Cold sweat dripped down Kael's neck as he pressed his back against the damp stone wall of the cellar. The air smelled of wet earth and ancient dust, a stark contrast to the sharp, metallic tang of his ruined forge. He could feel his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird, each thud echoing loudly in his ears.
Beside him, the princess drew a sharp, silent breath. Her silver cloak, ruined and smeared with soot from the burning town, clung to her trembling shoulders as she tried to quiet her breathing. She looked fragile in the dim light, yet there was a fierce intensity in her pale blue eyes.
Elara held her glowing palm close to her chest, trying to suppress the starlight pulsing beneath her skin. Every beat of her heart sent a faint, blue shimmer through her fingers, casting long, nervous silhouettes against the wooden beams above. It was a beacon they could not afford to let anyone see.
Heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel outside, stopping directly above their hiding spot. The wood groaned under a massive weight, dust filtering down through the floorboards to settle in Kael's hair. He held his breath, his whole body freezing in anticipation.
Kael gripped the handle of his heavy blacksmith's hammer, his knuckles turning white. His muscles, forged from years of lifting iron and stoking coals, felt stiff and unresponsive. This hammer had been a tool of creation, but tonight, it was his only weapon.
Metal scraped against stone in the yard above. It was a slow, deliberate sound that set Kael's teeth on edge, sounding like a rusted blade being dragged across a tombstone. Whoever was searching for them was not in a hurry; they knew their prey was trapped.
A low growl vibrated through the floorboards, deep enough to make the dust shake from the ceiling. It was an unnatural sound, containing no animal warmth, only a hollow, echoing hunger. It made the hair on Kael's arms stand on end.
Quietly, Kael leaned closer to the princess, his voice barely a breath against her ear. "They tracked us from the square," he whispered, his eyes locked on the wooden stairs. "We cannot stay here."
Her fingers tightened around his sleeve, her grip surprisingly strong for someone so small. "They do not want me, Kael," she whispered back, her pale eyes wide with terror. "They want what is inside you. The star chose you, and they can smell its fire."
Blue light flared briefly beneath her skin again, brighter this time, reacting to her rising panic. She gasped, clamping her other hand over the glow, but the light spilled through her fingers anyway, painting the cellar walls in cool violet hues.
Kael winced, shifting his gaze to his own right hand. Faint, golden veins pulsed under his calloused palm, mimicking the pattern of her starlight but burning with a fierce, molten heat. The energy of the falling star still throbbed in his blood, a heavy weight that felt like liquid iron flowing through his veins.
"How do we fight something like that?" Kael muttered, gesturing toward the stairs as another heavy step rattled the wood above. "I am a blacksmith, Elara. I shape metal, I do not slay monsters."
Elara shook her head, her silver hair catching the faint blue glow of her skin. "We do not fight them yet. We run, or we die before your fire even has a chance to kindle."
---
Outside, the wind howled through the skeletal remains of the village, carrying the scent of burning pine and iron. The world Kael had known since childhood was gone, reduced to ash and screaming shadows in a single night of terror.
Ash drifted from the sky like gray snow, settling over the charred ruins of Kael's forge. Only hours ago, he had been a simple apprentice, heating metal and shaping horseshoes under his master's watchful eye. Now, his master was gone, the village was in ruins, and a princess of the fallen dynasty was clinging to his arm for survival.
Suddenly, a massive crash shook the ceiling, throwing both of them to the ground.
Wood splintered above them as the heavy cellar door groaned under a sudden, immense pressure. The iron hinges shrieked in protest, bending under a force that no normal human could ever exert.
"Move!" Kael hissed, grabbing Elara's wrist and pulling her toward the back of the cellar as the first floorboards began to give way.
Dust rained down on them as the heavy oak door flew inward, shattering into kindling. A gust of freezing wind rushed into the cellar, bringing with it the smell of ozone and rotting meat.
A monstrous silhouette filled the doorway, blocking out the faint moonlight.
Towering over seven feet tall, the creature looked like a man stretched and twisted by dark magic. Its skin was the color of bruised slate, clinging tightly to its skeletal frame, and its eyes burned with a sickening, oily green flame. A long, jagged blade dragged on the stone steps behind it, leaving a trail of black frost in its wake.
"Starborn..." the creature rasped, its voice sounding like grinding stones. It sniffed the air, its head tilting at an unnatural angle as its glowing eyes locked onto Kael.
Kael didn't wait to hear more.
Lunging toward a pile of old iron barrels, Kael shoved them backward with all his strength. They tumbled down the narrow steps, crashing into the creature's legs and sending it stumbling backward into the debris.
Roaring in frustration, the monster struggled under the sudden weight of the tumbling wood and metal. Its black blade swung wildly, slicing through an iron barrel as if it were nothing but soft wax.
