Chapter 7 of 10

Short-Circuiting the CEO

1.3k words

Varonis Teth, a sentinel of fury and relief, filled the vault’s entrance. His weapon’s muzzle still released tendrils of smoke, a stark contrast to the desperate warmth in his gaze. Nimira didn’t speak. The alarms, the distant shouts, the very air vibrating with urgency – they were a cacophony she had no time for. Her frost-mark, a faint blue tracery beneath her collar, throbbed with a low, insistent pulse, reminding her of the cold, hungry maw of the mechanical sun. Delay was death. She took a single, powerful stride, closing the distance between them before he could even form a protest. Her hands, surprisingly strong, shot out, seizing the lapels of his torn coat. The rough fabric bunched under her grip, pulling him off balance, his grip on the heavy-bore Arca-pulse rifle momentarily loosening. His pupils dilated, reflecting her own fierce resolve. Then, she rose onto her toes, pressing herself against him with a sudden, aggressive force. Her lips, cool from the vault’s chill, met his in a searing, breathless contact. It wasn’t a gentle kiss, not a tender reassurance. This was a claim, a demand, a violent promise thrown into the face of a collapsing world. It tasted of metallic dust and the faint ozone tang of Arca-cores, but beneath it, a desperate sweetness blossomed, overwhelming in its intensity. For a moment, Varonis was dead still. The Arca-pulse rifle clattered from his unresisting grasp, hitting the durasteel floor with a resounding clang that echoed in the corridor. His body, usually a fortress of unyielding control, went slack, then rigid, then slack again, a sequence of short-circuited reactions. His hands, which had been raised to push her away, hesitated, then slowly, tentatively, rose to cup her face, his thumbs tracing the line of her jaw. His lips, initially unresponsive, melted against hers, a tremor running through his powerful frame. He kissed her back, slowly at first, then with an accelerating hunger that threatened to consume them both. She broke the kiss, a sharp, decisive movement that left him gasping, his eyes cloudy with confusion and a raw, burgeoning longing. His dark hair was mussed, his cheeks flushed crimson, the plasma char mark on his skin somehow making him look younger, more vulnerable. He stared at her, baffled, the strategic mind of the corporate titan reduced to a sputtering mess. “Nimira,” he managed, his voice a low, rough rasp, stripped clean of its usual authority. “Don’t ‘Nimira’ me, Varonis Teth,” she said, her voice bright and cheerful, wildly at odds with the gravity of the situation, yet crackling with an undeniable power. She released his coat, then immediately snatched up his dropped rifle with surprising ease, testing its weight. “You think you can lock me in here, make me wait, while the city falls apart? While *you* face Jorvan alone? After all this?” She waved the smoking rifle in a broad, dismissive gesture. “Honestly, husband, it’s insulting.” A small team of armored security operatives, clad in reinforced ceramite and armed with Arca-carbines, had appeared at the corridor's end, drawn by the opening vault and the clatter of the rifle. They froze, their expressions a mixture of confusion and shock as they witnessed their stoic CEO, flushed and disoriented, being cheerfully lectured by his wife, who now held his primary weapon. Nimira turned to them, her smile broadening. “Alright, gentlemen! Operation: Retrieve the Reckless CEO is officially over. New orders. Jorvan Dax has Oravan’s chief magitek designers and is attempting to overload the Arca-Core grid.” She pointed the rifle towards the main Spire access tubes. “He’ll be moving them via a mid-air supply train, probably headed for the Myr Matrix relays on the periphery. We need to intercept that train. Now.” The troopers exchanged bewildered glances, then looked to Varonis for confirmation. He was still staring at Nimira, a dazed, almost dreamy expression on his face, his lips still tingling from her kiss. He looked like he’d been hit by a localized EMP. His own comms unit, still clipped to his belt, crackled with frantic reports, but he seemed deaf to them. Nimira