Chapter 9 of 10
Overload

“Nimira Zaltus,” Jorvan’s voice, amplified and distorted by the suit’s internal comms, boomed through the submerged dome. A sneer stretched across his face, visible through the suit’s transparent cockpit. “So predictable, always rushing to be the hero. You’re right on time for your final performance.”
He gestured with the Arca-suit’s massive metallic grip, the severed power line still sparking violently. Raw, unrestrained current pulsed from the central nexus, forming a dazzling web of light that converged at Jorvan’s hand. The suit’s ocular sensors flared, casting a malevolent red glow across Nimira and Varonis. The rumble of the falling city above was a distant, but ever-present, threat.
“The city’s descent is irreversible,” Jorvan declared, a theatrical flourish in his tone. “Unless, of course, the Myr matrix receives its intended power source. You. One perfect catalyst to power Oravan’s grid and restore balance. Think of the legacy, Nimira. A martyr for the floating jewel.”
Nimira’s lips thinned, a dangerous glint entering her eyes. She hadn’t come this far, hadn’t clawed her way back from death, to be fuel. Not again.
Varonis stepped forward, a low growl rumbling in his chest. “You will not touch her, Dax.” His hand went to his hip, finding only the empty holster where his plasma pistol should have been, lost during their submersible’s breach. He was unarmed, facing a mechanized behemoth.
Jorvan laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “Oh, Varonis. Still playing the protective husband? How quaint. You never could keep her safe, could you? Not from the lake, not from me.” He tightened his grip on the conduit, a surge of energy making the suit hum.
“She’s not a battery,” Varonis retorted, his tone iron, his body tensing for an assault. He advanced, ignoring Nimira’s warning tug on his arm. Every instinct screamed at him to shield her, to tear Jorvan from that monstrous rig.
“She is *my* decryption key,” Jorvan corrected, his eyes fixing on the faint frost-mark at Nimira’s throat. “And she will serve her purpose. Step aside, Varonis, or I’ll crush you before she even has time to scream.”
Varonis didn’t falter. He lunged low, aiming for the suit’s knee linkage to test the plating. He moved with a brutal, practiced efficiency, a predator against a clumsy beast. The suit’s massive foot stomped down where he’d been a moment before, cracking the obsidian floor.
Nimira watched, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. Varonis was fast, agile, but the suit was too robust, too powerful. He dodged a sweeping arm, then another, his movements precise, almost desperate. He swung a fist, landing a jarring blow against the suit’s knee, the impact doing nothing but creating a dull clang.
“Futile,” Jorvan sneered, the suit’s arm swinging with terrifying speed, catching Varonis in the side and sending him careening into a wall of copper feeder-lines. Sparks flew as Varonis crashed, a pained gasp escaping him. He pushed himself up, his face grim, a trickle of blood at his temple.
“Varonis!” Nimira cried, her gaze locking onto the suit. There had to be a vulnerability. She remembered Lyzra, the double agent, her secret wink, the flash-drive. *Cooling vents.* Lyzra had mentioned something about the Arca-suit’s experimental cooling vents being a design flaw, a spot where excess heat was shunted out, making them a point of weakness if overloaded.
Jorvan raised the suit’s foot, a crushing stomp meant to pin Varonis flat against the bulkheads. “Any last words, Teth?”
Varonis looked up, catching Nimira’s stare with unyielding focus. He wouldn’t surrender. He wouldn’t let her be taken.
Just as the suit’s foot began its descent, a sharp, piercing whine erupted from the chassis’s spine. A blinding flash of white light erupted from the suit’s upper chassis, followed by a deafening *CRUMP!* The explosion tore through reinforced plating, sending shrapnel whistling across the chamber. Jorvan’s roar of surprise was cut short as the suit buckled, smoke billowing from its back. A critical section of the armor, where the cooling vents were positioned, had been ripped open, exposing glowing, overheated components.
“What in the blazes?!” Jorvan shrieked, struggling with the controls. The suit spasmed, its movements jerky and uncontrolled. The master feed-line in its hand sparked wildly, threatening to disconnect.
Nimira blinked, then a triumphant smile spread across her face. Lyzra. That calculated double-cross, the flash-drive, it wasn’t just secrets. It was a Trojan horse, a payload. Lyzra hadn't just pretended to play informant; she had slipped a corrupting sequence into Jorvan’s rig under his nose weeks ago.
