Alarms shrieked, a grating cacophony that vibrated through the very bones of the facility.
Flickering emergency lights cast grotesque shadows, turning familiar corridors into a maze of dread. Elias moved through it like a predator, his vision tunneled, every muscle coiled for the kill.
Dominic, he knew, was close.
He had seen the man's retreating figure, a coward's back vanishing around a corner. Elias followed, his boots pounding a rhythm of vengeance on the metal floor.
Turning a sharp bend, Elias found him.
Dominic stood at a control panel, fingers fumbling with a small device, his face contorted in a mix of panic and malice. He looked up, eyes wide, as Elias bore down on him.
"You're finished," Elias snarled, his voice a low growl.
Lunging forward, Elias didn't hesitate. His fist connected with Dominic's jaw, a sickening crunch echoing in the confined space. Dominic reeled, slamming against the panel, the small device flying from his hand.
A second punch landed, this one to the gut, doubling Dominic over. Spit flew from his lips, mixed with a trickle of blood.
Dominic coughed, struggling for breath, his eyes darting frantically around.
He was cornered. No escape. Elias advanced, a dark avenging angel.
Just then, a faint whirring sound caught Elias's ear. He glanced down, seeing the small device Dominic had dropped, glowing ominously.
Dominic let out a guttural laugh, blood bubbling past his teeth.
"Think you won?" he rasped, his voice full of venom.
Suddenly, a piercing scream tore through the chaos. Lyra!
Elias's head snapped up. His heart seized. He knew that sound, that desperate cry.
Her voice had come from the maintenance tunnel access point, just visible through a reinforced glass panel nearby. Lyra was there, her face a mask of terror, struggling with a heavy blast door.
She had successfully cut the power, plunging the facility into disarray, but her path back to him was proving treacherous.
Dominic, seizing the momentary distraction, kicked out with a surprising burst of strength. His foot connected with Elias’s knee, sending a jolt of pain up his leg.
Elias stumbled, momentarily off balance, but his gaze remained fixed on Lyra.
Dominic scrambled, regaining his footing, his eyes fixed on the dropped device.
"No!" Elias roared, recognizing the explosive's design just as Dominic's foot connected with it, kicking it directly towards the reinforced glass panel where Lyra struggled.
The device skittered across the floor, a tiny, deadly projectile.
Lyra saw it. Her eyes widened, reflecting the growing red glow.
She threw her body against the blast door, a desperate attempt to gain cover, but it was too slow.
A blinding flash erupted.
The sound was deafening, a visceral roar that ripped through the air, shaking the very foundations of the building. Elias felt the concussion wave slam into him, throwing him backward.
Glass shattered. Metal groaned. Debris rained down.
Dust and smoke immediately filled the air, acrid and choking. Elias pushed himself up, his ears ringing, a metallic taste in his mouth.
"LYRA!" His scream tore from his throat, raw and desperate.
He stumbled forward, fighting through the smoke, ignoring the pain in his knee, ignoring Dominic. All he could see, all he could hear, was Lyra.
Through the swirling haze, he saw a gaping hole where the reinforced glass panel had been. Twisted metal shards jutted out like broken teeth.
Dominic’s laughter, thin and manic, drifted from somewhere beyond the immediate devastation. Elias didn't spare him a glance.
Crawling, stumbling, Elias reached the edge of the blast. His eyes burned, scanning the chaotic scene for any sign of her.
Then he saw it.
A small, still figure amidst the wreckage. Her vibrant red hair, now dull with dust and debris, fanned out around her head.
Lyra. Motionless.
She lay slumped against a crumpled section of the tunnel wall, an unnatural stillness about her. Elias felt the world tilt.
His knees buckled. He collapsed, reaching out a trembling hand, whispering her name.
"Lyra..."
From the corner of his eye, a shadow detached itself from the smoke. Dominic. He was limping, but moving, disappearing into the chaotic labyrinth of the facility.
Elias didn't care.
His world had narrowed to the still form before him, the silence more terrifying than any explosion. Dominic's chilling escape was a distant hum. All that remained was Lyra, and the agonizing uncertainty of her fate. His sunshine, shattered once more.
