Chapter 1: A Second Chance's Edge

1.7k words

Cold stone pressed against her knees, freezing her skin through the thin fabric of her nightgown. Rain lashed at the tall, arched windows of the Crown Prince's private chambers, mimicking the violent storm inside her chest. Adrian didn't even look up from the heavy oak desk. Papers lay scattered between them, the ink on the divorce decree still fresh and glistening like wet blood. "Sign it and leave," his voice carried the weight of absolute disgust. "Did you ever believe me, Adrian?" Her whisper was thin, fragile, a thread about to snap under the weight of her grief. Half a decade she had endured his silence. Palace walls had always felt like a tomb, and for five long years, she had wandered those silent, marble corridors, her footsteps echoing like a hollow heartbeat. Adrian finally raised his cold, gray eyes, his jaw tightening as he stared at her. "Belief is earned, Eileen. You forfeited my trust the moment you chose to betray this crown." "It was a lie!" Anger, hot and useless, flared in her chest, burning the back of her throat. "A fabricated rumor by those who wanted me gone, and you swallowed it whole because you wanted an excuse to hate me." Adrian stood up, his towering figure casting a long, dark shadow across the polished floorboards. "Enough," he commanded, slamming his palm onto the desk. "You have played the victim long enough. Your family is gone. Your reputation is in tatters. I have tolerated your presence out of pity, but my patience has reached its limit." Pity. That single word sliced deeper than any blade. With trembling fingers, she picked up the silver quill. Scratching her name onto the parchment felt like signing her own death warrant, yet a strange, hollow relief washed over her. It was over. Later that night, she lay in the drafty, stripped guest room, staring at the canopy ceiling. Grief pressed down on her chest like a physical weight, making every breath an agonizing struggle. Images of her ruined life flashed before her eyes. Yet, amidst the dark memories of Adrian's cruelty, a single face brought a sudden, unexpected warmth. Duke Lucien Ashford. Adrian's uncle, the legendary Black Hawk of Ravencrest, who now lay asleep in an enchanted coma, a forgotten relic of the northern wars. Before the curse took him, before the darkness claimed his mind, Lucien had been the only one to show her kindness. She remembered the quiet afternoon in the imperial gardens years ago, when the other nobles had mocked her simple dress. Lucien had stepped in, his presence commanding and silent, dispersing the crowd with a single, icy glare. He had handed her a white rose, his voice deep and gentle. "Do not let them dim your light, Lady Rosewood." That simple gesture had been her lifeline during her darkest years. Closing her eyes, she whispered to the empty room. "If only I could have chosen you." Darkness swallowed her whole, cold and absolute, as her heart gave its final, exhausted beat. --- Gasps tore from her throat as she bolted upright. Sweat clung to her collarbone, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Looking around, she didn't see the bleak, drafty guest room of the crown prince's palace. Sunlight poured through soft, lace-trimmed curtains, painting the wooden floorboards in warm gold. Familiar scent of lavender and dried roses filled the air. "My lady? Are you awake?" A youthful voice called out from the door. Eileen scrambled out of bed, her bare feet hitting the plush rug. Stumbling toward the full-length mirror in the corner, she stared at the reflection staring back. Gone were the hollow cheeks, the dull, lifeless eyes, and the silver-threaded hair of a broken woman. Smooth, porcelain skin glowed with youth. Her eyes, a vibrant, clear emerald, widened in sheer disbelief. "This can't be," she breathed, touching her fingers to her cheek. It felt warm. Real. "My lady, the carriage is being prepared," the maid, Sarah, said as she entered, holding a magnificent gown of heavy silver silk. "We must hurry, for the Emperor's summons cannot be delayed. Today is the day of the Imperial Selection." Seventeen. She was seventeen again. This was the very day her nightmare had begun in her previous life. On this day, Emperor Marcus would offer her the hand of his eldest son, Crown Prince Adrian, as a reward for her family's decades of loyalty. In her past life, she had accepted with a blushing face and a heart full of naive hope, believing she was stepping into a fairytale. Instead, she had stepped into a slaughterhouse. "My lady? Are you alright?" Sarah asked, her brow furrowing with concern. "You look as though you've seen a ghost." "I have," Eileen whispered, her voice trembling but steadying as a cold resolve settled deep within her bones. "I have seen many ghosts, Sarah." But she would not be one of them anymore. This second chance was not a mistake; it was a lifeline. She would not seek revenge. Revenge required keeping her eyes on Adrian, and she wanted nothing more than