The Pager Empire

Bram didn’t waste another breath. The low growl in his chest deepened, a sound entirely foreign to the quiet factory worker. Vance, with Selah still dangling, had barely turned his head towards the open nursery window when Bram launched himself across the room. It wasn’t a practiced move, no elegant martial art. It was pure, brute force, fueled by terror and love. His calloused hand balled into a fist, knuckles like worn river stones. He focused on the jaw, a spot he’d seen men target in barroom brawls during his younger days. A guttural roar tore from his throat, a primal sound that shook the dust motes in the neon-flickering air. His right hook landed with a sickening *thwack*. Vance’s head snapped back, his eyes momentarily glazing over, the cruel smirk wiped clean from his face. The impact reverberated through Bram’s arm, but he barely registered it. His only thought was Selah. As Vance’s grip on her collar loosened, his body swaying precariously, Bram reacted with an agility Dessa had never witnessed. He lunged, his large hands forming a protective cradle, catching his baby girl just as Vance’s legs buckled. The older man crumpled to the floor with a thud, his crowbar clattering beside him, a forgotten weapon. Selah, released from the terrifying grip, blinked up at her rescuer. Her father. His face was a mask of raw emotion—fear, rage, profound relief—all swirling in his usually placid eyes. He held her tight against his chest, her small head tucked under his chin, a deep, shuddering sigh escaping him. She felt the fierce beat of his heart, a rhythmic drum against her ear, and for the first time, a sense of absolute, unshakeable safety washed over her. “Selah,” Bram whispered, his voice thick with unshed tears. “My sweet Selah.” Dessa, who had been frozen in horror, stumbled forward, her own face pale. Her gaze darted from the unconscious Vance to her husband, now cradling their child with a ferocity she hadn't known he possessed. “Bram? What… what happened?” Her voice trembled, a fragile leaf in a sudden gust. Just then, the cacophony outside escalated. A frantic siren, closer now, then another, joined by the screech of tires. Red and blue lights painted the nursery walls in an urgent, pulsing rhythm. A voice, amplified through a megaphone, boomed from the street: “FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! OPEN UP!” Bram, still clutching Selah, exchanged a bewildered glance with Dessa. Corin, who had been silently watching the entire exchange from his toy jeep, let out a triumphant gurgle, then began to furiously tap out a message on the steering wheel: *FBI. Good. Vance. Done.* The front door splintered inwards, a sudden, violent crack. Heavy boots pounded up the stairs. Agent Sterling, his face grim and unsmiling, appeared in the nursery doorway, flanked by two uniformed officers. His eyes swept across the room: overturned alphabet blocks, Corin’s plastic jeep, the unconscious Vance, the crowbar, and Bram standing protectively over his family with Selah nestled in his arms. The fed's gaze lingered on the Speak & Spell, wired into the copper telephone jack with stripped red and black leads. “Bram?” he asked, his voice low and brisk. “We received an anonymous tip regarding large, unscheduled wire transfers from offshore accounts, redirected through a… rather unusual channel. The data led us directly to this address, and to Mr. Vance’s activities.” He gestured to the prone figure on the floor. “Are you prepared to make a statement regarding a Mr. Solomon Vance and ‘Apex Link Holdings’?” Bram, utterly dazed but feeling a surge of defiant pride, simply tightened his embrace on Selah. “He tried to hurt my baby,” Bram said, his voice rough. “And he tried to frame us.” Dessa wiped wet streaks from her cheeks and nodded beside him. The next few hours were a whirlwind of official questions, flashing cameras, and the solemn efficiency of federal agents. Vance was cuffed and led away, still groggy, glaring back at Selah with bared teeth, a glare she answered with a calm, superior smirk. He wouldn’t be a problem for a very, very long time. The agent stepped back inside after Vance was shoved into a cruiser, his shoulders dropping slightly. “The data you provided, Mr. Vesper—or rather, the data *someone* provided—was incredibly detailed. It outlined Vance’s entire syndicate, his offshore accounts, shell corporations, everything. We’ve seized assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars.” He paused, then offered a small, professional smile. “Due to your cooperation, and the crucial evidence that led to this significant federal bust, the government will be awarding Stanton Connect a substantial percentage of the recovered funds. A legal bounty, as it were.” Bram and Dessa stared, dumbfounded. The concept of a ‘bounty’ for exposing a crime was utterly alien to their working-class sensibilities. “A… a bounty?” Dessa managed, her voice a thin squeak. “Enough to ensure your pager company, Stanton Connect, will be more than just a local venture,” Sterling clarified. “You’re legitimate millionaires. And your venture is now cleared of suspicion. Congratulations.” The next morning, the Rust-End neighborhood felt different. The air hummed with a new kind of energy, not just the usual industrial drone. The house, once a cramped workspace reeking of solder and cold coffee, now smelled of victory and fresh drip brew. Bram and Dessa moved through their home with a bewildered grace, their faces etched with a dawning realization of their new reality. They sat on the sofa, clutching steaming mugs of coffee, occasionally glancing at each other with wide, disbelieving eyes. Their dreams, once so small and practical, had exploded into something vast and unimaginable. Selah, nestled comfortably in her upgraded, cherry-wood playpen, watched them. Next to her, in an identical playpen, was Corin, contentedly gnawing on a teething ring. The two toddlers, these secret architects of fortune, exchanged a knowing look. Selah offered a toothless, triumphant grin. Corin returned it, his own gummy smile stretching wide. The 90s tech boom loomed, a landscape of untold potential. Pagers were just the beginning. The world, ripe for innovation, lay waiting. And from their adjacent playpens, with the Rust-End now a launching pad, Selah and Corin knew, with absolute certainty, they were ready to build it, brick by digital brick, together. Their empire had just begun.