Varonis, dazed but alive, scrambled away from the now crippled suit, his gaze flicking between the smoking machine and Nimira’s knowing smile. A silent message passed between them: *Lyzra.*
“You… you conniving little spy!” Jorvan raged, finally understanding. He thrashed the suit, trying to regain control, but the damage was severe. Exposed wires sizzled, and the Arca-Core in its chest began to glow an unstable, angry orange.
Nimira stepped forward, her expression hardening, her earlier fear replaced by a cold, resolute fury. She was not a sacrifice. She was the one who rewrote the rules. The frost-mark on her neck pulsed, a faint blue light spreading beneath her skin.
“You want a power source, Jorvan?” she challenged, her voice clear and strong in the echoing cavern. “You won’t get a sacrifice. You’ll get an *overload*.”
Ignoring Varonis’s urgent shout, Nimira marched towards the flailing suit. The primary nexus of Arca-Core bus-bars thrummed, their charge flowing erratically now that the suit was compromised. She could feel the raw resonance vibrating through the deck plates, calling to her frost-mark, to the lost engine within her.
Jorvan, desperate, lunged the crippled suit towards her, aiming a single, remaining functional arm. “You think you can defy me? I’ll force you into the matrix myself!”
Nimira didn’t flinch. She extended her hand, not to protect herself, but to *grasp* the chaotic energy. The blue glow of her frost-mark intensified, crawling up her arm, blooming across her palm. It wasn’t just absorbing; it was *attracting*.
With a soundless scream that only she could hear, Nimira reached out and plunged her hand directly into the exposed, sparking Arca-Core of Jorvan’s suit. The ancient energy, intended to power Oravan, roared into her, a torrent of raw, untamed power. The frost-mark on her neck flared, an icy blue sun bursting across her skin.
“NO!” Jorvan shrieked, his voice filled with terror as the suit’s systems went haywire. The internal Arca-Core, now linked to Nimira, began to destabilize at an alarming rate. It wasn’t a connection; it was a hostile takeover.
The blue light radiating from Nimira intensified, eclipsing the suit’s angry orange. Her frost-mark pulsed, draining the suit’s core, overriding every governor. The Arca-suit began to vibrate uncontrollably, its metallic shell groaning under immense pressure. The air in the chamber crackled with hoarfrost.
“This isn’t… possible!” Jorvan screamed, his face contorted in disbelief and agony. His suit was losing cohesion, crumbling from the inside out.
With a final, shattering roar, the entire mechanized Arca-suit imploded. Not with a fiery explosion, but with a frigid, silent vaporization. The heavy metal shell, the intricate wiring, the Arca-Core—everything that composed Jorvan’s monstrosity turned to supercooled dust, dissolving into nothingness, leaving behind only a swirling mist of icy particles. Jorvan Dax, still strapped inside, was annihilated in the blink of an eye, his last desperate cry swallowed by the sudden, profound silence.
The silence was deafening, broken only by the distant, groaning shudder of Oravan above. Then, a new sound began. A low hum, growing steadily into a powerful thrum. The central nexus of Arca-Core lines, previously unstable, now glowed with a pure, vibrant white. The city’s engines, once sputtering, roared back to life, a triumphant symphony echoing through the frigid depths.
Varonis stumbled, his gaze fixed on her in stunned shock. Nimira stood at the nexus, a beacon of icy blue light, her hand still outstretched. The frost-mark covered her entire body now, a delicate lattice of shimmering ice beneath her skin. She had absorbed it all. She had saved the city.
Then, the blue light began to recede, drawing back into her, shrinking until only the faint mark on her neck remained. Her hand dropped. A small, serene smile touched her lips. Her eyes, filled with an ancient, weary power, met Varonis’s.
“Nimira?” he breathed, fear gripping him. She looked… cold. Too cold.
Her smile faltered. Her eyelids drooped. The last vestige of the frost-mark on her neck flared one final, brilliant time, then vanished. Her body temperature plummeted. Varonis reached her, catching her as she swayed. Her skin was freezing beneath his touch. Her chest stopped rising. Her vibrant eyes glazed over, turning a crystalline blue, like frozen sapphire. Her heart stopped.
And Nimira Zaltus turned into solid ice.
