Chapter 29: First Glimpses

Gripping the small hand, Elias felt a cold satisfaction. Anya's heartbroken cry echoed behind them, a symphony of his vengeance. He dragged Leo away, a silent trophy in his furious conquest.
Small fingers clutched his own, surprisingly firm. Leo glanced back once, his innocent gaze searching for his mother, then settled on Elias, a curious but wary expression on his face.
Cold fury still simmered in Elias’s gut. This child was a tool, a means to an end, a weapon against Anya’s deceit. He reminded himself of that with every step, every breath.
A black SUV waited at the curb. Elias opened the back door, ushering Leo inside. The child climbed in without protest, buckling himself in with practiced ease.
Inside the luxurious car, the silence felt heavy. Elias started the engine, pulling away from the curb, leaving Anya and her shattered world behind. His jaw was tight, his knuckles white on the steering wheel.
Elias drove towards his estate, a place Leo had never seen. A stark contrast to the modest apartment he shared with his mother. This was his world now, at least for a while.
Leo remained quiet, observing the passing scenery. His small face pressed against the window. Elias caught glimpses of him in the rearview mirror, trying to decipher the child's thoughts.
His own mind raced, a confusing mix of triumph and unease. He had the boy. His son. But what now? Vengeance felt less potent, less clear-cut with this small, innocent presence beside him.
A new thought pricked at him. How did he act around a child? What did he even say? His world revolved around power, business, and now, retribution. Not playgrounds and bedtime stories.
He set the car's cruise control. A deep sigh escaped him, an unfamiliar sound. This was going to be more complicated than he’d anticipated.
Leo pointed. "Look, a doggy!" His voice was soft, hesitant.
Elias grunted. "Yes, a dog." His response felt stilted, unnatural. He was out of his depth.
A fragile moment of quiet settled again. Leo pulled his hand away from the window, turning to face Elias properly. His big, brown eyes, so like Anya's, studied him.
He felt a jolt. This was Anya's son. But also his. The boy’s face held hints of his own sharp features, a fact Elias had ignored for so long.
This was the boy she had kept from him. The boy who was supposed to be a secret. The reminder reignited a flicker of his anger, pushing back the unexpected unease.
His eyes hardened. He couldn't forget his purpose. He wouldn't. This was all part of the plan.
A tremor ran through him, a strange sensation he couldn't quite place. It wasn't anger, not entirely. It was… a pulling. A nascent, unfamiliar warmth.
After arriving at the sprawling mansion, Elias led Leo inside. The grand hall echoed with their footsteps. The house, usually silent, suddenly felt vast and empty, yet strangely expectant.
Leo’s eyes widened, taking in the high ceilings and polished marble floors. "It's big," he whispered.
Elias nodded. "It is." He led him to a large living room, filled with expensive, but uncomfortable, furniture. He didn't have a child's room here. He didn't have anything for a child.
Small, unfamiliar toys had been hastily purchased and laid out on the rug. Bright plastic cars, a building block set. They looked out of place in the sophisticated room.
He watched Leo approach them cautiously. The boy picked up a red car, examining it. Elias stood by, arms crossed, feeling like an intruder in his own home.
His own childhood had been devoid of such simple joys. A succession of nannies, strict tutors, and the crushing weight of expectation. No wonder he felt so awkward now.
Elias cleared his throat. "You can play with those." He gestured vaguely. His voice was rougher than intended.
Minutes passed in silence, broken only by the soft clatter of plastic. Leo knelt on the rug, pushing the car across the carpet, making quiet vrooming sounds.
Leo looked up suddenly. "Can you play with me?" His eyes were wide, hopeful.
Elias hesitated. "I… I don't really know how." The admission felt shameful, like a weakness.
A gentle smile touched Leo's lips. "It's easy! You just push the car." He demonstrated, sending the red car careening towards Elias’s feet.
Elias bent down, picking up the toy. He felt the cold plastic in his hand, a stark contrast to the small, warm hand he’d held earlier. He pushed it back, a stiff, unpracticed motion.
Leo giggled. A pure, uninhibited sound that resonated through the quiet room. Elias felt a jolt, an almost physical impact in his chest. A genuine, small smile touched his own lips, surprising him.
Elias quickly wiped it away. He couldn't let down his guard. This was still about vengeance. He reminded himself of Anya’s betrayal, trying to rebuild the walls around his heart.
But Leo was persistent. He crawled closer, pushing a blue car towards Elias. "Now you be the big truck, and I'm the race car!" he instructed, his voice filled with newfound confidence.
Elias found himself on the floor, awkwardly pushing a toy truck. He watched Leo's face, radiant with simple joy. The boy’s innocent laughter filled the room, a sound Elias hadn’t realized was missing.
Elias felt a pull, a warmth spreading through his chest. It was unsettling. It was confusing. This was not part of his plan. This was not how vengeance was supposed to feel.
Leo paused, looking up at Elias, his head tilted. His eyes, so full of trust, met Elias’s own. He reached out a small hand, touching Elias's jaw, then his cheek. His voice was soft, filled with innocent wonder.
"Are you my daddy now?" the question hung in the air, a profound truth Elias was utterly unprepared to confront.