Elara pointed toward a small, half-buried coal chute at the back of the cellar. "There! It leads to the alley behind the forge!"
Scrambling over the loose coal, Kael kicked the rusted iron grate open. The cold night air rushed in, tasting of snow and freedom.
She didn't hesitate, sliding through the narrow opening and vanishing into the dark, smoky night.
Kael scrambled up after her, his boots slipping on the slick coal as he desperately clawed his way toward the surface.
Behind him, a cold hand clamped around his ankle.
Ice-cold agony shot up Kael's leg, freezing his muscles instantly. It felt like liquid winter pouring into his veins, threatening to stop his heart right then and there.
Roaring in pain, Kael twisted around and swung his blacksmith's hammer with both hands.
Black, foul-smelling blood sprayed across Kael's face as the heavy iron head connected with the creature's jaw. The monster let go, its head snapping back with a sickening crunch as it tumbled into the coal pile.
Gasps of cold air filled Kael's lungs as he dragged himself out of the chute, tumbling onto the frozen mud outside.
---
Running was the only option left.
Elara was already twenty yards ahead, her silver hair streaming behind her like a fallen star as she sprinted toward the edge of the village.
Kael forced his trembling legs to move, his breath ragged in the freezing air. Every step sent a jolt of pain through his frozen ankle, but the fear of what lay behind him kept him moving.
Behind them, more roars echoed from the burning village, answered by high-pitched, metallic shrieks that made Kael's stomach turn. The Shadow King's hounds were joining the hunt, and they were hungry.
"This way!" Elara called out, veering toward a steep ravine at the edge of the Whispering Woods.
Loose gravel gave way beneath Kael's boots as he followed her down the slope. They slid and scrambled through the brush, branches tearing at their clothes and scratching their faces in the dark.
Finally, they reached the bottom of the ravine, collapsing into a small cave hidden behind a frozen waterfall.
Icicles hung like jagged teeth above the entrance, reflecting the eerie glow of the burning village in the distance. The sound of their own heavy breathing was loud inside the small stone chamber.
Kael leaned against the icy stone, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. "Husk-wraiths," he muttered, remembering the name his master had whispered in old legends. "They are real."
"Husk-wraiths," Elara confirmed, her voice shaking as she hugged her knees to her chest. "The Shadow King's scouts. They are drawn to the power of the star, and they will not stop until they have consumed it."
That star which chose Kael pulsed with a strange, warm rhythm beneath his skin, defying the freezing cold of the cave. It felt like a living thing, a small ember of the sun trapped inside his mortal flesh.
Elara looked at him, her pale blue eyes filled with a mixture of pity and awe. "The star chose you because your heart is pure, Kael. It saw a protector, not a conqueror."
"It feels like it's burning me alive," Kael muttered, clenching his fist to hide the golden glow that was beginning to seep through his skin.
"That is the power awakening," she explained, reaching out to gently touch his hand. "You must learn to control it, or it will consume you from the inside out."
Warmth flooded through Kael at her touch, the icy chill in his leg fading instantly. The pain vanished, replaced by a soothing heat that flowed through his veins like warm honey.
"My family guarded the stars for generations," Elara whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "We knew the Shadow King would return. We just did not expect him to strike so quickly, or so ruthlessly."
"If he gets this power, what happens?" Kael asked, his voice barely audible over the wind.
"He will burn the world," she said simply. "He will snuff out every light, leaving nothing but an endless night of ash and bone."
---
Silence settled over the cave, broken only by the steady drip of melting ice.
Kael stared out through the icicles at the dark forest, his mind racing. He thought of his master, who had taken him in when he was just an orphan, and the village kids who used to watch him work. All of them were gone, victims of a war he hadn't even known was coming.
All of it was gone because of him and the star he carried.
Anger, hot and sharp, flared in his chest, joining the golden fire in his veins and making his skin prickle with energy.
"We can't just hide here," Kael said, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet. "They will find us eventually."
Elara looked up, her expression grim. "We must reach the Sanctuary of the First Flame. It is the only place where you can learn to wield this power safely."
"Deep in the Dragon's Spine mountains," she replied, pointing toward the jagged peaks visible through the trees. "A journey of weeks, through territory controlled by the enemy."
"Then we start moving tonight," Kael said, standing up and gripping his hammer.
Suddenly, the air inside the cave grew freezing cold.
Their breath turned to thick plumes of white mist, and the small puddles of water on the cave floor froze instantly.
A shadow fell over the entrance of the cave, blocking out the faint moonlight.
Slowly, the ice hanging from the roof began to crack and shatter, falling to the ground in glittering shards.
Kael stepped in front of Elara, raising his hammer once more as the temperature plunged.
