Chapter 40: A United Front
978 words
A guttural scream tore from Lyra’s throat, the phone clattering from her trembling hand to the polished marble floor. Maya’s panicked voice, fragmented and terrified, echoed in the sudden silence of the penthouse. Aunt Clara. Uncle Ben. Gone.
Elias, who had been studying a complex financial report, snapped his head up. His eyes, usually cool and calculating, turned to twin points of molten gold as he saw Lyra’s ashen face, her body swaying precariously.
He was across the room in two long strides, catching her just as her knees buckled. Her breath hitched, ragged and shallow. "Maya… they took them… Aunt Clara… Uncle Ben…"
Crushing dread seized her. Dominic. He had struck. Just as she’d feared, just as she’d known he would if they pushed too hard.
Elias held her close, a silent anchor in her storm. He picked up the phone, the speaker still active, and pressed it to his ear. Maya’s sobs were raw, piercing. "There was a note, Elias. He said… he said it's a warning."
His jaw tightened, a muscle twitching violently beneath his skin. "Maya, listen to me. Are you safe? Where are you?"
"I ran, Elias. I'm at a friend's house. I saw his men. They were… they were laughing."
Fury, cold and absolute, washed over Elias. Laughing. Dominic Thorne had crossed a line that no man should ever cross. This was no longer just business, no longer just revenge. This was personal.
"Stay put, Maya. Do not leave your friend's house. Do not speak to anyone but me or Lyra. I'm sending a team for you immediately. They will take you somewhere safe. Do you understand?"
Her shaky 'yes' was barely audible. Elias ended the call, his grip on the phone almost crushing the device.
His gaze swept to Lyra, her eyes wide with terror, tears streaming down her face. He smoothed her hair back, his touch firm, reassuring. "He made a mistake, Sunshine. A grave mistake."
Pulling out his personal comms device, a secure satellite phone, he barked orders. His voice, usually modulated and calm, was laced with steel. "Get me Harrison. Now. No, don't put me on hold. Get him on the line, emergency protocol."
Minutes later, Harrison’s voice, sharp and alert, filled the penthouse. "Elias? What's happening?"
"Dominic Thorne has taken Lyra's aunt and uncle. He left a note. And he tried to get Maya. He just declared war on me, Harrison. And he will regret every single second of it."
"Understood," Harrison replied, no hesitation. "What do you need?"
"Mobilize every available asset. Every. Single. One. I want eyes on every property Dominic Thorne owns, every known associate, every bank account, every shell corporation. I want a full-scale digital and physical sweep. Find them, Harrison. Find Clara and Ben Carter. And secure Maya. Now."
"On it. I'll have teams deployed within ten minutes. GPS on all vehicles, drones in the air, digital forensics sweeping his network as we speak. We'll find a trace."
Elias paced, his movements coiled and dangerous. "I want legal teams preparing injunctions, asset freezes, everything. If Dominic Thorne has a breath, I want to suffocate it. If he has a dollar, I want to seize it. I want to dismantle his entire empire brick by brick."
Lyra watched him, stunned by the raw power radiating from him. The man before her was not the calm, strategic CEO she knew. He was a force of nature, unleashed, vengeful, and terrifyingly efficient.
He continued, his voice low, menacing. "I want every known security firm in this city on alert. Any information regarding Dominic Thorne, I want it. Offer them whatever they want. Double their fees. Triple them. Just get me intel. And I want round-the-clock surveillance on Lyra's sister. Don't let her out of your sight for a second. Send a private jet to pick her up, bring her here. Now."
"Consider it done, Elias. Anything else?"
"One more thing, Harrison. I want Dominic Thorne's personal security detail identified. Their routines, their weaknesses. I want to know where he sleeps, what he eats, who he talks to. I want to know everything. This isn't just about getting Lyra's family back. This is about ending Dominic Thorne. Permanently."
Harrison's pause was brief. "Understood, Elias. I'll execute with extreme prejudice."
Ending the call, Elias turned back to Lyra. His expression softened infinitesimally, but the hard edge in his eyes remained. He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. "They will be safe, Sunshine. I promise you."
His promise wasn't a platitude. It was a vow, carved in stone. She felt the tremor of his muscles, the steady beat of his heart against her ear. This wasn't just about his resources; it was about his unwavering resolve.
Within minutes, the penthouse was a hub of activity. Security agents, grim-faced and efficient, began securing the perimeter. Technicians set up advanced monitoring equipment, a wall of screens displaying maps, data streams, and encrypted communications.
Lyra saw Elias direct them, his commands precise, his presence dominating the room. He coordinated efforts, his mind racing ahead, anticipating every move Dominic Thorne might make. He delegated, but always retained ultimate control.
Watching him operate, a new understanding bloomed in Lyra's heart. He wasn't just a powerful CEO, a man of immense wealth and influence. He was her protector. He was her partner. He was waging a war for her, for her family, and he would stop at nothing to win it.
His focus was absolute, his commitment unshakeable. She saw the depth of his devotion, the ferocity of his loyalty. In that moment, surrounded by the whirlwind of their new reality, Lyra knew she wasn't alone. She had Elias, and together, they would face anything. No matter the cost.
"Elias," she whispered, her voice still hoarse. He turned, his gaze anchoring on hers. "Thank you."
He simply held her tighter, a silent communication passing between them, a shared resolve to fight, to endure, to reclaim what was theirs.
"We'll get them back, Lyra," he murmured against her hair. "And Dominic Thorne will pay for every single tear."
Her grip tightened on his shirt, finding solace and strength in his unwavering determination. This was war, and Elias Thorne was ready to lead the charge.
His ruthlessness, once a source of intimidation, now felt like a shield. His power, once distant, was now intimately woven into their shared fight. Lyra felt a surge of strength, a quiet resolve mirroring his own. They were in this together.
They stood, a united front, against the darkness Dominic Thorne had unleashed. The battle had just begun, but Lyra knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her bones, that Elias would not rest until justice was served.
"What do we do now?" she asked, her voice clearer, steadier.
"Now," he said, his eyes burning with an unyielding fire, "we find them. And then, we end him."
This wasn't just revenge. This was a promise, etched in the very air around them.
Lyra nodded, a fierce determination replacing her fear. She would fight alongside him. Every step of the way.
His hand found hers, intertwining their fingers, a silent pact of their resolve.
She looked at him, truly looked at him, and saw not just the man she loved, but the warrior who would tear down mountains for her. He was her protector, her partner, and together, they were an unstoppable force.