sighed, a theatrical puff of air. “Varonis, darling? Focus. We have a city to save.” She nudged him with the rifle butt. “Unless you’d prefer to stand there, blushing, while Jorvan dismantles everything you’ve built?” That snapped him out of it. The mention of Jorvan, of his empire, seemed to re-engage the cold, calculating part of his mind. His gaze sharpened, the raw emotion receding slightly, replaced by a steely glint. He ran a hand through his disheveled hair, still visibly flustered, but regaining his composure with remarkable speed. “The supply train,” he stated, his voice still a little rough, but firm. “Heading for the western relay network, most likely the Cinderfall Junction. Lyzra reported it moments ago.” “Excellent,” Nimira chirped, handing him back his rifle. “Then let’s move.” She led the way, a determined stride in her step, leaving a slightly rumpled, still-blushing Varonis to follow, the squad scrambling to keep pace with their unexpectedly assertive CEO’s wife. They moved with crisp efficiency, utilizing the Spire’s internal transit tubes to reach a hangar bay bristling with sleek, high-speed interceptor skiffs. The city outside was a chaos of spiraling air traffic and emergency beacons. Even from the fortified Spire, they could feel the subtle, unsettling tremors as the vast metropolitan structure began to lose equilibrium. Their interceptor, a compact, heavily armored vessel called the ‘Night Heron,’ sliced through the turbulent skies. Varonis piloted with rigid focus, while Nimira monitored the Arca-Core grid, her frost-mark flaring with increasing urgency. Lyzra, already on board, had commandeered the comms, feeding them real-time updates. “Target acquired,” Lyzra’s voice crackled through the intercom, a thread of calm amidst the storm. “Jorvan’s personal supply transport, ‘The Iron Rail-Viper,’ is approaching the Cinderfall Junction, carrying four high-value personnel – the abducted specialists. And… several of Jorvan’s top lieutenants are also on board, overseeing the transfer.” “Prepare for boarding,” Varonis commanded, his eyes fixed on the massive, armored cargo train ahead, a dark behemoth against the darkening sky. “Nimira, stay behind the assault team. Lyzra, be ready with the system overrides.” “Will do, CEO Teth,” Lyzra replied, a subtle wink in her voice for Nimira. “Just waiting for the optimal moment to lock them in.” The Night Heron docked with a violent shudder against the transport’s external access hatch. Varonis's strike team breached the outer shell, plasma torches hissing, and advanced into the metallic belly of the car. Nimira, ignoring Varonis’s earlier command, was right behind them, her own compact energy pistol held ready. The confrontation was swift and brutal. Jorvan’s lieutenants, caught off guard by the aggressive boarding, were quickly subdued. The four terrified researchers were huddled in a cargo bay, their faces pale with fear. Lyzra, from the Night Heron, seamlessly executed her long-awaited maneuver. “Override initiated,” Lyzra’s voice announced, a note of triumph barely contained. “All internal bulkheads on the transport are now locked. Jorvan’s lieutenants are secured in cargo hold six. The prisoners are free.” Nimira gave a victorious grin. They had the specialists, and they had Jorvan’s inner circle trapped. Just as the escort began leading the specialists toward the Night Heron, a shimmering, distorted image coalesced in the center of the cargo bay. A holographic projection of Jorvan Dax flickered to life, his face twisted into a grotesque, gleeful sneer. His eyes, full of malice, met Nimira’s. “Too late, Nimira Zaltus,” Jorvan’s voice echoed, amplified and chillingly calm, despite the chaotic scene. “You may have your pawns, but the game is mine. The Lake Myr matrix is activated. Enjoy the fall, darling. All of Oravan will soon sing your elegy.” The entire armored railcar shuddered violently. Far below, the floating city of Oravan, once a glittering jewel in the sky, groaned. Its massive Arca-Core thrusters began to falter, their ethereal glow dimming, then sputtering. A sickening lurch propelled everyone forward. A catastrophic, undeniable freefall had begun.