A figure stepped through the frozen waterfall, passing through the solid ice as if it were nothing but mist.
It wasn't a husk-wraith.
This figure was slender, clad in black armor that seemed to absorb the light around it, making it look like a hole in reality. A silver mask carved into the likeness of a weeping woman covered their face, leaving only two dark slits for eyes.
"So," a soft, melodic voice echoed through the cave, sending a shiver of pure dread down Kael's spine. "The little star has found a protector."
Masked and menacing, the figure raised a hand, and a blade of pure, solidified shadow materialized in their palm. The darkness rolled off the blade like smoke, hissing as it touched the cold stone.
"Let us see if he burns as bright when I cut out his heart," the assassin whispered, lunging forward with impossible speed.
Kael barely had time to raise his hammer before the blade of shadow clashed against the iron, sending a shower of golden and black sparks into the darkness.
---
Brace yourself, Kael thought as the sheer force of the impact drove him to his knees.
Cracks spread across the stone floor beneath his weight, the cold of the shadow blade seeping through his hammer and into his arms.
Shadowy tendrils wrapped around the shaft of his hammer, freezing his fingers and dulling his grip as he struggled to keep the weapon between himself and the assassin.
Elara cried out, her hands flaring with brilliant blue starlight as she threw her arms forward.
Grunting softly, the attacker stumbled back a step as a beam of pure light slammed into their chest, but the shadow armor absorbed most of the blow.
But the shadow blade did not vanish, growing even darker as the assassin recovered their footing.
"Flickering embers," the masked figure sneered, their voice dripping with amusement. "Your kingdom is dead, princess. Your gods are dust."
With a swift kick, the figure struck Kael in the chest, sending him flying backward.
Sent flying backward by the impact, Kael crashed into the hard stone wall of the cave, his hammer slipping from his numb fingers.
"Kael!" Elara screamed, stepping between him and the advancing assassin.
She tried to unleash another blast of light, but her energy was depleted, the blue sparks dying before they could leave her hands.
With a flick of their wrist, a wave of dark energy erupted from the shadow blade, striking Elara and throwing her against the icy wall where she slumped, unconscious.
Pain throbbed through Kael's ribs, but the sight of the fallen princess made something snap inside him.
Golden veins on his arm flared violently, turning from a warm glow to a blinding, searing heat that melted the frost on his skin.
"Leave her alone," Kael growled, his voice deep and resonant, echoing with a strange, otherworldly power that shook the very foundations of the cave.
Turning toward him, the masked figure paused, their silver mask reflecting the brilliant gold light pouring from Kael's eyes.
"You are nothing but an insect carrying a god's flame," the assassin whispered, raising the blade high above Kael's chest. "I will gladly relieve you of the burden."
Kael stared up at the descending blade, his mind clear, his fear replaced by a cold, burning resolve.
In that split second, the golden fire in his chest roared to life.
He didn't grab his hammer.
Instead, Kael reached up with his bare hand and caught the blade of pure shadow.
Gasps of disbelief escaped the assassin as the dark metal began to crack under Kael's grip.
Searing heat clashed with freezing darkness, smoke billowing from Kael's palm as the gold light devoured the shadow, cracks of fire spreading up the blade.
"Impossible," the assassin whispered, trying to pull the blade free, but Kael's grip was like iron.
With a roar of defiance, Kael unleashed the energy built up inside him, a wave of golden fire exploding outward from his chest.
Violently, the blast threw the assassin backward, sending them crashing through the frozen waterfall and out into the ravine.
Pantingly, Kael stood up, his hand smoking, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped beast. He looked down at his palm, expecting to see charred flesh, but his skin was unblemished, glowing with a deep, golden light.
He looked toward the entrance of the cave, knowing they had only seconds before the assassin returned.
"We have to go," he muttered, rushing over to Elara's side and gently lifting her into his arms. She was breathing, but her skin was ice-cold, her starlight faded to a dull spark.
She was breathing, but her skin was ice-cold to the touch.
Kael carried her out of the cave, stepping through the shattered remnants of the waterfall and into the freezing night.
Quiet now, the ravine was silent, but in the distance, the howling of the Shadow King's hounds grew louder, closer, and more desperate.
They knew where he was now, and they wouldn't stop until they tore him apart.
And they wouldn't stop until they tore him apart.
Just as Kael reached the top of the ridge, a massive shadow blocked out the stars above.
He looked up, his heart stopping as a massive silhouette glided silently through the clouds.
High above the trees, a creature of legend glided silently through the night sky, its massive leathery wings blotting out the stars, its eyes burning with the very same gold fire that pulsed in Kael's veins.
Legends were true, and the dragon had returned.
Down it dove, directly toward Kael, its massive jaws opening to reveal a blinding torrent of golden fire.
