand, resisting. The sheer alien pressure of it pushed back. Another crash. Closer this time. Footsteps. Heavy. Resolute. Lysander scrambled, grabbing the grimoire. He tucked it under his arm. His hidden chamber, once a sanctuary, now felt like a trap. “Lysander Valerius!” A voice, deep and resonant, boomed through the stone walls. “The Seventh Seal knows of your transgression!” The Seventh Seal. An ancient order, whispered in hushed tones, guardians of forbidden knowledge, hunters of aberrations. They were real. Panic seized him. He needed to escape. He looked at the shimmering, resisting rift beneath his hand. Could he push through it? Into what? The thought was a desperate gamble. He pulled his hand away. The crack shimmered, still open, hungry. More footsteps. Coming down the hidden stairs. There was no time. He stared at the rift. It beckoned, a doorway to madness or salvation. He pushed against it with both hands, not trying to close it, but to *open* it wider. His entire body vibrated. Bones ached. Muscles screamed. The air around him shimmered violently, like heat haze over desert sands. The small crack tore. It ripped open, soundlessly at first, then with a sound like tearing cloth, expanding into a ragged oval taller than himself. Beyond it, a swirling vortex of indistinct colors and impossible shapes. No ground. No sky. Just pure, chaotic void. “There!” A voice barked from the stairwell. Lysander didn’t hesitate. He launched himself into the roiling instability, the grimoire clutched tight. The void swallowed him whole. --- He tumbled. Up was down, forward was backward. The pressure was immense, crushing, then suddenly absent. His ears popped. His stomach lurched. He landed hard on something metallic, scraping his knees. The air tasted sterile, coppery. He gasped, sucking in a lungful of cold, processed atmosphere. He lay there, disoriented, on a grating floor. Above him, a distant hum vibrated through the structure. He pushed himself up, his eyes darting around. He was in a corridor. A narrow passage of dull, grey metal, lit by strips of pale, flickering light embedded in the ceiling. Pipes, thick as his arm, snaked along the walls, dripping slow, viscous fluid onto the floor in places. This wasn’t any place he knew. Not the Valerian estate, not the city of Eldoria. This was… alien. A clatter behind him. He spun around. The rift he’d made was shrinking, closing with agonizing slowness. And emerging from it, a figure. Tall, gaunt, clad in dark, unadorned robes. The leader of the Seventh Seal. Inquisitor Rylas. His face was sharp, etched with an ancient severity, his eyes like chips of obsidian. “You are a fool, Valerius,” Rylas’ voice was flat, devoid of emotion. “To open such a gate, unprepared.” Lysander backed away, his heart hammering against his ribs. He felt weak, drained. The effort of the rift had taken its toll. “What… what is this place?” Lysander managed, his voice a ragged whisper. Rylas took a step, then another, closing the distance. “A forgotten corner of a forgotten realm. One of many you have no right to touch.” The rift behind Rylas finally snapped shut, leaving no trace. They were trapped here. Or Lysander was. “Your lineage guards the breaches,” Rylas continued, his voice echoing in the metallic corridor. “They maintain the integrity of the world. They do not *tear* it open for selfish pursuits.” “Selfish?” Lysander barked, a surge of adrenaline momentarily overriding his fear. “I sought answers! I sought my family!” Rylas tilted his head, a gesture of cold disdain. “A weakness. Your phantom memories are a consequence, not a justification. A price your bloodline pays for its power, for its proximity to what lies beyond.” Lysander’s blood ran cold. *Phantom memories are a consequence.* A price. “You are a rogue spark,” Rylas said, his hand slowly rising. “A danger. You must be extinguished before you ignite a conflagration.” His palm faced Lysander. A faint, sickly green glow coalesced there, twisting the air. It felt like an invisible vise tightening around Lysander’s chest. Lysander gasped, stumbling back. He scrabbled at his chest, his lungs refusing to draw breath. This wasn't physical force. This was something else. Pure suppression. The green light intensified, pulsating with malevolent intent. Lysander fought it, thrashed against the unseen restraint. His vision began to grey at the edges. He felt a faint pull, a desperate yearning from within. The grimoire, still clutched under his arm, suddenly felt warm. A resonance. He slammed the book against the metal wall, a desperate, senseless act. It made a dull clang. But it was enough. The pressure eased, infinitesimally. A spark. A tiny fracture in the Inquisitor’s hold. Lysander seized it. He pushed out, not with a rift, but with a raw, desperate surge of the void energy still churning in his core. The grey metal wall beside him shuddered. A section of it, about his size, visibly shifted, pulled inward by some unseen force. Rylas’s eyes widened, a flicker of surprise breaking his cold mask. “What sorcery is this?” It wasn't sorcery. It was Riftbinding. Not opening a portal, but *bending* the space, distorting the very material of the wall. Lysander pushed harder, teeth gritted. The metal groaned. With a final, agonizing effort, he ripped the section of wall free. It wasn't a clean tear. It was an ugly, distorted hole, bent and warped inwards as if crushed by an invisible fist. Behind it lay darkness. A small, cramped service tunnel, reeking of stale air and something metallic. “You cannot escape your fate, Valerius!” Rylas bellowed, the green light flaring, redoubling his attack. Lysander didn’t answer. He squeezed through the twisted opening, his body protesting against the jagged edges. He heard Rylas’s heavy boots approaching, the rhythmic clang of metal on metal. He scrambled into the dark tunnel, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs. The air was thick, oppressive. He could hear Rylas just outside, his rage palpable. Lysander crawled forward, his hands scraping against unseen obstacles. He didn’t know where he was going. He didn’t know what horrors this realm held. But he knew one thing. He couldn't go back. Not to Rylas. Not until he understood the true price of his lineage, and the meaning of the family he could almost remember. He moved deeper into the suffocating darkness, a desperate whisper from the void echoing in his mind: *"Seek the Source. Find the First Tear. Only then will you truly remember."* A new, terrifying objective in a world far removed from his own. Then, a sudden, blinding flash from ahead. A roar. And the unmistakable sound of something enormous, alien, stirring in the depths of the metallic labyrinth.
