Chapter 6 of 13

The Trial of Fire

1.4k words

The bells of Emberhold rang without pause. From the city's towering walls, Kael watched the Shadow Legion gather across the valley. Thousands of shadow soldiers stood motionless beneath the unnatural darkness, their black armor reflecting no light. Behind them, the Shadow Veil crept steadily forward, swallowing fields, forests, and abandoned villages. General Malrec rode to the front of the army on a massive black beast whose eyes glowed with violet fire. He raised his spear. "Starborn!" his voice thundered across the valley. "You have until sunrise. Surrender yourself, and the city will be spared." No one on the walls answered. Malrec smiled beneath his silver mask. "I expected as much." He turned his mount and disappeared into the darkness. The siege had begun. That night, the council gathered once more. Maps covered the war table, but none offered a hopeful answer. "The western gate can withstand three days," Rowan reported. "The eastern wall perhaps five." King Aldren folded his arms. "And after that?" Silence. Vaelor finally spoke. "The dragons can slow the Shadow Legion." "But not forever." Seraphine looked toward Kael. "The Shadow King isn't trying to conquer Emberhold." "He's trying to force Kael into making a desperate choice." Kael understood. "If I lose control of my powers..." "The Star Mark could become corrupted," Seraphine finished. Everyone remembered Princess Lyra's warning. The greatest danger wasn't simply losing the battle. It was allowing fear, hatred, or pride to twist the Starborn's gift. Later that evening, Seraphine asked Kael to follow her beneath the palace. Hidden below the castle was an ancient chamber illuminated by blue fire. At its center stood a circular platform surrounded by glowing runes. "What is this place?" Kael asked. "The Chamber of Trials." "It was built by the first Starborn." Kael frowned. "I already completed the dragons' trials." Seraphine nodded. "Those tested your compassion." "This one will test your heart." She stepped aside. "The Starborn's greatest battles are never fought against monsters." "They are fought within." Before Kael could ask another question, the platform erupted with golden light. The room disappeared. Kael found himself standing in his old village. The blacksmith's shop looked exactly as he remembered. The smell of hot iron drifted through the air. Children laughed in the streets. For one beautiful moment, it felt as though nothing had ever changed. A familiar voice called his name. "Kael!" He turned. Master Brenn-the blacksmith who had raised him-stood in the doorway. The old man smiled warmly. "Come inside." Kael's eyes filled with emotion. "You...you're gone." Master Brenn had died years before the prophecy began. The old blacksmith simply smiled. "For today, I'm here." Kael embraced him tightly. "I've missed you." "So I've noticed." They spent what felt like hours repairing horseshoes and forging tools just as they once had. For the first time in weeks, Kael laughed. He forgot about wars. Dragons. Prophecies. Then everything changed. Dark smoke drifted into the village. The sky turned violet. The Shadow Legion marched through the streets. Villagers screamed. Master Brenn handed Kael a sword. "Protect us." Kael charged forward. He fought desperately, but every shadow soldier he defeated was replaced by two more. Soon the village burned. Master Brenn fell to one knee. "You failed." Kael froze. "No..." "You left us." The old man's voice slowly changed. It became colder. Crueler. "You chose strangers over your own family." Kael stepped backward. "This isn't real." The village dissolved into darkness. The next vision appeared instantly. Kael now stood inside the throne room of the Star Kingdom. He wore magnificent golden armor. The Celestial Crown rested upon his head. Thousands of soldiers knelt before him. One voice echoed through the hall. "You've won." Another followed. "No more suffering." "Take complete control." The Star Mark glowed brighter than ever before. Unlimited power surged through him. He could feel it. No exhaustion. No sacrifice. No weakness. Only strength. The vision tempted him. With this power he could destroy the Shadow Legion in a single battle. Perhaps even defeat the Shadow King himself. Then he noticed something. The faces of the kneeling people looked empty. Fear filled their eyes. Not respect. Fear. A quiet voice echoed behind him. "What kind of king would you become?" Kael removed the crown. "I don't want people to obey me because they're afraid." The throne room shattered. The final trial began. Kael stood alone in endless darkness. Across from him appeared...himself. The other Kael wore black armor. His Star Mark had become completely dark. Purple flames burned within his eyes. "I am who you'll become." "No," Kael replied. "You'll grow tired." "Tired of losing." "Tired of sacrifice." The dark version smiled. "You know I'm right." "Every time you save someone, you lose part of yourself." "One day there will be nothing left." Kael remained silent. The words hurt because they were true. The Starborn's magic always demanded a price. "What if compassion isn't enough?" the dark Kael whispered. "What if mercy gets your friends killed?" The vision showed Rowan falling in battle. Then Elara. Then Seraphine. Finally King Aldren. Kael's breathing quickened. The dark Kael stepped closer. "Take the easy path." "Rule through fear." "No one will ever threaten those you love again." For several moments, Kael couldn't answer. Then he remembered something Master Brenn had once told him while teaching him to forge steel. "The hottest fires don't destroy good metal." "They reveal its true strength." Kael looked directly at his darker self. "I am afraid." "I will make mistakes." "I will lose battles." "I may even lose people I love." The dark version smiled. "Exactly." "But none of that gives me the right to become like you." Golden light burst from Kael's Star Mark. The darkness cracked. His shadow self reached toward him. "You cannot win!" "I'm not trying to win." Kael answered calmly. "I'm choosing who I become." The dark figure dissolved into countless sparks. Kael opened his eyes. He was back inside the Chamber of Trials. He collapsed onto one knee, breathing heavily. Seraphine helped him stand. "You were inside for only a few minutes." "It felt like days." She smiled gently. "It always does." The Star Mark on Kael's hand looked different. The silver lines surrounding the star now glowed with a soft golden light. "What happened?" he asked. "You passed." "The Trial of Fire isn't about mastering magic." "It's about mastering yourself." The victory was short-lived. A tremendous explosion shook the palace. The chamber doors burst open. A wounded soldier staggered inside. "The western wall..." He struggled to breathe. "It's fallen." Kael raced to the battlements. Smoke covered the city. Shadow creatures flooded through a massive breach in the wall. Dragons clashed with winged shadow beasts above the rooftops. Citizens fled through burning streets. General Malrec himself led the assault. King Aldren drew his sword. "Defend the city!" The battle erupted. Kael joined Rowan and Elara near the breach. A terrified young soldier froze as shadow warriors surrounded him. Without hesitation, Kael stepped between them. He raised his hands. Instead of forcing his magic, he focused only on protecting the frightened soldier. Golden starlight spread across the battlefield like a shield. Unlike before, the power flowed calmly. It no longer surged wildly. The Star Mark responded to purpose rather than panic. Shadow blades shattered against the radiant barrier. The young soldier escaped safely. Kael smiled despite his exhaustion. He finally understood. The Starborn's greatest strength was never destruction. It was protection. High above the battlefield, Vaelor roared triumphantly. "The Starborn has passed the Trial!" The dragons answered with thunderous cries. Even so, General Malrec simply laughed. "You've learned control." He pointed toward the northern horizon. "But you're already too late." Far beyond Emberhold, the Shadow Veil spread across another kingdom. Cities disappeared beneath its darkness. Thousands more lives were in danger. Kael realized the terrible truth. The battle for Emberhold had only been the beginning. The Shadow King was attacking everywhere at once. To save the kingdoms, Kael would need more than courage, dragons, or powerful magic. He would need to uncover the greatest secret ever hidden by the Starborn-the mystery of the Celestial Crown. Only then could he hope to stop the darkness before every light in the world was extinguished.
