Chapter 37: The Confession of Fear

1.1k words

Lyra's touch was a feather-light anchor. It barely registered against Elias's skin, yet it stopped the volatile rush of blood in his veins. The rage, burning and absolute, still simmered beneath his composure, threatening to erupt. A tremor ran through him. He saw Dominic's sneering face, heard his twisted words. The data breach was a personal insult, a direct challenge to his authority, to their safety. His jaw clenched. Every muscle in his body screamed for retribution. He wanted to shatter something, to hunt Dominic down, to tear him apart with his bare hands. Seeing his barely contained fury, Lyra's stomach churned. His knuckles were white, pressed against the polished desk. His eyes, usually a calm sea, now blazed with a dangerous fire. Cold dread settled deep in her chest. This was not the calculated Elias she knew. This was the predator, unleashed, driven by a primal urge she recognized from her own darkest moments. She swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. He was forgetting their plan. Forgetting the risks. Forgetting *her*. “Elias,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her fingers tightened on his arm, a silent plea for him to look at her, to see her fear. He didn't move. His gaze remained fixed on the invisible threat beyond the screen, his chest rising and falling with harsh, ragged breaths. Her voice gained a fragile strength. “You’re going to get yourself killed.” That snapped him out of it. His head whipped around, his eyes locking onto hers. The raw intensity in them made her flinch, but she held her ground. “Killed?” he scoffed, a dark, humorless sound. “I’m going to end him.” “At what cost?” she challenged, her own fear finally bubbling to the surface. “Dominic wants you to react. He wants you to be reckless. He wants you to abandon everything.” He pulled his arm from her grasp, turning to face her fully. “He took something from me. Something important.” “He’ll take everything,” she insisted, her voice trembling now. “He'll take you. He’ll take me. He’ll take our chance at freedom.” She took a shaky breath. This was it. The truth, raw and ugly, had to come out. No more hiding behind brave faces or strategic plans. “I’m terrified, Elias,” she confessed, the words tearing from her like a wound. “Truly terrified. Not just of the plan failing, but of *him*.” Her gaze dropped, unable to meet his intense stare. “He hunts me. He always has. He treats me like a possession, a toy to be broken if I don't obey. He enjoys the chase, the cruelty of it.” Fear, raw and biting, etched lines around her eyes. “I see him in my nightmares. I hear his voice. I feel his presence even when he’s not there. He’s a shadow, always lurking, always threatening to consume me.” “I can’t… I can’t face him alone, Elias,” she choked out, finally looking up at him, her eyes pleading. “I need you. I need your protection. I need you to be smart, to be careful, to be *here*.” His eyes softened, the fiery rage dimming to a smolder of concern. He reached out, his thumb gently stroking her cheek, wiping away a tear she hadn't realized had fallen. A muscle in his jaw twitched. He saw the genuine terror in her eyes, the vulnerability she rarely showed. Her confession wasn't a manipulation; it was a desperate cry for help. “You think I don’t know that fear, Lyra?” he murmured, his voice rough with emotion. “You think I haven’t lived with it?” She saw the pain in his expression, a deep, abiding sorrow that mirrored her own. Never before had she seen him so unguarded, so openly pained. Every instinct in her screamed to comfort him, even as her own fear still rattled her bones. He was hurting, too. His strength wasn’t boundless. His hand moved to cup her face, his fingers tracing the curve of her jaw. “Lyra,” he murmured again, his voice barely a whisper. “Your honesty… it’s a dagger.” A long-buried ache resurfaced in him, sharp and immediate. Her raw fear, her desperate need for him, cracked open the hardened shell he’d built around his own heart. “When I lost you,” he began, his voice thick with unshed emotion, “it wasn’t just a loss. It was an amputation. A part of me died that day, Lyra.” His voice, rough and strained, continued. “I spent years living in a shadow, haunted by what-ifs, by the knowledge that I’d failed to protect you. That I’d let him take you.” “I can’t go through that again,” he confessed, his grip on her face tightening ever so slightly. “I can’t. The thought of Dominic even *touching* you… of him hurting you…” He gripped her shoulders, pulling her closer, his eyes intense. “I still see your face, bloody and broken, in my worst nightmares. I still hear the sirens. The helplessness…” He pulled her fully into his arms, crushing her against his chest. His head rested against her hair, his breath warm against her scalp. The sheer desperation in his embrace was palpable. Against his chest, Lyra could feel the frantic beat of his heart, mirroring her own. The rhythm was a comfort, a shared pulse in a world of chaos. “I need you to stay safe,” he whispered, his voice muffled by her hair. “More than anything. More than revenge. More than the plan. More than my own life.” Her words had broken through his rage. His own fear, equally profound, now eclipsed the fury. Losing her once had been agonizing. Losing her again was unthinkable. “I’m terrified of losing you, Lyra,” he admitted, the words ragged. “It’s a fear I carry every single day. It’s what drives me, what keeps me awake at night.” He felt her tremble against him. Losing her had torn a gaping hole in his existence, a wound that had never fully healed, only scarred over. And now, Dominic threatened to rip it open again. “It still hurts,” he confessed, his voice barely audible. “The thought of that pain returning… it’s the only thing that truly breaks me.” His arms tightened around her, a desperate plea, a silent promise. Her warmth, her scent, her very presence in his arms was a fragile antidote to the terror that still lived within him. He pressed his lips to her hair, holding her as if she were the last precious thing in a collapsing world. “Never again,” he vowed, his voice fierce, resolute. “Never again.”
