Chapter 2 of 3
Whispers of the Devourer
1.2k words
Ash coated Kaelen's tongue. Every breath grated in his throat, dry and acrid. Rubble stretched in every direction, a monument to swift, brutal destruction. Twisted rebar clawed at a bruised, grey sky. He pushed forward, each step a testament to an unwelcome resilience. His past life's ghost clung to him, a cold weight around his heart.
Memories of his fallen kingdom, their final desperate stand, flickered at the edge of his vision. The smell of burning wood, the screams of the innocent. It was all too familiar, a repeating nightmare in a different realm. He hated it.
This world, too, was dying. The Blight wasn't just a force of destruction; it was an erasure. A cosmic hunger that left nothing but void. He felt its oppressive presence, a subtle drain on the air, on his very being. It was like a cold hand pressing against his soul.
Movement caught his eye. A flicker of light, impossibly vibrant against the desolation. He veered towards it, his strategist's mind overriding his instinct for self-preservation. Curiosity, or perhaps a morbid fascination, pulled him onward.
Crumbling structures, once grand and ornate, now sagged like broken bones. Murals, depicting celestial beings and vibrant, living realms, were scarred by black scorch marks. The very stone wept a fine, dark dust.
He navigated a collapsed archway, the air growing heavier, colder. A low moan reached him, frail and desperate. It was human, or something close to it. His pace quickened.
There, nestled amongst the ruins of what might have been an altar, lay a figure. She was clad in tattered robes of what once had been pristine white, now stained with grime and a sickly, purplish blight. Her skin, where visible, was pale, almost translucent, crisscrossed with dark, creeping veins.
Long, silver hair, dull with dust, fanned around her face. Her eyes, however, held a startling intensity, even in her weakened state. They were the color of amethyst, now fading, clouded with pain and a terrible urgency. A faint, golden glow emanated from her chest, barely holding the encroaching shadows at bay.
She was a Semideus, no doubt. Kaelen recognized the latent divine energy, though it was rapidly diminishing. She struggled to raise a hand, her fingers trembling. “Stranger...” Her voice was a dry rasp, barely audible.
Kaelen knelt beside her, his gaze sweeping the immediate area for threats. Nothing. Only the creeping silence and the oppressive weight of the Blight. “Who are you?” he asked, his voice low, careful.
“Elara,” she whispered, a faint tremor running through her. “Priestess... of the Verdant Dawn.” A cough wracked her body, a spray of dark, viscous fluid escaping her lips. The golden light around her flickered, weakening further.
Her eyes, wide and pleading, met his. “You... you feel it, don't you? The Blight... it spreads.”
He nodded, a grim understanding settling in his chest. “I feel it.”
“It’s faster now,” she continued, her words rushing, desperate. “Stronger. It... it has a Heart. A source. Deeper than we ever imagined.” Her gaze darted to the ruins around them, a profound sorrow etched on her face. “This realm... gone. So many realms...”
Kaelen watched her, a knot tightening in his stomach. He saw the end of his own world reflected in her dying eyes. The helplessness. The crushing inevitability.
“The Heart of the Blight,” she gasped, clutching at his arm with surprising strength. Her touch was icy cold. “It’s not just consuming energy. It's... twisting it. Corrupting it. It changes everything it touches.”
A shiver ran down Kaelen's spine. This was worse than he thought. Not just destruction, but perversion. A profound violation of existence.
“No one believed me,” Elara choked out, a tear tracing a path through the dust on her cheek. “They thought I was mad. Just another ravaged Semideus. But I saw it. A vision... a terrible truth.”
Her grip tightened, her strength almost gone. “You are... different. I feel it. An echo of something ancient. Untouched by this world's folly.” Her eyes burned with a final, desperate fire. “You must... you must find it. The Heart.”
Kaelen felt a surge of unease. Responsibility. That familiar, unwelcome weight. He had failed before. He had promised protection and delivered ruin. Could he truly trust himself with such a task again?
Before he could voice his doubts, Elara pushed something into his hand. It was cold, smooth. He looked down. A shard of something crystalline, no bigger than his thumb. It pulsed with a faint, internal luminescence, a soft, ethereal light, like a captive star.
“It will guide you,” she whispered, her voice barely a breath. “It holds... a fragment of the truth. A key. Do not let it fall into the shadows.”
Her body began to tremble violently. The golden glow around her flickered, dimming rapidly. The purplish veins on her skin darkened, spreading like ink. A chill wind swept through the ruins, carrying with it a scent of decay and oblivion.
Shadows detached themselves from the crumbling walls, elongating, twisting into grasping tendrils. They coiled around Elara, consuming the last vestiges of her light. Her amethyst eyes, once full of urgency, now widened in terror. A silent scream tore through her lips, though no sound escaped.
Kaelen watched, helpless. The Blight was not slow. It was swift, merciless. It devoured her essence in moments, leaving behind only a husk of tattered cloth and dust. The air where she had been felt hollow, cold, utterly empty.
His hand instinctively closed around the shard. Its light felt warmer now, a tiny ember against the encroaching desolation. Guilt gnawed at him. He couldn’t save her. He couldn’t save his own people. Now this dying priestess had thrust this burden upon him.
The weight of it was immense. The 'Heart of the Blight'. A cosmic entity, consuming divine energy, threatening all realms. And he, an outcast, a nameless strategist from a forgotten past, was supposed to find it. The irony was bitter, sharp.
He stood, the shard clutched tight. His gaze swept the ravaged landscape, the ghost of Elara's plea echoing in his mind. He didn't want this. He wanted only to understand, to maybe, just maybe, atone for his past failures in quiet obscurity.
But obscurity was no longer an option. The Blight had found him. Or perhaps, Elara had found him for the Blight. His fingers tightened around the cryptic crystal. He felt a faint hum, a vibration that resonated deep within his bones. It was calling to him, demanding his attention.
He had no choice. The world was at stake, and a dying woman's final hope rested in his palm. He had to move. He had to act. He had to understand what this shard was, and what Elara meant by a 'key'.
The glowing shard in Kaelen's hand suddenly flares, projecting a holographic map of a celestial city Kaelen has never seen, marked with a single, pulsing red 'X'.
