Chapter 38: Vows and Vulnerabilities

978 words

A raw vulnerability settled between them, heavy and suffocating in the quiet office. Elias's confession, a whisper of never stopping his search, still hung in the air, a fragile bridge built over years of silence. His hand, which had briefly touched her arm, withdrew slowly, leaving a phantom warmth on her skin. Sensing the shift, Anya pulled back slightly, her gaze searching his face. Shadows deepened the lines around his eyes, hinting at the profound exhaustion and unspoken pain beneath the surface. Elias finally met her eyes, a storm brewing in their depths. "You want to know why I never stopped?" he asked, his voice rough, barely above a murmur. She nodded, unable to speak, her throat tight. "Because I loved you," he stated, the words cutting through the stillness. "I loved you with everything I had. And you just… vanished." His jaw clenched. "One day, you were there, planning our future, talking about forever. The next, you were gone. No note. No call. Just… an empty apartment and a gaping hole in my life." Pain etched itself onto his features, a visceral ache that Anya felt deep in her own chest. She remembered the day she left, the agonizing emptiness of the apartment, the tears blurring her vision as she clutched the single photo she allowed herself to keep. "Do you know what that did to me, Anya?" he continued, his voice rising slightly, infused with years of pent-up anguish. "I searched for months. I hired PIs. I walked the streets until my feet bled, hoping to catch a glimpse of you." He scoffed, a bitter sound. "Every single birthday, every anniversary, I wondered if you were okay. If you were happy. If you ever thought of me. And every time, a part of me died a little more, believing you simply didn't care enough to say goodbye." His knuckles, white against his desk, betrayed the effort it took to maintain his composure. "You shattered me. You took my trust and ground it into dust. How could you do that? How could you walk away from everything we built, without a single word?" Anya's breath hitched. His words were daggers, each one piercing the carefully constructed walls around her heart. She could feel the stinging behind her eyes, the familiar burn of unshed tears. "Elias…" she began, her voice cracking, barely audible. He held up a hand, stopping her. "No. Don't. Don't give me some flimsy excuse. Just tell me the truth. Did you ever love me at all, or was I just… convenient?" The accusation hit her with the force of a physical blow. A sob escaped her lips, warm tears finally tracing paths down her cold cheeks. "How can you ask me that?" she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "How can you believe I wouldn't love you?" She reached across the desk, her fingers trembling as they reached for his, but he recoiled slightly, the movement sharp and deliberate. "Then tell me, Anya!" he demanded, leaning forward, his gaze intense. "Explain! Give me something, anything, that makes sense of the last eight years!" Swallowing hard, Anya wiped at her tears with the back of her hand. Her chest ached with a deep, crushing sorrow. She had to tell him. All of it. Every agonizing detail. "I left because I had no choice," she confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "I left to protect you. To protect our son." His eyes widened slightly, a flicker of confusion momentarily replacing the anger. "Alaric," she continued, the name a bitter taste on her tongue. "He found out I was pregnant. He knew you were the father. He told me if I didn't disappear, if I didn't cut all ties with you, he would make sure you both paid the price." She took a shaky breath, the memories flooding back, cold and sharp. "He threatened Leo, Elias. Our baby. He said he'd take him. He said he'd make sure you suffered, that your business would crumble, that your life would become a living hell, knowing you couldn't save either of us." "He had people everywhere. His reach was terrifying. I saw what he did to others. I knew he wasn't bluffing. He made it clear he would hurt you through me, through our child." Desperation had been her constant companion. Every day, she lived with the weight of that impossible choice. "I chose to be the villain in your story," she explained, her voice thick with tears. "I chose to let you hate me, to believe the worst, because it was the only way I knew how to keep you safe. To keep Leo safe." She recounted the threats, the chilling phone calls, the anonymous notes. She described the fear that had gnawed at her, forcing her to move from city to city, constantly looking over her shoulder. "I changed my name. I cut off my hair. I took jobs that barely paid, just to stay hidden. Every penny I earned went into keeping us afloat, keeping us invisible. I never once told anyone about you, about us, not even my closest friends, for fear it would put you in danger." Her voice broke completely. "It was a living nightmare, Elias. Every single day, I worried I hadn't done enough. That he would still find us. That I hadn't made a big enough sacrifice." She looked at him, her vision blurred by the torrent of tears. "I watched you from afar sometimes, when I thought it was safe enough. I saw your company grow. I saw your name in the news. And every time, my heart ached, knowing I couldn't be there with you, couldn't share in your triumphs." "But I also saw the danger. Alaric's influence. I knew I had made the right choice, the only choice, to protect Leo from that world, from his legacy of corruption." Reaching across the desk again, this time he didn't pull away. Her hand found his, her fingers intertwining with his cold ones. She squeezed, desperate for him to understand. "I loved you, Elias. Enough to leave you, to endure everything, just to keep our son safe from your past."