to erase him from her existence. Her eyes focused on a different destination. She would choose a different path. She would choose the one man who had shown her genuine kindness, even if he lay asleep in a bed of thorns. "Help me dress," Eileen said, her voice dropping to a calm, commanding tone that startled the young maid. "We have a choice to make." --- Heavy silver silk clung to her skin, feeling more like armor than a betrothal gown. Sarah worked quickly, pinning her obsidian hair back with pearl clasps. Every touch of the brush felt like a countdown. Eileen stared at her reflection, tracing the line of her collarbone. Last time, she had worn a soft pink gown, wanting to look delicate and sweet for Adrian. This time, she chose silver—the color of cold steel, of a shield ready for battle. "You look breathtaking, my lady," Sarah whispered, stepping back with a look of awe. "Like a queen." "A queen is just a target in a different crown," Eileen replied quietly. "I would rather be a survivor." Leaving the manor, she stepped into the crisp morning air. Carriage wheels rattled against cobblestones as she rode toward the imperial palace. Her mind raced, cataloging her memories. Duke Lucien's estate, Ravencrest, was located in the frozen north. He had been comatose for three years now, ever since a mysterious curse struck him down during the border wars. Imperial courtiers viewed him as a dead man breathing, a tragic hero best forgotten. If she married him, she would be sent to the north, away from the toxic politics of the capital. She would have the freedom to live her own life. Most importantly, she could use her knowledge of the future to find a cure for his curse. Curing him would be her first priority. She would awaken him. She would save the only man who had ever saved her. --- Heavy oak doors groaned as they swung open, revealing the grand chamber of the High Council. Whispers erupted like dry autumn leaves rustling in the wind. Eileen walked with measured, elegant steps, her silver silk gown sweeping the marble floor. Every eye in the room was fixed on her. High above, on the elevated dais, sat Emperor Marcus, his expression unreadable behind a mask of imperial dignity. Standing to his right was Adrian. Adrian looked exactly as he had in her memories—strikingly handsome, with sharp, aristocratic features and dark hair that fell perfectly across his forehead. Yet, looking at him now, she felt no flutter in her stomach, no desperate urge to please him. Only a profound, freezing indifference remained. Adrian's eyes swept over her, a faint, confident smirk playing at the corner of his lips. He believed she was already his. After all, who would reject the future emperor? Who would turn down the chance to wear the crown? "Lady Eileen Rosewood," the Emperor's voice boomed, echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Your family has served this empire with distinction and honor. As promised, and in accordance with your father's final wishes, I offer you a choice of husband from the imperial house." Silence descended upon the chamber, heavy and suffocating. Adrian stepped forward, his chest puffed out slightly, extending a gloved hand toward her. "Eileen," he murmured, his voice carrying an annoying tone of absolute certainty. "Come." Looking at his hand, she saw the invisible chains she had worn for five agonizing years. She remembered the lonely nights. Memories of the cold stares and the way he had turned his back on her when she needed him most flooded her mind. Never again. Taking a deep breath, she bypassed his outstretched hand, ignoring the sudden stiffening of his shoulders. She took three steps forward, curtsying deeply before the Emperor. "Your Imperial Majesty," she began, her voice clear and resonant, carrying to every corner of the room. "I am deeply honored by this privilege. However, I must respectfully decline the offer of betrothal to Crown Prince Adrian." A collective gasp echoed through the assembly. Adrian's hand remained frozen in mid-air, his fingers twitching. "What is the meaning of this, Lady Eileen?" the Emperor demanded, his brow furrowing in irritation. "Our Crown Prince is the obvious and fitting choice. Who else could you possibly desire?" Eileen raised her head, her green eyes shining with an unbreakable determination. She thought of the silent, forgotten duke resting in the isolated tower of Ravencrest. Images of the man who had given her a rose when the world gave her thorns flashed in her mind. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but it was no longer out of fear. It was the thrilling, terrifying sensation of freedom. Her second chance had arrived. She locked her gaze onto the Emperor, ignoring the rising heat of Adrian's furious stare. As the words 'I choose Duke Lucien Ashford' leave her lips, a hushed gasp ripples through the chamber, and Adrian's usually impassive face contorts into a mask of bewildered fury, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that promises a storm.
